- Smoke dampers with no recent test
Why act early in Latimer
Testing every year builds a history for each damper, which shows patterns early. If the same damper keeps giving trouble, the record shows it long before it fails outright. If the system at a site near Latimer fails, there may be nowhere nearby to move to.
Putting the work off seldom saves money. Problems in a system tend to grow, which can make the next visit longer. If you’re not sure what’s needed, give us a ring on 0345 646 2711 or send us an email for straight advice and a fixed quote.

How we handle fire damper testing in Latimer
Wherever a duct crosses a fire-resisting wall or floor, there should be a fire damper inside it. A fusible link holds the blade open until heat melts it, and the blade then drops to shut the duct. A drop test shows that the damper still does that when it matters, and we record the result for every damper we test. If you have buildings with no damper register and smoke dampers with no recent test, we can put it right, from hospitals and care homes, offices and schools and motorised smoke dampers onwards.
In rural areas, conversions, country hotels and care homes can have ductwork crossing fire-resisting walls, and the dampers in them are easily forgotten. A first test usually starts with finding them all.
The report is your system’s health record: dated, with photos, and showing what was done. For TR19® Grease cleans, the certificate comes through the BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite portal and sits alongside the report.

Fixed quotes for fire damper testing in Latimer
Before we fix a price, we need to know a few things. We look at:
- The times the site is available
- Where the site is and how we reach it
- A single visit or a regular plan
- Access, including roofs, risers and ceiling voids
The cost depends on how big the system is, what state it’s in and access to every part of it. We give you a fixed price before we start, so there are no surprises.
Asking for a quote
What to send for a quote:
- Any symptoms, from odd noises to smells or leaks
- The postcode and the type of business
- How we’d reach plant on a roof or in a plant room
- Any previous report or certificate
To get a fixed quote, phone us on 0345 646 2711, or send details by email with the site type, your trading hours and a short description of the system. A few photos and your last certificate or report help a lot. We typically come back within one working day.
Honest limits
We will not sell you work that does not address the problem, so here are the limits:
- Fire-stopping gaps around the duct where it passes through the wall
- Signing off a building’s overall fire safety
- Faults in the alarm or building controls that signal smoke dampers
If in doubt, call us on 0345 646 2711 or email us and we’ll say what we think.
Parts of the system we cover
- Fusible link fire dampers
- Motorised smoke dampers
- Riser dampers
- Hospitals and care homes
- Offices and schools
- Wall and floor dampers
Staff cleaning versus specialist work
When your team notices a problem between visits, like drips, unusual noise, smells or damaged filters, they should report it rather than try to fix it. We’ll take a look and give you a fixed quote.
Day-to-day cleaning is something your team can do: wiping down canopy surfaces, cleaning filters and keeping a simple log. Inside the ducts, risers and fan is specialist work, which is where we come in.
Latimer buildings and fire safety
Food Standards Agency records list about 4 schools, colleges and universities and about 5 hospitals, care homes and childcare premises registered as food businesses within about 1.5 miles of central Latimer. Many buildings of this kind have ductwork through fire-resisting walls and floors, and the dampers at those points need testing at least annually. Latimer’s nearest hospital, Amersham Hospital, is about 3.1 miles south-west. Healthcare buildings rely on fire compartments to protect people who cannot easily move, and dampers keep those compartments sealed. Latimer sits within the area of Buckinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service. When a fire safety officer audits a non-domestic building, maintenance of systems like dampers can come up.
For schools like Little Chalfont Primary School, damper testing is easiest in the holidays, when corridors and ceilings are clear. Healthcare buildings such as Amersham Hospital (about 3.1 miles south-west) rely on fire compartments, and the dampers in them need testing at least annually. If you manage a historic building in the area (Chenies Manor House is about 1.1 miles south-east), dampers fitted during conversions can be hard to reach and need recording.
Latimer is about 2 miles east of Amersham, in Buckinghamshire. Latimer gets the same approach as every site we work on: a survey first, a fixed quote, work timed around your hours and a report with pictures. Across Buckinghamshire, we cover 263 places, and Latimer is one of them. We also work in London, around 23 miles away.

Multi-site and managed buildings
Facilities teams in offices, schools and healthcare sites book us too in Latimer and across Buckinghamshire. Larger estates can be phased building by building to keep disruption down.
Under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, the responsible person must assess and reduce fire risk, and that can be the employer, the owner, a landlord, a facilities manager or a managing agent. Where responsibility is shared, records matter even more.
Latimer questions
Can you get to a site in Latimer?
Yes. Villages and rural sites across the South East are part of our work, Latimer included. Let us know about access, parking and anything unusual about getting there when you book.
Can the work in Latimer be done at night or at weekends?
Yes, we can come after you close and finish before you open. Your customers, staff or residents in Latimer needn’t be disturbed. Your opening times are the first thing we ask for.
What types of premises do you cover?
Any commercial site with kitchens or ventilation, from a small pub to a hospital. We work with hotels, schools, care homes, offices, retail and leisure sites.
How long will damper testing take?
Testing takes from an hour or two in a small building to several visits on a large estate. Bigger sites can be phased, so phone us on 0345 646 2711, or send details by email for a quote.
Is a quote from pictures possible?
Yes, for many jobs. Send wide shots, close-ups of any access panels and anything that worries you, and we typically come back within one working day. If pictures aren’t enough, we will survey first.
Do we need to close while you work?
Not normally. We work when the area is out of use, such as evenings, overnight, early mornings or weekends, so the site can carry on as normal.
Is TR19 cleaning required by law?
No, not in itself. Insurers, fire officers and EHOs look to TR19® as the benchmark, and many insurers ask for proof of cleaning to it. The legal duty sits in the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 in England and Wales.
How much notice should we give?
That depends on the slot you want and the size of the job. Mention your preferred dates with your enquiry, and if it’s an emergency, call us any time.
Between visits
To keep the system working properly between visits:
- Add new dampers to the register as they’re fitted
- Keep damper test reports with the fire safety log
- Brief other trades about dampers in ceilings and risers
- Fix water leaks in plant rooms and risers promptly
Put the next test in the diary within twelve months. The guidance is at least once a year, and booking the same month each year keeps it simple.
Deal with leaks and condensation near dampers quickly. Corrosion is a common reason blades stick.
The process
We work around your opening hours, not the other way round. We book the visit for a time the area is closed, whether that is an evening, overnight or a weekend. When the team arrives, the work area is protected and the relevant equipment is switched off to cool, and the job takes a morning or an afternoon for a small number of dampers, longer where there are many. If you can send photos, we can arrive in Latimer knowing what to expect.
- Before the visit, we agree access, timings and any areas with restrictions.
- Ceiling tiles and hatches are opened and each damper’s access panel removed.
- We release each blade and check it shuts all the way.
- The damper is reset and its condition noted.
- We close everything up and send the results in a report.
Getting ready for the visit
- Allow time for equipment near the work to be turned off and cool down
- Let us know about permits to work or site inductions
- Arrange a key holder or contact on site
Getting a quote
