Fire and smoke damper testing in Stonor
Fire damper testing for commercial sites in Stonor and across Oxfordshire. BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease.

- Fire damper items raised by an assessor
- Fire dampers with no recent test record
What we do, step by step
The visit has three parts: getting the area ready, doing the work and signing it off. Set-up means sheeting and making equipment safe, and the sign-off is a written report with pictures. The middle part takes longest, and that takes anything from a couple of hours for a handful of dampers to a full day for a large building. The timing of a visit to Stonor is set by you, and the travel is our side of the planning.
- First we check the schedule and the last set of results.
- We locate every damper and note any we cannot reach.
- Fire dampers are drop tested, and smoke dampers are tested through their controls.
- Dampers that pass are reset, and failures are logged with what we found.
- We report the results and offer remedials on failed dampers.
How to prepare
- Let us know when the site is closed or quiet
- Make sure equipment near the work can be switched off and left to cool
- Let us know about permits to work or site inductions

Advice
How we handle fire damper testing in Stonor
Not every damper relies on heat. A smoke damper is driven by a motor and responds to signals from its controls, so we test them by operating them through those controls and checking that each blade moves fully and returns. If you are dealing with dust or grease build-up on damper blades and dampers hidden with no access panel or hatch, we can put it right, from hospitals and care homes, wall and floor dampers and motorised smoke dampers onwards.
In rural areas, conversions, country hotels and care homes can have ductwork crossing fire-resisting walls, and the dampers in them are easily forgotten. A first test typically starts with finding them all.
Our accreditations include CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001, and we’re fully insured. On top of that, we are a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, and we’ve been trading since 2009.

Staff cleaning versus specialist work
Staff cleaning and specialist work are not the same thing. A daily filter wipe and a weekly filter wash keep grease down at the front of the system, but grease that has passed the filters is out of reach. Reaching it takes a specialist with the right equipment.
Away from the kitchen, the in-house job is mainly checking: clear grilles, a log of filter changes and reporting anything odd. The inside of ducts and units needs a specialist.
Honest limits
We will always give you a straight diagnosis, so here’s what fire damper testing won’t do:
- Designing the building’s fire compartments
- Gaps in the wall or floor around the damper
- Missing dampers that a designer needs to specify
If in doubt, ring 0345 646 2711, or email photos and we will say what we think.
What the work covers
- Fusible link fire dampers
- Motorised smoke dampers
- Hospitals and care homes
- Riser dampers
- Offices and schools
- Wall and floor dampers
Stonor questions
Will you come out to Stonor?
Yes, smaller places are covered as well as towns. Photos of the system and directions to the site help us plan the visit.
Which fire and rescue service is responsible for Stonor?
It’s Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue Service, which covers Stonor. A report listing every damper, its location and its result is the easiest way to show the dampers are maintained.
Is TR19 cleaning required by law?
No. TR19® itself isn’t law; it’s a BESA specification. The legal duty comes from the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005: the responsible person must assess and reduce fire risk, and cleaning to TR19® is the recognised way to show grease is under control.
What if a fire damper will not close?
We note the failure and what we found. A repair or a replacement can follow as a remedial job and test it again.
What is TR19?
BESA’s ventilation hygiene specification in two main parts: TR19® Grease for kitchen extracts and TR19® Air for supply and extract systems. It isn’t legislation, but it’s the standard people check against.
How much does fire damper testing cost in Stonor?
We don’t publish prices, because the cost depends on the job: the size of the system, its condition, access and when we can work. We fix the price before we start.
What happens to the waste?
It leaves the site with us at the end of the visit. During the work, it’s contained so the area stays clean.
Is a quote from photos possible?
Often, yes. Photos of the system and the access, plus your opening hours and last report, are often enough. Larger or hidden systems need a survey on site first.
Multi-site and managed buildings
Running several sites is easier with one contractor. We cover South East England and London, so visits at different addresses can be planned together and kept on a regular cycle.
We also work for facilities teams across offices, schools and healthcare across Oxfordshire. Larger estates can be phased building by building around the people who use them.

What affects the quote in Stonor
The quote reflects the site in front of us. We consider:
- Parking and loading at the site
- How big the system is
- The condition of the system
- Any permits to work or inductions
Every site is different, so each one gets its own fixed quote. The size of the job, how we reach it, its condition and the working hours all play a part.
What to send for a quote
You do not need the technical terms. Just send:
- Anything you’ve noticed, such as smells, noise, drips or poor airflow
- The times we could work without disrupting the site
- How we’d reach plant on a roof or in a plant room
- The paperwork from the last visit, if you have it
We don’t publish a price list, because no two systems are the same. We look at your system first, from photos or on a visit, then send a fixed quote. To get going, call 0345 646 2711 or drop us a line.
Keeping the system healthy
Simple habits between visits make a real difference. Our advice:
- Add new dampers to the register as they’re fitted
- Book the next test before the year runs out
- Fix water leaks in plant rooms and risers promptly
- Keep damper test reports with the fire safety log
Pass the report to whoever keeps your fire risk assessment up to date, so the assessment reflects where the dampers stand. Faults on the report are worth closing off quickly.
Water is a damper’s enemy, so fix leaks and condensation near them promptly. Corrosion is a common reason blades stick.
Do you need fire damper testing in Stonor?
Under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, the responsible person has a duty to keep fire safety measures working, and dampers are part of those measures. Whoever that is, whether employer, owner, landlord, facilities manager or managing agent, needs to be able to show the dampers work.
Common reasons sites call us are:
- Blades that jam part-way when released
- Dampers that can’t be reached without an access panel
- Dirty dampers that may not close
- Dampers overdue for their annual drop test
If you manage an older building converted to a hotel or venue, like many historic houses in the area (Stonor Park is about 0.5 miles south-east), finding every damper is the first job.
What your quote should include
- What hours they’ll be on site
- Their accreditations, such as BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite, CHAS or SafeContractor
- When the next visit should be, and why
- Whether a survey comes first
