Grease filter exchange for sites in St James's

Honest limits

Grease filter exchange can’t fix everything, and we’d rather say so up front. It will not put right:

  • Odours from the discharge that filters will not stop
  • A heavily greased plenum or canopy, which needs cleaning to TR19
  • An extract that was undersized from the start

If in doubt, call us on 0345 646 2711 or email us and we will say what we think.

What the work covers

  • Baffle filters
  • Mesh filters
  • Restaurants and pubs
  • School and hospital kitchens
  • Island canopies
  • Wall canopies

Grease filter exchange in St James's

Think of filter exchange as routine care for the extract. It keeps airflow up and grease down between full cleans and takes a messy task off your team. The full TR19 clean then gives the system its clean bill of health. If you’re dealing with poor airflow through the filters and grease collecting in the filter channels, we can help, from island canopies, mesh filters and school and hospital kitchens onwards.

London kitchens tend to trade late and open early, so extract cleaning in St James's is usually done overnight, after the last service. Before the clean, we agree loading, parking and roof access with whoever manages the building.

Good records are part of the job. You get a written report with photos after each visit, covering the work done, any areas we couldn’t access and a recommended next date. Keep it with your fire safety records so it’s to hand when an insurer or inspector asks.

Landlords, agents and facilities managers

Managing agents often deal with us directly. Tell us the site, the work and the access arrangements and we’ll come back with a fixed quote.

If you look after several sites, we can plan visits across the whole estate and price them together. Each site gets its own report and pictures, so records stay tidy.

Why deal with it now?

Grease-loaded filters are a fire risk in their own right. Flames from the range can be drawn up into the canopy and grease in the duct can carry a fire further. Clean filters mean less fuel in the canopy. London sites work long hours, and the longer a job is left, the bigger it gets.

What you pay depends on the size of the system, what state it’s in and access to every part of it. You get a fixed price before any work starts, so there are no surprises.

Different parts, different methods

The plenum

The plenum is the space behind the filters. It collects whatever grease the filters miss.

Baffle filters

Baffle filters use overlapping metal blades that force the air to change direction. Grease is thrown out of the airstream and collects on the baffles.

How it works

There are three stages on the day: set-up, the treatment itself and the sign-off. Getting ready means protecting surfaces and switching off what needs to be off, and the sign-off is a written report with photos. The middle part takes longest, which takes a short visit, depending on how many filters the canopies hold. Expect the work in St James's to happen after your last customer leaves, not during trading.

  1. We look at the canopies and the condition of the filters.
  2. We note any filters that are bent, damaged or missing.
  3. Greasy filters are swapped for clean ones.
  4. We check the filters are seated and the canopy is ready to use.
  5. We tell you if the plenum or canopy needs a clean.

Before we arrive

  • Tell us about site rules, permits or sign-in
  • Clear loose items from the work area
  • Make sure equipment near the work can be switched off and left to cool

How to get a quote

Getting a quote does not take long. Send a few details and pictures, and we typically reply with a fixed quote within one working day. If we need to see the system first, we book a survey around your hours.

Advice

Fixed quotes for grease filter exchange in St James's

We do not publish a price list, because sites vary so much. What we look at:

  • The condition of the system
  • Travel, parking and unloading
  • The size of the system
  • How many systems or sites are involved

The price reflects the work, not guesswork. That’s why we survey first, from photos or on site, and why the quote is fixed before work begins.

What to send for a quote

To speed up the quote, send us:

  • The postcode and the type of business
  • The times we could work without disrupting the site
  • Close-ups of filters, grilles, hatches or access panels
  • Any previous report or certificate

To help us quote: where the site is, what it is and its opening hours, a few pictures and any previous report or certificate. Once you have those, call us on 0345 646 2711 or use the quote form.

What we are called out for in St James's

Sometimes a filter is taken out and never put back. Every gap in the filter bank lets grease straight into the plenum and on into the ductwork.

Any of these means the system needs a check-up:

  • Staff short of time to wash filters
  • Grease left in baffles after washing
  • Drips falling from the filters onto equipment
  • Missing filters in the filter bank

Healthcare kitchens cannot easily close, so their extracts are cleaned overnight or between meal services; the nearest hospital to St James's is St James Workhouse, about less than half a mile north-west.

St James's questions

Who is the fire and rescue service for St James's?

St James's is in the area of London Fire Brigade. A recent cleaning certificate and a note of the next clean date show that grease in the extract is being managed.

Who inspects food businesses in St James's?

That is Westminster council, whose environmental health officers carry out food hygiene inspections in St James's. Ratings are published by the Food Standards Agency, so a clean extract and good records are worth keeping up.

How do you protect the area?

Protection goes down first: floor sheeting and covers over nearby surfaces and equipment. We tidy up and take our waste away before we leave.

Do you work in St James's?

Yes. Our technicians work in St James's, as part of our area across London and the South East.

How far ahead should we book?

For planned work, earlier is better, particularly if your next visit is nearly due. For emergencies, we take calls 24/7.

What about areas you cannot get to?

They’re marked on the report. In ductwork, new access panels are often the answer, and we can fit those.

Can you look after several sites?

Yes. One number covers all your sites across London and the South East, and visits can be set on a regular cycle.

Do you look at the system first?

Yes, every time. We diagnose before we treat: the survey tells us what the system needs and how to reach it, and the quote is based on that.

Grease filter exchange in St James's: the local picture

According to Food Standards Agency records, there are about 366 pubs, bars and clubs and about 246 hotels, B&Bs and guest houses within roughly a mile and a half of the centre of St James's. Any of them serving cooked food has an extract to keep clean, from canopy to discharge. In St James's, food businesses are inspected by environmental health officers from Westminster council. An officer looking round a kitchen will see the canopy, and grease there is hard to miss. A dated certificate in the maintenance file answers the question before it’s asked. The fire and rescue service for St James's is London Fire Brigade. In most workplaces, including commercial kitchens, it’s the fire and rescue authority that enforces the Fire Safety Order.

Bursars and site managers at schools such as Soho Parish CofE Primary School tend to book extract cleaning for when the kitchen is empty. Commuter trade near London Charing Cross station can mean long cooking hours, and long hours put a kitchen into BESA’s more frequent cleaning bands.
