About our fire damper testing in Stockbridge
Fire dampers sit inside ductwork where it passes through a fire-resisting wall or floor. A fusible link holds the blade open until heat melts it, and the blade then drops to shut the duct. A drop test shows that the damper still does that when it matters, and every result is written down, damper by damper. Common call-outs are for dampers flagged on a fire risk assessment and motorised smoke dampers due for testing, across offices and schools, hospitals and care homes and wall and floor dampers.
In a village or hamlet like Stockbridge, there may be only a few buildings with fire dampers. Each damper still needs testing at least once a year.
It’s worth checking any contractor’s accreditations. Ours are BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite membership, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, plus CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001, with full insurance on top.

How it works
We’re used to working while the site is closed. A lot of visits happen overnight or at weekends, so a kitchen or building can carry on as usual the next day. The visit itself takes a morning or an afternoon for a small number of dampers, longer where there are many. For a village or hamlet like Stockbridge, tell us about narrow lanes, gates and parking when you book.
- We go through the damper schedule and any previous faults.
- We locate every damper and note any we cannot reach.
- Fire dampers are drop tested, and smoke dampers are tested through their controls.
- Passes are reset and any failures recorded with the reason.
- The report sets out the results, and we can quote to repair or replace failed dampers.
Before we arrive
- Let us know about parking and loading
- Let us know about permits to work or site inductions
- Name a contact who can let us in at the agreed time
Getting a quote
Every quote begins with a look at the system, either from pictures and details you send or from a site visit. After that, you get a fixed price for the work, before any work starts.

Common problems we fix in Stockbridge
Links and springs age like any other part. A link can be damaged, painted over or swapped for the wrong one, and a tired spring may not drive the blade home, and that only becomes clear during a drop test.
Most sites get in touch after spotting one of these:
- Rusted damper blades and springs
- Blades that jam part-way when released
- Fire dampers that haven’t been tested for over a year
- Dampers hidden with no access panel or hatch
If you manage a school site such as Stockbridge Primary & Pre-School, any fire dampers can be tested in the holidays.

Common questions in Stockbridge
Which fire authority looks after Stockbridge?
That is Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service. Keep each damper test report with the fire risk assessment and the building’s log book, ready to show.
Can you come to Stockbridge after we close?
Yes. We work evenings, overnight and at weekends. The site is handed back ready to open. When you ring 0345 646 2711, or email photos, mention when the site is quiet.
Can you come out in an emergency?
Yes, 24/7. Office hours are Monday to Friday, 8am to 6pm, and the emergency line covers the rest.
Which kinds of sites do you work on?
Any commercial site with kitchens or ventilation, from a small pub to a hospital. We work with hotels, schools, care homes, offices, retail and leisure sites.
What do you do with what you remove?
We contain it and take it with us. Grease, debris and waste water are collected as the work goes on rather than letting it spread.
How often should fire dampers be tested?
The guidance from BESA is at least annually, by a competent person. A test on completion of installation comes first.
What do you need from me for a quote?
A short description and a few photos, with the address and opening hours. If we need more, we’ll ask.
Do you offer maintenance contracts?
Yes. We run scheduled maintenance contracts, set at the interval the system needs. The report from each visit recommends the next date.
What the work involves, part by part
Ceiling voids and risers
Ceiling voids are where lots of dampers end up. We lift tiles where necessary and put them back as we found them.
Fusible link fire dampers
The common fire damper uses a link that holds the blade open. Heat melts the link and the blade falls shut across the duct. We release the blade, check it closes fully and reset it.
When it’s something else
In fairness, there are a few things this work won’t fix:
- Dampers that were never installed where they’re needed
- Control wiring problems outside the damper itself
- Gaps in the wall or floor around the damper
If you’re not sure, just ring 0345 646 2711, or send details by email and we will give you a straight answer.

Between visits
Looking after the system between visits is straightforward, and it helps at the next visit:
- Close off damper faults promptly
- Store test records alongside the fire risk assessment
- Keep to at least yearly testing
- Keep the damper register up to date after any building work
After testing, you get a report listing each of the fire and smoke dampers we tested, with its location and its result. File it with your fire safety log so it’s to hand for assessors and insurers.
Keeping to at least annual testing stops small faults turning into failed dampers. Faults caught early are easier to fix.

Leave it or put it right?
Faults found early are often simpler to put right. Years of corrosion and dirt can mean the whole damper needs replacing instead. Out of sight is the usual reason a rural system goes too long without attention.
Several systems or sites on one quote can make for a more efficient booking. Mention every system or site you need covered, and you will get one fixed quote.

What staff can safely do
A few tasks are always specialist work: entering ducts, working on fans, testing dampers and taking grease readings need training, the right equipment and safe access. That’s our job.
Staff cleaning and specialist work are not the same thing. Wiping filters daily and washing them weekly keeps the visible parts in order, but they do not reach the grease that builds up further in. That part needs specialist access and equipment.
