Your questions about grease trap cleaning in Harlow

Which environmental health team covers Harlow?

In Harlow, it’s Harlow council that carries out food hygiene inspections. Keep the dates of your last deep clean and grease trap visit with your food safety records, ready if an officer asks.

Can you work in Harlow outside opening hours?

Yes. We work evenings, overnight and at weekends. The work in Harlow can fit around your hours. Just call 0345 646 2711, or send details by email with your opening times and we will plan around them.

What paperwork should we keep on file?

Everything that shows the system is looked after: reports, certificates, photos and your own cleaning or check logs. A single log for each site works best.

Can you give me a price for grease trap cleaning?

The price depends on the trap and the schedule. Get in touch and we’ll send you a fixed quote before any work starts.

Can you come out in an emergency?

Yes, 24/7. Our office is open from 8am to 6pm on weekdays, and the emergency line covers the rest.

Does the law say we must follow TR19?

No. TR19® itself isn’t law; it’s a BESA specification. The law is the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, which makes the responsible person assess and reduce fire risk, and cleaning to TR19® is the recognised way to show grease is under control.

What do you do with the waste?

The waste leaves with us. Nothing greasy is left on site after the visit.

Why does a grease trap need regular cleaning?

An overfull trap lets grease into the drains. There it hardens on the pipe walls until they block. Keeping the trap clean stops that happening.

How we handle grease trap cleaning in Harlow

No two traps are quite the same. Under-sink units are small and fill quickly and larger traps hold more grease before they fill. We look at the trap, how much the kitchen uses it and how quickly it fills and suggest an interval that suits. The work covers inline grease traps, pot wash sinks and under-sink grease traps, and the jobs we see most are a regular cleaning plan for the grease trap and a kitchen drain that smells.

Kitchens in a town like Harlow often book a deep clean alongside their extract clean, so the whole kitchen is done in one closure.

The sign-off is always in writing: a dated report with photos of the work, and for TR19® Grease cleans, a certificate issued through the BESCA VHE portal. Any parts we couldn’t reach are recorded on it too.

Leave it or put it right?

Pouring hot water or chemicals down a slow drain is a common quick fix. That only moves the grease further down the pipe to set somewhere harder to reach. Emptying and cleaning the trap deals with the source. Grease, dust and wear all build up with time.

The cost depends on the size of the system, the condition it’s in and how easy it is to reach. You get a fixed price before any work starts, so there are no surprises.

Grease trap cleaning in Harlow: local notes

The FSA’s food hygiene register includes about 41 pubs and bars and about 5 hotels and guest houses within 1.5 miles or so of the middle of Harlow. Any of them serving food has a kitchen that collects grease out of sight and drains that need protecting. In Harlow, food businesses are inspected by environmental health officers from Harlow council. Grease behind equipment or on a ceiling is the kind of thing an inspection can note. Photos and dates from each deep clean make a useful record.

School kitchens, at schools like Cooks Spinney Primary Academy and Nursery for example, typically have their deep cleans and grease trap work done while the canteen is closed. Hall and church kitchens, near St Andrew's Methodist Church or anywhere around Harlow, are used by many hands, and periodic deep cleans and grease trap visits keep them in order.

What we’re called out for in Harlow

For a kitchen in Harlow or anywhere else, the trap is out of sight and out of mind. Tucked away under the sink or below the floor it’s often left until there’s a problem.

These are the problems we see most often:

  • An interceptor full of grease and solids
  • Drains that gurgle and bubble
  • A small trap that fills too quickly
  • A routine grease trap service

Healthcare kitchens cook through the year, so a deep clean has to be fitted around meals; Princess Alexandra Hospital, about 1.2 miles west, is the nearest hospital to Harlow.

Questions to ask before you book

  • Proof of accreditation you can verify
  • What records you’ll receive afterwards
  • How they set the interval to the next visit
  • If the quote is a fixed price or an estimate

Our hiring checklist

What grease trap cleaning can’t fix

Grease trap cleaning cannot fix everything, and we’d rather say so up front. It doesn’t solve:

  • A leaking sink waste or trap connection
  • Grease set hard in the drain run
  • A unit that cannot cope with the kitchen’s output

Not sure which it is? You can phone us on 0345 646 2711, or send details by email and we’ll tell you honestly before booking.

Parts of the system we cover

  • Inline grease traps
  • Restaurants and takeaways
  • Pot wash sinks
  • School and care home kitchens
  • Under-sink grease traps
  • Kitchen waste pipes

Keeping the system healthy

Results last longer with the right care. Here’s what we suggest:

  • Make sure the trap can be reached easily
  • Let us know if the kitchen gets busier
  • Keep waste oil out of the drains
  • Report slow or smelly sinks early

Scrape plates into the bin before washing up. Use strainers in the sink plugholes so less solid waste gets through.

A fixed cleaning interval means the trap never gets overfull. The interval is set to suit the trap and the kitchen.

What we do, step by step

We are used to working while the site is closed. A lot of visits happen overnight or at weekends, so the site can open as normal afterwards. On site, the work takes an hour or so for an under-sink trap, longer for a larger unit. Photos taken on a phone are typically enough for us to plan a job in Harlow and give a fixed quote.

  1. We agree a time when the sinks aren’t needed.
  2. The trap is opened up and checked.
  3. We remove the grease layer and settled solids.
  4. We clean the baffles, inlet and outlet.
  5. We close it up, check it drains and suggest when it needs cleaning again.

Preparing for the visit

  • Arrange a key holder or contact on site
  • Agree a time when the area can be out of use
  • Let us know how we reach the system, including roofs, risers and plant rooms

Ask for a quote

For a fixed quote, give us a ring on 0345 646 2711 or use the quote form with the site type, your trading hours and a short description of the system. A few pictures and your last certificate or report help a lot. We normally come back within one working day.

What affects the quote in Harlow

A fixed price needs a few facts first. We look at:

  • One-off work versus a regular cycle
  • Working hours and out-of-hours timing
  • Parking and loading at the site
  • Access, including roofs, risers and ceiling voids

Working hours, access and the scale of the site all affect the cost. We take each of them into account and give you a fixed price before we start.

Helping us quote

We can often survey from pictures. The most useful are:

  • Where the site is and what kind of site it is
  • A few general shots of the system
  • Any symptoms, from odd noises to smells or leaks
  • Close-ups of filters, grilles, hatches or access panels

Photos are the quickest way to a quote: wide shots of the system, close-ups of anything that worries you and how we’d get to it. Tell us what kind of site it is and when it’s open, and many jobs can be priced from that alone.
