About our fire damper testing in Stroude

BESA guidance is that fire dampers should be tested by a competent person when they’re installed and at least annually after that. For spring-operated types, annual testing is the minimum. Our job is to do the testing and hand you the paperwork that shows it. We are often asked to deal with fire dampers that haven’t been tested for over a year and buildings with no damper register, across hospitals and care homes, wall and floor dampers and motorised smoke dampers.

For a building in or near Stroude, the visit is planned ahead, with access agreed in advance, and every damper is drop tested, reset and recorded, the same as anywhere.

The report is your system’s health record: dated, with pictures, and showing what was done. For TR19® Grease cleans, the certificate comes through the BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite portal, ready for your insurer.

How the job changes from site to site

Offices and retail

Offices and shops often have dampers above ceilings that are rarely opened. We can test in the evening, overnight or at weekends so the space stays open.

Ceiling voids and risers

Where ductwork runs up through a building, there are often dampers at every floor. We work through them floor by floor so each one is accounted for.

Why act early in Stroude

Fire risk assessors and insurers may ask to see damper test records. Having a current report ready for a building in Stroude saves a scramble when the question comes. Out of sight is the usual reason a rural system goes too long without attention.

When the work has to happen, how we reach it and how big the site is all affect the cost. Each of those is built into the quote and give you a fixed price before any work starts.

Aftercare tips

Think of this as the after-treatment advice, short and simple:

  • Do not let anything obstruct a damper’s blade
  • Make sure access panels stay clear and usable
  • Tell contractors where dampers are before they start work
  • Fix water leaks in plant rooms and risers promptly

The next test should be no more than a year away. BESA guidance is at least annual testing, and booking the same month each year keeps it simple.

A simple register of every damper helps a great deal: where each damper is, what kind it is and when it was last tested. It stops dampers getting lost as the building changes.

Stroude: your questions answered

Can a school’s dampers in Stroude be tested out of term time?

Yes. The holidays are the usual time for school work. There are about 15 schools, colleges and universities on the FSA’s food hygiene register within about 1.5 miles of Stroude. Booking early in the term gives the best choice of holiday dates.

Do you work at weekends in Stroude?

Yes, out-of-hours work is a big part of what we do. It means the site in Stroude keeps running as normal. Just ring 0345 646 2711 or use the quote form with your opening times and we’ll plan around them.

What happens if a damper fails its test?

We note the failure and what we found. A repair or a replacement can follow as a remedial job with a fresh test at the end.

What do you need from me for a quote?

Just the basics: the address, the site type, your opening hours and how we reach the system. Photos and the last report help too. Then phone us on 0345 646 2711 or drop us a line.

How often do fire dampers need drop testing?

BESA guidance calls for testing by a competent person at least once a year. Dampers should also be tested when they’re first installed.

Who is responsible for fire damper testing?

The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 puts it on the responsible person. Annual testing by a competent person, with written records, is a practical way to show the duty is being met.

How do you keep the site clean during the work?

We start with protection: sheeting over floors, worktops and anything close to the work. The area is left tidy, with our waste taken away.

What about areas you can’t get to?

They’re marked on the report. Often the fix is extra access, such as new panels in ductwork, which we can install.

What fire damper testing can’t fix

An honest diagnosis matters more to us than a booking, so here’s what fire damper testing won’t do:

  • Fire-stopping gaps around the duct where it passes through the wall
  • Control wiring problems outside the damper itself
  • Sign-off of the whole building’s fire safety

If in doubt, give us a ring on 0345 646 2711 or send us an email and we’ll say what we think.

Where we work

  • Wall and floor dampers
  • Offices and schools
  • Motorised smoke dampers
  • Riser dampers
  • Fusible link fire dampers
  • Hospitals and care homes

Staff cleaning versus specialist work

Away from the kitchen, the in-house job is mainly checking: keeping grilles clear, noting unusual noise or smells and logging filter changes. The inside of ducts and units needs a specialist.

Some jobs should never be done in-house: opening up ductwork, cleaning fans, drop testing fire dampers and measuring grease need training, the right equipment and safe access. Leave those to us.

  • Detail shots of panels, filters and grilles
  • The site address and the type of premises
  • Your opening hours and when the area is out of use
  • Photos showing the whole system and its surroundings

Getting a quote does not take long. Call or email with a few details and you will usually have a fixed price within one working day. Where a survey is needed, we arrange a time that suits the site.

What we do, step by step

Our technicians bring everything the work needs, from protective sheeting to tools and access equipment. All we need from you is clear access and the right equipment switched off. The visit takes anything from a couple of hours for a handful of dampers to a full day for a large building. A quick note on how to find the site and where to park makes a visit to Stroude run smoothly.

  1. We plan access and timing with you first, including any out-of-hours work.
  2. We open up ceilings and hatches and take off each access panel.
  3. The blade is released and watched to make sure it closes fully.
  4. We reset it and record any dirt, corrosion or damage.
  5. We close everything up and send the results in a report.

Preparing for the visit

  • Name a contact who can let us in at the agreed time
