About our grease filter exchange in Fordingbridge

Good filters only work when they fit properly. Gaps in the filter bank are a direct route into the plenum and every filter is checked when we swap them. Damaged filters are flagged so they can be replaced. We are often asked to deal with filters that leave gaps in the canopy and missing filters in the filter bank, on mesh filters, school and hospital kitchens and wall canopies.

In a smaller place like Fordingbridge, the kitchens with extract systems are more likely to be a pub, a café, a takeaway or a school or care home kitchen than a big restaurant. Quieter kitchens still collect grease in the duct, just more slowly, so the interval is set by hours of use and grease readings.

We have been trading since 2009, and we are a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease. We also hold CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001, and we carry full insurance.

What grease filter exchange cannot fix

We will always give you a straight diagnosis, so here’s what this work cannot put right:

  • An extract that was undersized from the start
  • Greasy ducts and risers that a filter change will not reach
  • Smell complaints that need odour control equipment

Not sure which it is? You can give us a ring on 0345 646 2711, or send details by email and we will tell you honestly.

Where we work

  • School and hospital kitchens
  • Island canopies
  • Mesh filters
  • Baffle filters
  • Wall canopies
  • Restaurants and pubs

Leave it or put it right?

Grease dripping from the canopy is a sign the filters cannot hold any more. Left, it ends up on equipment, food areas and staff, which an EHO may well notice. Around Fordingbridge, a kitchen or building out of action is missed straight away.

When the work has to happen, how we reach it and how big the site is can all change the price. Each of those is built into the quote, and the price is fixed before work begins.

Fordingbridge kitchens: local notes

Look up Fordingbridge on the FSA’s food hygiene register and you will find about 11 restaurants, cafés and works canteens and about 7 sandwich bars and takeaways within 1.5 miles or so of the middle of Fordingbridge. Where they cook under a canopy, the grease filters are the first line of defence and clog quickly. Fordingbridge is covered by Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service. Fire and rescue authorities enforce the Fire Safety Order in most non-domestic premises, and in a kitchen that fire risk includes the grease in the extract. Food hygiene inspections in Fordingbridge are the job of New Forest council’s environmental health team. An officer looking round a kitchen will see the canopy, and grease there is hard to miss. Keeping each certificate and photo report on file helps show the extract is looked after.

Older buildings often hide long, awkward duct runs, and if you run a kitchen at a historic venue in the area (Breamore House is about 2.8 miles north), access may need planning. Church and community hall kitchens, near St Mary's Church or anywhere around Fordingbridge, are easy to forget, but their extracts collect grease like any other.

Whether it’s one building or many, the standard is the same: diagnosis, a fixed price, work booked around your hours and a written report with photos.

Running several sites is easier with one contractor. We cover South East England and London, so visits at different addresses can be planned together and kept on a regular cycle.

The process

Your trading hours come first. Most visits are booked for when the area is out of use, such as evenings, overnight, early mornings or weekends. Once we’re in, the area is sheeted and anything that has to be off is turned off and cooled, and the job takes a short visit, depending on how many filters the canopies hold. For a site near Fordingbridge, the work is booked around your opening hours, evenings and weekends included.

  1. We start by noting how many filters you have and what type they are.
  2. We agree a schedule that suits how much the kitchen cooks.
  3. At each visit, the greasy filters are lifted out.
  4. Clean, dry filters are fitted in their place, with no gaps left between them.
  5. Anything we notice, such as bent filters or a dirty plenum, is pointed out.

Preparing for the visit

  • Find the previous report, if there is one
  • Let us know when the site is closed or quiet
  • Move anything stored near the system

Advice

Keeping the system healthy

So the system stays in good health:

  • Keep filter exchange and TR19 cleaning on the same plan
  • Keep the canopy clear for exchange visits
  • Wipe the outside of the canopy as part of daily cleaning
  • Never leave gaps in the filter bank

The canopy looks cleaner and the air moves better straight away. Always run the extract during cooking so the filters do their job.

If cooking has stepped up, the filter schedule should too. Adjusting the schedule now prevents a build-up in the ducts.

Common questions in Fordingbridge

Can you get to a site in Fordingbridge?

Yes, Fordingbridge is part of our area, however small the site. Just mention lanes, gates or anything else about the site when you book.

Can you clean school kitchen extracts in Fordingbridge during the holidays?

Yes. Half-terms and the summer break are the natural time for school work. The FSA’s register shows about 3 schools and colleges with food registrations within roughly a mile and a half of Fordingbridge. Booking early in the term gives the best choice of holiday dates.

Are you insured?

Yes, we are fully insured. We also hold CHAS and SafeContractor, for sites that check contractor safety.

What does grease filter exchange cost?

Filters, canopies and how often you need visits all affect the price. Tell us what you have and we’ll come back with a fixed quote, usually within one working day.

Is there a cleaning option for the filters we have?

Yes. Cleaning your existing filters is an option while others want an exchange. Either way, the canopy is not left without filters during service.

Do you recommend a next date?

Yes. The interval depends on how much the system is used and what we find, and we explain the reasoning on the report.

What does TR19 mean?

TR19® is the BESA specification for keeping ventilation systems clean. Since 2019, TR19® Grease has been a standalone specification for grease in kitchen extract systems, while TR19® Air covers other supply and extract ductwork.

Will we have to stop cooking for a filter change?

A change takes anything from a few minutes to an hour or so, depending on the number of filters, so disruption is small. We plan visits outside your busiest times wherever we can.

What we are called out for in Fordingbridge

Filters get bent and damaged with handling. Damaged filters don’t sit flush, leaving gaps for grease to slip through.

If you notice any of these, it’s worth a diagnosis:

  • Bent or damaged filters that don’t sit properly
  • Filters that come out of the sink still dirty
  • Gaps where filters have been removed
  • Drips falling from the filters onto equipment

If you look after a school kitchen, at a school such as Fordingbridge Junior School or anywhere near Fordingbridge, the holidays are the usual time for a TR19® clean.

Before booking anyone

  • How areas they can’t reach will be recorded
  • Whether they recommend a next date
  • Which accreditations they hold, and whether you can check them
  • What hours they’ll be on site

Our hiring checklist

What the work involves, part by part

Busy restaurant and pub kitchens

Kitchens that fry and grill all day load their filters fast. Their exchange schedule is usually the tightest.

School, care home and staff kitchens

Even kitchens with fixed meal times build up grease though usually at a gentler pace.
