Grease trap cleaning in Ivy Chimneys, done properly

A grease trap is the kitchen drain’s first line of protection. When it’s looked after, you hardly know it’s there but left too long, it causes trouble. A regular clean keeps it healthy. The work covers kitchen waste pipes, school and care home kitchens and inline grease traps, and the jobs we see most are a blocked kitchen drain caused by grease and gurgling drains in the kitchen.

In rural areas, a kitchen may drain to a private system rather than a public sewer, so keeping fat out with a working grease trap matters even more.

Each visit ends with a written report and photos, so there’s a dated record of the work. Kitchen extract cleaning to TR19® Grease is certificated through the BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite portal.

Looking after it afterwards

Once we have finished, these simple steps help:

  • Let us know if the kitchen gets busier
  • Book trap cleans at a set interval
  • Scrape plates and pans into the bin before washing up
  • Act on gurgling or smelly drains

You will get our view on how often the trap needs cleaning. It’s based on how full it was and how busy the kitchen is.

Fat that escapes the trap hardens in the pipework. Once it’s there, it needs a drainage contractor to clear, so it’s far better to keep the trap clean.

Common problems we fix in Ivy Chimneys

A busy kitchen in Ivy Chimneys, or anywhere else, fills its grease trap faster. Traps sized for lighter use can fill very quickly when trade picks up.

These are the problems we see most often:

  • Drains that gurgle and bubble
  • A kitchen drain that smells
  • A blocked kitchen drain caused by grease
  • Sinks that drain slowly

Where a church or community hall near Church of St John the Baptist, or anywhere in Ivy Chimneys, has a kitchen used by volunteers, a periodic deep clean keeps it ready for the next event.

What grease trap cleaning looks like in Ivy Chimneys

There are about 39 restaurants, cafés and works canteens in and around Ivy Chimneys, up to about a mile and a half out, according to the Food Standards Agency’s register. Fat from washing up sets hard in pipes, and kitchens like these produce plenty of it. In Ivy Chimneys, food businesses are inspected by environmental health officers from Epping Forest council. An inspection covers the structure of the kitchen as well as the food. Having the dates of the last deep clean to hand saves digging for them on the day.

A summer deep clean suits schools such as Ivy Chimneys Primary School, as the kitchen can be stripped back with no lunches to serve. If you run a kitchen in an older building near Ivy Chimneys, such as a historic house like Hill Hall (about 2.4 miles south-east), older drains make a working grease trap all the more important.

Ivy Chimneys: your questions answered

Can you get to a site in Ivy Chimneys?

Yes, we work in villages as well as towns, and Ivy Chimneys is covered. A survey first, from pictures or a visit, means we arrive with the right kit.

Can a school kitchen in Ivy Chimneys be done out of term time?

Yes, and it’s the easiest time to do it. With about 4 schools and colleges on the FSA’s register within roughly a mile and a half of Ivy Chimneys, it pays to plan holiday dates ahead. Just give us a ring on 0345 646 2711 or drop us a line with your term dates and we will plan around them.

How far ahead should we book?

Book as early as you can for planned work, particularly if your next visit is nearly due. Emergencies are different, because our line is open 24/7.

How do you protect the area?

With sheeting and covers, before anything else happens. We keep the work contained and clean down when we finish.

How much time does a grease trap clean need?

A typical clean takes an hour or two in most kitchens, depending on the size and condition of the trap, including testing. It’s booked when the sinks aren’t needed.

Which kinds of sites do you work on?

Commercial premises of every kind: from restaurants, pubs and hotels to schools, hospitals, care homes, offices, shops and food production sites. Work is timed around how each site runs.

Are you accredited?

We hold CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001, alongside BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite membership, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease. Vent Hygiene Elite is run by BESCA and independently audited.

Which records should we keep?

Each report and certificate we give you, filed in the maintenance log, along with your own cleaning log. BESA advises that certificates record the date, location and technician.

What we do, step by step

We turn up at the time agreed with you, often in the evening, overnight or at the weekend so the site keeps working. Equipment that has to be off is switched off and allowed to cool first, and floors and nearby surfaces are sheeted. On site, it takes an hour or so for an under-sink trap, longer for a larger unit. In a small place like Ivy Chimneys, the journey is planned ahead and the visit arranged around the site’s hours.

  1. We start by finding the trap and checking its inlet and outlet.
  2. The sinks feeding the trap are kept out of use while we work.
  3. We take out the layer of fat, oil and grease and any solids.
  4. Every part of the trap is scraped and cleaned, including the baffles.
  5. Once it’s refitted, water is run through to check it drains, and we take the waste with us.

Before we arrive

  • Let us know when the site is closed or quiet
  • Dig out any earlier paperwork for the system
  • Name a contact who can let us in at the agreed time

Advice

Managing agents and facilities teams in Ivy Chimneys

The Fire Safety Order 2005 puts the duty to manage fire risk on the responsible person, and that can be the employer, the owner, a landlord, a facilities manager or a managing agent. With shared responsibility, good records help everyone.

Facilities teams in offices, schools and healthcare sites book us too across Essex. Larger estates can be phased building by building to keep disruption down.

In-house cleaning or a specialist?

Staff cleaning and specialist work aren’t the same thing. A daily filter wipe and a weekly filter wash keep grease down at the front of the system, but grease that has passed the filters is out of reach. That part needs specialist access and equipment.

Some jobs should never be done in-house: opening up ductwork, cleaning fans, drop testing fire dampers and measuring grease need training, the right equipment and safe access. Leave those to us.
