Grease filter exchange in Norbury
The filters in the canopy are the first thing cooking vapour meets. They catch grease before it reaches the plenum and ductwork and they do it best when they’re clean. With grease filter exchange, clean filters replace greasy ones at regular intervals. We are often asked to deal with missing filters in the filter bank and filters that leave gaps in the canopy, across wall canopies, mesh filters and school and hospital kitchens.
In London, few kitchens can spare a day to close, so work in Norbury is normally booked for the night or the early hours. Before the clean, we agree loading, parking and roof access with whoever manages the building.
Our accreditations include CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001, and we’re fully insured. On top of that, we’re a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, trading since 2009.

The process
Protection comes first: sheeting goes over floors and surfaces close to the work. After that, the system is made safe and the work begins. The work on site takes anything from a few minutes to an hour or so, depending on the number of filters, and the area is cleaned down before we leave. In a London area like Norbury, parking, loading and building access are planned before the day of the work.
- First, we check the canopies and the filters in them.
- Any damaged or missing filters are noted.
- We exchange the dirty filters for a clean set.
- We check the filters are seated and the canopy is ready to use.
- Anything that needs attention, such as a greasy plenum, is pointed out.
Getting ready for the visit
- Plan for cooking equipment or plant to be off before we arrive
- Let us know about permits to work or site inductions
- Agree a time when the area can be out of use

FAQs for Norbury
Can school kitchens in Norbury be cleaned in the holidays?
Yes, holiday work suits schools best. With about 30 schools and colleges on the FSA’s register within roughly a mile and a half of Norbury, it pays to plan holiday dates ahead. Just call us on 0345 646 2711 or send us an email with your term dates and we’ll plan around them.
Who would carry out a food hygiene inspection at a kitchen in Norbury?
Kitchens in Norbury are inspected by Croydon council’s environmental health officers. It helps to keep the extract cleaning records with your food safety paperwork, so they’re ready if asked for.
How far ahead should we book?
Book as early as you can for planned work, particularly if your next visit is nearly due. Emergencies are different, because our line is open 24/7.
Do you offer emergency callouts?
Yes, 24/7. Office hours are Monday to Friday, 8am to 6pm, with the emergency line covering every other hour.
Do you clean filters as well as exchanging them?
Yes, that’s an option. We’ll check your filters first because bent or damaged ones may need replacing.
What happens to the waste?
Waste is contained during the work and removed when we leave, from grease and debris to used cleaning water. None of it is left on site.
Can one contract cover all our sites?
Yes. We work across South East England and London, so we can schedule a run of sites on one programme. Each site gets its own report and photos.
How long will you be on site?
It depends on the size of the system, but for a typical site it takes a few minutes per canopy, longer for a large kitchen with several canopies. We’ll give you a better idea when we quote.
Why act early in Norbury
In Norbury, as everywhere, a filter service isn’t a substitute for TR19 cleaning. They do help keep the system in better shape between cleans, and that shows when the next clean comes round. In a London building, a problem in a duct, damper or fan rarely stays in one unit.
Several systems or sites on one quote can make for a more efficient booking. Mention every system or site you need covered and we will price it together.

Staff cleaning versus specialist work
If your staff spot something between visits, like drips, unusual noise, smells or damaged filters, they should report it rather than try to fix it. We can diagnose it and quote.
Good housekeeping makes our visits easier, not unnecessary. Regular in-house cleaning slows the build-up, but hidden parts of the system still need specialist attention.
Keeping the system healthy
Simple habits between visits make a real difference. Our advice:
- Look out for drips from the canopy
- Mention it if the kitchen gets busier
- Keep the extract on whenever the range is in use
- Tell us if a filter is bent or damaged
Once the clean filters are in, the kitchen can cook right away. We take the greasy filters with us for cleaning.
If cooking has stepped up, the filter schedule should too. Adjusting the schedule now prevents a build-up in the ducts.
What affects the quote in Norbury
There’s no set price list, because no two systems are the same. The quote depends on:
- The number of sites or systems
- Any permits to work or inductions
- Travel, parking and unloading
- Whether it’s a one-off visit or part of a schedule
Every site is different, so each one gets its own fixed quote. Size, access, the condition of the system and when we can work all make a difference.
What to send for a quote
Many jobs can be priced from photos and some basics. Send what you can of the following:
- Where the site is and what kind of site it is
- A few general shots of the system
- Any previous report or certificate
- The roof, plant room or outside wall the system runs to
Photos are enough for some jobs, while others need a look on site. Big or complicated sites, and systems that are hard to see in photos, get a survey first. Either way, the quote is fixed before any work is booked.
What grease filter exchange can’t fix
We will not sell you work that does not address the problem, so here are the limits:
- A canopy that does not capture the vapour properly
- A canopy that needs a proper clean
- Grease already built up in the ductwork, which needs a full TR19 clean
If in doubt, give us a ring on 0345 646 2711 or email us and we’ll say what we think before booking.
Parts of the system we cover

When to call us in Norbury
Every fry, grill and sauté sends grease-laden vapour upwards. The filters catch much of it so they gradually clog and airflow falls away.
Look out for any of the following:
- A greasy plenum behind the filters
- Poor airflow through the filters
- Hand-washed filters that still look greasy
- A canopy running with filters missing
A hall kitchen that only cooks for events, whether near St Oswald or elsewhere in Norbury, still needs its extract cleaned, just less often.

Grease filter exchange around Norbury
The FSA’s food hygiene register shows about 179 restaurants, cafés and canteens and about 174 takeaways and sandwich shops in Norbury and the streets around it, up to about 1.5 miles out. Each canopy among them has filters that load with grease and need swapping or cleaning. In London, kitchens are typically cleaned overnight, when the kitchen is closed and loading is easier. It’s Croydon council that sends environmental health officers to food businesses in Norbury. A greasy canopy or dripping filters are the sort of thing an inspection can pick up. A TR19® certificate and photo report after each clean gives you a record to show an inspector.
Kitchens that cook twelve hours or more a day, as some healthcare kitchens do, fall into BESA’s three-monthly minimum; Croydon University Hospital is the nearest hospital to Norbury, about 1.3 miles south.
