About our fire damper testing in Smarden
Wherever a duct crosses a fire-resisting wall or floor, there should be a fire damper inside it. A fusible link holds the blade open until heat melts it, and the blade then drops to shut the duct. A drop test shows that the damper still does that when it matters, and we record the result for every damper we test. If you have fire dampers that fail to drop shut and fire dampers nobody can get to, we can put it right, from fusible link fire dampers, hospitals and care homes and motorised smoke dampers onwards.
In rural areas, conversions, country hotels and care homes can have ductwork crossing fire-resisting walls, and the dampers in them are easily forgotten. The first visit starts by locating each damper.
The paperwork matters as much as the work. You get a written report with photos after every visit, covering the work done, any areas we couldn’t access and a recommended next date. File it in your maintenance log so it’s to hand when an insurer or inspector asks.

What affects the quote in Smarden
Before we fix a price, we need to know a few things. We look at:
- Parking and loading at the site
- Whether we need access equipment or extra panels
- The size of the system
- The condition of the system
No two sites are the same, so we price each one individually. The size of the job, how we reach it, its condition and the working hours all make a difference.
Asking for a quote
There’s no need for technical detail. It helps if you can send:
- Your last certificate, test record or report
- Your opening hours and when the area is out of use
- Where the plant sits or the system leaves the building, such as a roof or outside wall
- Anything you’ve noticed, such as smells, noise, drips or poor airflow
To help us quote: where the site is, what it is and its opening hours, a few photos and the last certificate or report, if there is one. Once you have those, phone us on 0345 646 2711 or send us an email.

Questions from Smarden
Which fire and rescue service is responsible for Smarden?
Fire safety enforcement in Smarden is handled by Kent Fire and Rescue Service. If a fire safety officer audits the building, they may ask for the latest damper test records.
Do you work in villages like Smarden?
Yes, smaller places are covered as well as towns. Just mention lanes, gates or anything else about the site when you book.
Do you work with multi-site operators?
Yes. Tell us the addresses and what each needs and you’ll get one fixed quote.
Will we have to shut during the visit?
Not normally. We work when the area is out of use, such as evenings, overnight, early mornings or weekends, so the site can carry on as normal.
Do you look at the system first?
Yes, every time. Diagnosis comes before treatment: the survey tells us what the system needs and how to reach it and the fixed quote is built on it.
How often does BESA say fire dampers should be tested?
BESA guidance calls for testing by a competent person at least once a year. Dampers should also be tested when they’re first installed.
What paperwork do we get after testing?
We test, record and report, rather than certify dampers to a standard. For each damper it shows the result and anything that needs putting right.
Can you test motorised smoke dampers?
Yes. Smoke dampers are motorised, so we test them by operating them through their controls. Each one is checked for full travel and the result recorded.
Multi-site and managed buildings
Running several sites is easier with one contractor. We cover South East England and London, so visits at different addresses can be planned together and kept to a regular schedule.
The Fire Safety Order 2005 puts the duty to manage fire risk on the responsible person, and that can be the employer, the owner, a landlord, a facilities manager or a managing agent. Where responsibility is shared, records matter even more.
Fire damper testing in Smarden: local notes
About 5.3 miles south-west of Smarden is Benenden Hospital, the nearest hospital. Where patients or residents may need help to leave a building, working dampers matter all the more. At about 42 miles from central London, Smarden sits well inside the area we cover. We work evenings, overnight and at weekends, so the visit fits around the site.
Site managers at schools such as Smarden Primary School normally find the summer break the easiest time for ceiling work like damper testing. Healthcare buildings such as Benenden Hospital (about 5.3 miles south-west) rely on fire compartments, and the dampers in them need testing at least annually.
Smarden is about 8 miles west of Ashford, in Kent. Smarden gets the same approach as every site we work on: a survey first, a fixed quote, work timed around your hours and a report with photos. Smarden is one of 922 towns, villages and districts in Kent where we work for commercial clients. We also work in Maidstone, around 11 miles away.
Every address in TN27 is covered for fire damper testing, from the main roads to the quietest streets. That includes premises on The Street, The Acorns and Water Lane and the roads around them. If your site is just outside Smarden, we cover Biddenden Green (1 mile north-east), Smarden Bell (1 mile north-west), Monk's Hill (1 mile south-west), Swift's Green (1 mile north-west) and Standen (2 miles south-west). We also work in nearby towns such as Maidstone (11 miles north-west), Ashford (8 miles east), Sittingbourne (13 miles north), Faversham (14 miles north-east), Kings Hill (15 miles north-west) and Davington (14 miles north-east).
Landmarks near Smarden
Typical jobs here are in premises near The Chequers Inn and the streets around them. The closest station to Smarden is Pluckley station, about 2.6 miles east. Other landmarks nearby include Romden Castle (1 mile east) and Benenden Hospital (5.3 miles south-west).
Leave it or put it right?
A damper that’s stuck open gives fire and smoke a route straight through a fire-resisting wall. Everything else about the compartment can be right and the duct still lets it down. It’s far better to find that out on a test than in a fire. Rural sites cannot always move to another kitchen or room when something fails.
The cost depends on how big the system is, what state it’s in and access to every part of it. We give you a fixed price before work begins, so there are no surprises.

How the job changes from site to site
Smoke dampers
Testing smoke dampers sometimes needs input from whoever looks after the control system. We agree the arrangements with you in advance.
Offices and retail
Offices and shops often have dampers above ceilings that are rarely opened. Testing can be done outside opening hours so the space stays open.
Staff cleaning versus specialist work
Away from the kitchen, the in-house job is mainly checking: keeping grilles clear, noting unusual noise or smells and logging filter changes. The inside of ducts and units needs a specialist.
Staff cleaning and specialist work aren’t the same thing. A daily filter wipe and a weekly filter wash keep grease down at the front of the system, but grease that has passed the filters is out of reach. Reaching it takes a specialist with the right equipment.
How the visit works
Your staff do not need to do much on the day. A contact on site lets us in at the agreed time and points us to the system, and the rest is down to us. Before we leave, the area is tidied and the paperwork follows. Pictures of the system and its access let us plan the work in Smarden before we set off.
- We plan access and timing with you first, including any out-of-hours work.
- Ceiling tiles and hatches are opened and each damper’s access panel removed.
- The blade is released and watched to make sure it closes fully.
- The damper is reset and its condition noted.
- Panels and tiles go back, and the results are written up.
Getting ready for the visit
- Clear loose items from the work area
- Find the previous report, if there is one
- Let us know about parking and loading
Ask for a quote
Quotes are quick. Send a few details and pictures, and we typically reply with a fixed quote within one working day. If we need to see the system first, we book a survey around your hours.
