Fire damper testing across Old Netley

About our fire damper testing in Old Netley

Each damper we test gets a location, a result and a note of its condition. Passes are reset and left ready to work, and any that fail are listed with the reason. That record belongs with the building’s fire safety paperwork. Common call-outs are for dampers that can’t be reached without an access panel and smoke dampers with no recent test, on offices and schools, fusible link fire dampers and hospitals and care homes.

In a village or hamlet like Old Netley, there may be only a few buildings with fire dampers. Each damper still needs testing at least once a year.

It’s worth checking any contractor’s accreditations. We’re a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, and we hold CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001, and we’re fully insured.

Different parts, different methods

Fusible link fire dampers

The link has to be in good order for the damper to work. We check its condition during the test and note anything that isn’t right.

Access panels

Over time, hatches and panels get covered up. Letting us know where they are speeds the visit up.

In-house cleaning or a specialist?

Away from the kitchen, the in-house job is mainly checking: clear grilles, a log of filter changes and reporting anything odd. The inside of ducts and units needs a specialist.

Logging matters as much as cleaning. A simple log of filter washes, wipe-downs and checks helps show that the system is managed between specialist visits, next to our reports.

Keeping the system healthy

Once we have finished, these simple steps help:

  • Don’t let hatches get painted shut or boarded over
  • Update the register when ductwork changes
  • Diary the annual test well ahead
  • Don’t let anything obstruct a damper’s blade

If we couldn’t get to a damper, the report says so and why, for example a missing panel or a covered hatch. Access panels can be fitted so those dampers are tested on the next visit.

The simplest way to avoid failures is to test on time, every year. Faults caught early are easier to fix.

Your questions about fire damper testing in Old Netley

Will you come out to Old Netley?

Yes, Old Netley is part of our area, however small the site. A survey first, from pictures or a visit, means we arrive with the right kit.

Which fire service covers Old Netley?

Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service is the fire and rescue service for Old Netley. If a fire safety officer audits the building, they may ask for the latest damper test records.

What if parts of the system cannot be reached?

They’re marked on the report. Often the fix is extra access, such as new panels in ductwork, and we can fit those.

Where does the waste go?

Waste is contained during the work and removed when we leave, including grease, debris and dirty water. We don’t leave it behind.

What paperwork do we get after testing?

The record we give you is a report of the tests, damper by damper. Any failures come with a note of the remedials needed.

How far ahead should we book?

For planned work, earlier is better, particularly if your next visit is nearly due. For emergencies, we take calls 24/7.

Which accreditations do you hold?

Our accreditations are CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001, alongside BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite membership, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease. Vent Hygiene Elite is run by BESCA and independently audited.

Do we lose a day’s trading?

Not normally. Visits are timed for when the area is closed, such as overnight or at a weekend, so the site can carry on as normal.

What affects the cost of fire damper testing

Every site gets its own quote. These are the things that affect it:

  • The condition we find in the survey
  • When the work can happen, such as evenings, overnight or weekends
  • How many systems or sites are involved
  • Travel, parking and unloading

Every site is different, so each one gets its own fixed quote. The size of the job, how we reach it, its condition and the working hours all make a difference.

Asking for a quote

To speed up the quote, please include:

  • The times we could work without disrupting the site
  • The site address and the type of premises
  • Problems your staff have spotted
  • The roof, plant room or outside wall the system runs to

To get a fixed quote, give us a ring on 0345 646 2711 or use the quote form with the site type, your trading hours and a short description of the system. A few photos and your last certificate or report help a lot. We usually come back within one working day.

What fire damper testing cannot fix

Before you book, it helps to know what’s not included:

  • Holes around ductwork in fire-resisting walls
  • Dampers that were never installed where they’re needed
  • Fire risk assessments, which need a fire risk assessor

If in doubt, phone us on 0345 646 2711 or email us and we will say what we think.

Parts of the system we cover

  • Wall and floor dampers
  • Motorised smoke dampers
  • Hospitals and care homes
  • Fusible link fire dampers
  • Offices and schools
  • Riser dampers

The process

Protection comes first: floors, worktops and anything near the work are covered. After that, the system is made safe and the work begins. It takes a couple of hours for a few dampers, and a day or more across a big site, and we clear up before we go. Somewhere as small as Old Netley, the date and timings are agreed with you well before the day.

  1. First we look at any damper register, drawings or earlier test reports.
  2. Dampers are located one by one and reached through their access panels.
  3. Every fire damper is dropped, and every smoke damper is tested through its controls.
  4. Dampers that close fully are reset and left open.
  5. We report on every damper, with faults and suggested remedials set out.

How to prepare

  • Make sure equipment near the work can be switched off and left to cool
  • Let us know about parking and loading
  • Make sure someone can let us in and lock up afterwards

Until a damper has been dropped, you cannot say whether it works. Testing turns it into a known pass or a known fault, with remedials offered for anything that fails, and that is something you can plan around. Our emergency line runs 24/7, but a planned visit to Old Netley is calmer for everyone.
