Fire damper testing across Titchfield Park

Fire damper testing for kitchens and businesses in Titchfield Park

Each damper we test gets a location, a result and a note of its condition. Passes are reset and left ready to work, while failures are flagged with what we found. You end up with a clear record to keep with your fire safety documents. Typical jobs include buildings with no damper register and dampers flagged on a fire risk assessment, on riser dampers, fusible link fire dampers and motorised smoke dampers.

In rural areas, conversions, country hotels and care homes can have ductwork crossing fire-resisting walls, where the dampers are easy to overlook. A first test typically starts with finding them all.

The report is your system’s health record: a dated account with photos of everything we did. Grease extract cleans are also certificated to TR19® Grease through the BESCA VHE portal and sits alongside the report.

Staff cleaning versus specialist work

Some jobs should never be done in-house: opening up ductwork, cleaning fans, drop testing fire dampers and measuring grease need training, the right equipment and safe access. That’s our job.

Staff cleaning and specialist work aren’t the same thing. A daily filter wipe and a weekly filter wash keep grease down at the front of the system, but they don’t reach the grease that builds up further in. That part needs specialist access and equipment.

Part by part

Ceiling voids and risers

Ceiling voids are where lots of dampers end up. We lift tiles where needed and put them back as we found them.

Access panels

Over time, hatches and panels get covered up. Letting us know where they are speeds the visit up.

Managing agents and facilities teams in Titchfield Park

Facilities teams in offices, schools and healthcare sites book us too across Hampshire. Larger estates can be phased building by building around the people who use them.

We work for landlords, managing agents and facilities managers as well as the people running the site. Shared systems, like a riser serving several units, need a clear agreement on who books the work, and we can quote for the whole system.

What we are called out for in Titchfield Park

Other trades work around dampers all the time. Cables get run through them, links get knocked and blades get wedged open, and any of those can stop a damper closing.

Clients normally contact us after spotting one of these:

  • Dirty dampers that may not close
  • Fire dampers with no recent test record
  • Missing or out-of-date damper records
  • Damper actions from a fire risk assessment

School buildings such as St Anthony's Catholic Primary School are normally tested in the holidays, wherever they have dampers.

Honest limits

Before you book, it helps to know what’s not included:

  • Fire risk assessments, which need a fire risk assessor
  • Missing dampers that a designer needs to specify
  • Holes around ductwork in fire-resisting walls

If you are not sure, just phone us on 0345 646 2711 or drop us a line and we will give you a straight answer.

Where we work

  • Motorised smoke dampers
  • Offices and schools
  • Fusible link fire dampers
  • Hospitals and care homes
  • Wall and floor dampers
  • Riser dampers

The process

We turn up at the time agreed with you, often in the evening, overnight or at the weekend so the site keeps working. Equipment that has to be off is switched off and allowed to cool before we start, and the area around the work is covered and protected. On site, it takes a few hours for a single floor, with bigger buildings phased over more than one visit. Pictures of the system and its access let us plan the work in Titchfield Park before we set off.

  1. Before the visit, we agree access, timings and any areas with restrictions.
  2. We open up ceilings and hatches and take off each access panel.
  3. The blade is released and watched to make sure it closes fully.
  4. We reset it and record any dirt, corrosion or damage.
  5. Panels and tiles go back, and the results are written up.

Preparing for the visit

  • Have your last certificate or report to hand
  • Tell us about access, such as roof hatches, plant rooms, ceilings or locked areas
  • Name a contact who can let us in at the agreed time

What happens if it’s left?

Putting testing off does not change whether the dampers will close; it just means you don’t know. The guidance from BESA is at least once a year, and a skipped year leaves a hole in your records as well. In a place like Titchfield Park, ductwork and fans are easy to forget until something goes wrong.

A single site or a whole portfolio, we price it on the same basis: what needs doing, how we get to it and when. The price is fixed before we start.

Titchfield Park: your questions answered

Does coastal air change anything about fire damper testing in Titchfield Park?

Yes, to a degree: at about 3 miles from the coast, Titchfield Park gets salt-laden air that corrodes metal faster. Corrosion is one of the things that can stop a damper closing, so it’s noted at every test.

Who enforces fire safety at workplaces in Titchfield Park?

That’s Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service. Failed dampers on a report should be followed by a record of the repair, so the file shows the problem was closed out.

What should I send you?

Just the basics: where it is, what kind of site, when it’s open and the access. Photos and any previous paperwork make it quicker. After that, simply call us on 0345 646 2711, or send details by email.

What do you do to protect the area?

Protection goes down first: sheeting over floors, worktops and anything close to the work. The area is left tidy, with our waste taken away.

What paperwork do we get after testing?

What you receive is a written report of each test for every damper on the visit. Any failures come with a note of the remedials needed.

Can we book visits on a schedule?

Yes. Send details of the systems and how they’re used, and we will suggest a schedule and quote for it.

How much notice should we give?

For planned work, earlier is better, particularly if your next visit is nearly due. For emergencies, we take calls 24/7.

Which accreditations do you hold?

Duct Doctor is a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease. CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001 are in place too, and we carry full insurance.

Titchfield Park buildings and fire safety

Titchfield Park is within about 3 miles of the coast. Dampers close to louvres and air intakes can corrode in sea air, and a corroded blade may not drop. Food Standards Agency records list about 8 schools, colleges and universities and about 25 care, childcare and hospital premises registered as food businesses in and around Titchfield Park, up to about a mile and a half out. Larger buildings like these are often divided into fire compartments, with dampers where ducts pass between them. The fire and rescue service for Titchfield Park is Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service. When a fire safety officer audits a non-domestic building, maintenance of systems like dampers can come up.

Fareham Community Hospital, about 1.5 miles west of Titchfield Park, is the kind of building where dampers protect every compartment; smaller care sites need the same annual tests.
