About our grease filter exchange in Breach Barns

A filter service works alongside TR19® cleaning, not instead of it. Clean filters reduce the grease reaching the ducts, but some grease still passes through as vapour. That is why the whole system still needs cleaning to TR19 at the right interval. We’re often asked to deal with hand-washed filters that still look greasy and grease filters clogged with grease, across island canopies, restaurants and pubs and baffle filters.

In a small place like Breach Barns, kitchens are often in older or extended buildings, with long single-storey duct runs, where grease settles in the flat sections. Access, parking and timings are agreed before the day.

We have been trading since 2009, and we are a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease. We also hold CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001, and we carry full insurance.

What a clean will not put right

An honest diagnosis matters more to us than a booking, so here’s what this work cannot put right:

  • An extract that was undersized from the start
  • Grease already built up in the ductwork, which needs a full TR19 clean
  • Cooking smells reaching neighbours, which need odour control

If in doubt, phone us on 0345 646 2711, or email photos and we’ll say what we think before booking.

What the work covers

  • Baffle filters
  • Mesh filters
  • Island canopies
  • Restaurants and pubs
  • School and hospital kitchens

Questions from Breach Barns

Which fire authority looks after Breach Barns?

That is Essex County Fire and Rescue Service. TR19® isn’t law, but it’s the benchmark many fire officers and insurers look to when they ask how often the extract is cleaned.

Do you work in villages like Breach Barns?

Yes. Villages and rural sites across the South East are part of our work, Breach Barns included. A survey first, from photos or a visit, means we arrive with the right kit.

Are you insured?

Yes, we’re fully insured. We also hold CHAS and SafeContractor, for sites that check contractor safety.

Which grease filters does the service cover?

The common types of grease filter: baffle and mesh. Tell us what you have when you call 0345 646 2711 or use the quote form and we’ll confirm it on site.

What if some of our filters are damaged?

A badly damaged filter should be replaced. We’ll tell you which ones and why on the visit.

Do you look at the system first?

Yes. For many sites, pictures and a few details are enough, and larger or hidden systems get a visit.

Do you clean filters as well as exchanging them?

Yes, filter cleaning is available. We will check your filters first because bent or damaged ones may need replacing.

Will you tell us when the next visit is due?

Yes. How often depends on use and condition, and we explain the reasoning on the report.

The process

Protection comes first: sheeting goes over floors and surfaces close to the work. After that, the system is made safe and the work begins. It takes well under an hour for most canopies, and we clear up before we go. If the van will struggle with a lane or gateway near Breach Barns, let us know and we will plan around it.

  1. We start by noting how many filters you have and what type they are.
  2. Together we set how often the filters should be changed.
  3. Each visit starts with the used filters being removed.
  4. We fit clean filters and check they sit snugly in the housing.
  5. Anything we notice, such as bent filters or a dirty plenum, is pointed out.

Before we arrive

  • Plan for cooking equipment or plant to be off before we arrive
  • Mention any sign-in, permit or induction we need
  • Let us know how we reach the system, including roofs, risers and plant rooms

What the work involves, part by part

Canopy filter housings

We check that filters sit snugly in the housing at each visit, because gaps let grease through.

Busy restaurant and pub kitchens

High-output kitchens clog filters quickly. They often need the shortest exchange interval.

Keeping the system healthy

Good habits slow the build-up between visits. Our tips:

  • Tell us if the menu or opening hours change
  • Look out for drips from the canopy
  • Keep every filter in place during service
  • Tell us if a filter is bent or damaged

The canopy looks cleaner and the air moves better right away. Keep the extract running while you cook so they catch grease as intended.

If filters are already dripping, they’re overdue. A clean set right away cuts the grease in the canopy, and it’s worth checking the plenum too.

In-house cleaning or a specialist?

In-house cleaning and specialist cleaning do different jobs. Wiping filters daily and washing them weekly keeps the visible parts in order, but grease that has passed the filters is out of reach. That part needs specialist access and equipment.

Day-to-day cleaning is something your team can do: wiping canopies, washing grease filters and recording it in a log. Inside the ducts, risers and fan is specialist work, which is where we come in.

Landlords, agents and facilities managers

Under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, the responsible person must assess and reduce fire risk, which may be the employer, owner, landlord, FM or managing agent. Where responsibility is shared, records matter even more.

Records are where multi-site compliance often slips. Each visit produces a dated report with pictures, ready to show insurers, fire officers or EHOs.

Why deal with it now?

Changing filters on schedule costs far less disruption than a blocked extract. Few maintenance jobs are as easy, and one of the easiest to let slip. Systems in rural buildings are often out of sight and out of mind.

Leaving it longer rarely makes the work cheaper. Build-up, wear and faults tend to get worse, not better, which can make the next visit longer. If you’re unsure, phone us on 0345 646 2711, or send details by email and we will give you an honest view and a fixed quote.
