Fire damper testing in Wrabness
We’re often asked to take on annual damper testing by the people who look after buildings in and around Wrabness. Send us the damper schedule or the drawings if you have them, and we’ll plan the visit around the building’s hours. If you’re dealing with dust or grease build-up on damper blades and fire dampers nobody can get to, we can help, from hospitals and care homes, wall and floor dampers and motorised smoke dampers onwards.
For a building in or near Wrabness, the visit is planned ahead, with access agreed in advance, and the test itself is the same as in any city building.
Accreditations are easy to claim and worth checking. Ours are BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite membership, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, plus CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001, and we are fully insured.

How the job changes from site to site
Schools, hospitals and care homes
Hospitals and care homes stay occupied around the clock. The sequence of testing is agreed with staff so care is not interrupted.
Offices and retail
In shared buildings, some dampers sit inside tenants’ space. We agree access with the managing agent before the visit.
When it’s something else
We’d rather tell you now than book work that will not help, so these are the things it will not cover:
- Deciding where dampers should be fitted
- Dampers that were never installed where they’re needed
- Holes around ductwork in fire-resisting walls
If in doubt, phone us on 0345 646 2711 or email us and we’ll say what we think before booking.
What the work covers
- Offices and schools
- Fusible link fire dampers
- Wall and floor dampers
- Riser dampers
- Hospitals and care homes
- Motorised smoke dampers
Between visits
Good habits slow the build-up between visits. Our tips:
- Don’t let hatches get painted shut or boarded over
- Fix water leaks in plant rooms and risers promptly
- Close off damper faults promptly
- Keep damper test reports with the fire safety log
The next test should be no more than a year away. BESA guidance is at least annual testing, so it helps to book it before the date slips.
Where a damper sits in ductwork that collects dust or grease, keeping that ductwork clean helps. It makes sense to plan duct cleaning and damper testing together.
What happens on the day
When we arrive, we check the system against the survey or the pictures you sent. If anything is different, we talk it through with the person on site before carrying on. From there, it takes a couple of hours for a few dampers, and a day or more across a big site. Somewhere as small as Wrabness, the date and timings are agreed with you well before the day.
- We plan access and timing with you first, including any out-of-hours work.
- Ceiling tiles and hatches are opened and each damper’s access panel removed.
- The blade is released and watched to make sure it closes fully.
- We reset it and record any dirt, corrosion or damage.
- We close everything up and send the results in a report.
Preparing for the visit
- Make sure someone can let us in and lock up afterwards
- Move anything stored near the system
- Allow time for equipment near the work to be turned off and cool down
How to get a quote
Quotes are quick. Call or email with a few details and you will usually have a fixed price within one working day. Where a survey is needed, we arrange a time that suits the site.

What else we do in Wrabness
For landlords and multi-site operators
When the building owner and the occupier are different, the lease normally sets out who maintains what. We can quote either party, and the report can go to both.
Facilities teams in offices, schools and healthcare sites book us too in Wrabness and across Essex. Work can be phased by floor, building or site to keep disruption down.
Common problems we fix in Wrabness
Links and springs age like any other part. Damaged or painted links and weak springs mean the blade may stop short, which only shows up when the damper is dropped.
Keep an eye out for any of the following:
- Blades that jam part-way when released
- Fire dampers nobody can get to
- Rusted damper blades and springs
- Fire dampers with no recent test record
In Wrabness, each damper is dropped to prove it closes fully, then reset.
Comparing quotes
- Whether the quote shows VAT
- What happens if part of the system can’t be accessed
- Whether the work can be done while the site is closed

Wrabness buildings and fire safety
Sea air reaches Wrabness, which sits within about 1 mile of the coast. Corrosion is a known cause of damper failure, and coastal air adds to the risk near intakes and louvres. The fire and rescue service for Wrabness is Essex County Fire and Rescue Service. In most workplaces and other non-domestic buildings, it’s the fire and rescue authority that enforces the Fire Safety Order.
Wherever there are offices above shops, near Wrabness station or elsewhere in Wrabness, ductwork may cross fire-resisting floors, and any dampers need testing.

What your team can do, and what needs us
A few tasks are always specialist work: opening up ductwork, cleaning fans, drop testing fire dampers and measuring grease call for the right kit, training and safe access. That’s our job.
For ventilation and air handling systems, in-house care is mostly about checks: clear grilles, a log of filter changes and reporting anything odd. Cleaning inside ducts and units is specialist work.
Common questions in Wrabness
Who enforces fire safety at workplaces in Wrabness?
Wrabness is in the area of Essex County Fire and Rescue Service. A report listing every damper, its location and its result is the easiest way to show the dampers are maintained.
Does the sea air around Wrabness make a difference to fire damper testing?
Yes, to a degree: at about 1 mile from the coast, Wrabness gets salt-laden air that corrodes metal faster. Corrosion is one of the things that can stop a damper closing, so it’s noted at every test.
Can you test motorised smoke dampers?
Yes. Every smoke damper is driven through its controls and checked for full movement. Where a controls contractor needs to be involved, we arrange it with you.
Where does the waste go?
Anything we remove is contained as we work and taken away with us, from grease and debris to used cleaning water. None of it is left on site.
How far ahead should we book?
That depends on the slot you want and the size of the job. Tell us your preferred dates when you ask for a quote, and if it’s an emergency, call us any time.
What’s TR19?
It’s BESA’s specification and the benchmark insurers, fire officers and EHOs look to. It sets out inspection, cleaning and record keeping and expects a risk-based approach.
Can we book visits on a schedule?
Yes. Plans on a 3, 6 or 12-monthly cycle are available, depending on what the system needs.
How long does fire damper testing take?
Expect it to take a few hours for a single floor, with bigger buildings phased over more than one visit. Access is the biggest factor, so we will confirm the time when we quote.
