Grease filter exchange in Wigginton
In Wigginton, our filter exchange runs on a schedule set by how much the kitchen cooks. Busy kitchens need changes more often, lighter ones less. We agree the interval with you at the start. The work covers baffle filters, school and hospital kitchens and wall canopies, and the jobs we see most are grease left in baffles after washing and damaged filters letting grease past.
For a kitchen in or near Wigginton, the visit is planned around opening hours and the journey, and the clean covers the whole system, as it would anywhere: canopy, filters, duct, fan and discharge, with a certificate and photo report at the end.
Nothing is signed off by word of mouth: a dated report with photos of the work, and for TR19® Grease cleans, a certificate issued through the BESCA VHE portal. Any parts we couldn’t reach are recorded on it too.

How the job changes from site to site
The plenum
Clean filters reduce the grease reaching the plenum, but it still needs cleaning as part of TR19.
Mesh filters
Mesh filters use layers of metal mesh to trap grease. They clog quickly in a busy kitchen and need frequent attention.
Keeping the system healthy
Here’s the after-treatment advice, in brief:
- Make sure we can reach the canopy on exchange day
- Let us know if your cooking hours increase
- Tell us if a filter is bent or damaged
- Never leave gaps in the filter bank
Fresh filters improve airflow at the canopy from the moment they’re fitted. Keep the extract running while you cook so the filters do their job.
Damaged filters leave gaps in the defence. Sorting them now keeps grease where it can be caught.
Grease filter exchange around Wigginton
There are about 17 restaurants, cafés and works canteens and about 12 takeaways and sandwich shops across Wigginton and its immediate surroundings (about a mile and a half), according to the Food Standards Agency’s register. Swapping filters on a schedule keeps kitchens like these drawing air properly. Environmental health officers from Dacorum council inspect food businesses in Wigginton. A greasy canopy or dripping filters are the sort of thing an inspection can pick up. Keeping each certificate and photo report on file helps show the extract is looked after. Fire safety in Wigginton falls to Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Service. Grease in a kitchen extract is a recognised fire risk, and the fire authority enforces the law on managing it in most commercial premises.
If you run catering at a historic house or estate in the area (Cholesbury Manor House is about 2 miles south), event kitchens in older buildings often have awkward duct runs that need planning. Bursars and site managers at schools such as Bishop Wood Church of England Junior School tend to book extract cleaning for when the kitchen is empty.

What your team can do, and what needs us
For ventilation and air handling systems, in-house care is mostly about checks: keeping grilles clear, noting unusual noise or smells and logging filter changes. The inside of ducts and units needs a specialist.
Day-to-day cleaning is something your team can do: wiping down canopy surfaces, cleaning filters and keeping a simple log. Inside the ducts, risers and fan is specialist work, which is where we come in.
Wigginton questions
Can school kitchens in Wigginton be cleaned in the holidays?
Yes, holiday work suits schools best. Around Wigginton, the Food Standards Agency lists about 3 schools and colleges with registered kitchens within a mile and a half or so. Booking early in the term gives the best choice of holiday dates.
Do you work overnight in Wigginton?
Yes, evening, overnight and weekend work is normal for us. The site is handed back ready to open. When you call us on 0345 646 2711, or send details by email, mention when the site is quiet.
Do we lose a day’s trading?
Not normally. We work when the area is out of use, such as evenings, overnight, early mornings or weekends, so the site can carry on as normal.
What do you do with what you remove?
Waste is contained during the work and removed when we leave, from grease and debris to used cleaning water. None of it is left on site.
How long will you be on site?
That depends on the amount of work, but for a typical site it takes less than an hour in most kitchens. We’ll give you a better idea when we quote.
Do you recommend a next date?
Yes. How often depends on use and condition, and we explain the reasoning on the report.
Can we book visits on a schedule?
Yes. Plans on a 3, 6 or 12-monthly cycle are available, depending on what the system needs.
What happens to the dirty filters?
The greasy set leaves with us for cleaning, so your staff don’t have to wash them. A clean set is fitted in their place.
The process
We turn up at the time agreed with you, often in the evening, overnight or at the weekend so the site keeps working. Equipment that has to be off is switched off and allowed to cool first, and the area around the work is covered and protected. On site, it takes well under an hour for most canopies. If the van will struggle with a lane or gateway near Wigginton, let us know and we will plan around it.
- We record the number, size and type of your filters.
- We set the interval with you.
- On each visit, we remove the greasy filters.
- Clean filters go in and we check they sit snugly.
- The dirty filters leave with us and the next visit is booked.
Preparing for the visit
- Let us know when the site is closed or quiet
- Name a contact who can let us in at the agreed time
- Let us know about parking and loading
Get a fixed quote
Getting a quote doesn’t take long. Call or email with a few details and you will usually have a fixed price within one working day. Where a survey is needed, we arrange a time that suits the site.
Related advice
When it’s something else
We’d rather tell you now than book work that will not help, so these are the things it will not cover:
- Smell complaints that need odour control equipment
- Grease deep in the extract system
- A heavily greased plenum or canopy, which needs cleaning to TR19
If in doubt, ring 0345 646 2711 or send us an email and we will say what we think before booking.
What the work covers
- Baffle filters
- Mesh filters
- Restaurants and pubs
- Wall canopies
- School and hospital kitchens
- Island canopies
What happens if it’s left?
Grease dripping from the canopy is a sign the filters cannot hold any more. Drips land on surfaces and equipment below, which an EHO may well notice. If the system at a site near Wigginton fails, there may be nowhere nearby to move to.
Kitchens, offices, schools and hospitals are all priced the same way: the size of the job, access, condition and working hours. Ask for a fixed quote and we’ll go through it with you.

What we’re called out for in Wigginton
However long the kitchen cooks each day, the filters see every minute of it. Heavy daily use means fast build-up, so it needs more frequent changes.
What we’re most often called out for:
- Missing filters in the filter bank
- Filters that leave gaps in the canopy
- Blocked baffle filters
- Filters that come out of the sink still dirty
A hall kitchen that only cooks for events, whether near Church of St Bartholomew (church of England) or elsewhere in Wigginton, still needs its extract cleaned, just less often.
