Fire damper testing in Jevington

Your questions about fire damper testing in Jevington

Can the work in Jevington be done at night or at weekends?

Yes, out-of-hours work is a big part of what we do. The work in Jevington can fit around your hours. Let us know the hours you’re closed and we’ll book within them.

Does being near the coast affect fire damper testing in Jevington?

It can. Jevington is within about 3 miles of the coast, and salt air speeds up corrosion. Corrosion is one of the things that can stop a damper closing, so it’s noted at every test.

What do you need from me for a quote?

A short description and a few pictures, with the address and opening hours. We’ll ask for anything else we need.

What do you do with what you remove?

Waste is contained during the work and removed when we leave, including grease, debris and dirty water. We don’t leave it behind.

Is there a survey before the work?

Yes, every time. Diagnosis comes before treatment: the survey tells us what the system needs and how to reach it and the fixed quote is built on it.

Whose job is it to make sure fire dampers are tested?

It sits with the building’s responsible person. That’s often the employer, owner, landlord, facilities manager or managing agent. We carry out the testing and give them the records.

What do you do to protect the area?

By covering it before any work starts. We keep the work contained and clean down when we finish.

Which accreditations do you hold?

Duct Doctor is a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease. CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001 are in place too, and we’re fully insured.

How we handle fire damper testing in Jevington

The point of testing is to find dampers that fail. Where a blade sticks, a link is damaged or corrosion has set in, we note it and can quote to repair or replace the damper, so the fault doesn’t just sit on a list. Typical jobs include dampers that can’t be reached without an access panel and dampers that stick or won’t close fully, across wall and floor dampers, fusible link fire dampers and offices and schools.

In rural areas, conversions, country hotels and care homes can have ductwork crossing fire-resisting walls, where the dampers are easy to overlook. The first visit starts by locating each damper.

We have been trading since 2009, and we are a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease. We also hold CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001, and we are fully insured.

Keeping the system healthy

No system stays clean for ever, but care slows the build-up. A few tips:

  • Never wedge or tie a damper open
  • Make sure access panels stay clear and usable
  • Keep damper test reports with the fire safety log
  • Keep to at least yearly testing

Tell other contractors where the dampers are, and that they mustn’t tie, wedge or obstruct them. If a damper has been disturbed, have it tested again.

Clean ductwork means less dust and grease reaching the dampers. It makes sense to plan duct cleaning and damper testing together.

What your team can do, and what needs us

Away from the kitchen, the in-house job is mainly checking: clear grilles, a log of filter changes and reporting anything odd. The inside of ducts and units needs a specialist.

Keep a record of what your team does. A dated log of in-house cleaning and checks helps show that the system is managed between specialist visits, alongside our reports.

What a clean won’t put right

We’ll always give you a straight diagnosis, so here’s what fire damper testing will not do:

  • Control wiring problems outside the damper itself
  • Missing dampers that a designer needs to specify
  • Sign-off of the whole building’s fire safety

Not sure which it is? You can call us on 0345 646 2711 or send us an email and we’ll tell you honestly before you book.

Parts of the system we cover

  • Fusible link fire dampers
  • Wall and floor dampers
  • Hospitals and care homes
  • Offices and schools
  • Riser dampers
  • Motorised smoke dampers

Part by part

Ceiling voids and risers

Ceiling voids are where lots of dampers end up. Ceiling tiles are lifted for access and replaced afterwards.

Smoke dampers

Because they’re linked to controls, smoke damper tests can need some coordination. We plan that with you before the visit.

Fire dampers in Jevington buildings

At about 3 miles from the coast, Jevington is close enough for sea air to matter. Dampers close to louvres and air intakes can corrode in sea air, and a corroded blade may not drop. The nearest hospital to Jevington is Eastbourne District General Hospital, about 2.3 miles east. Smaller healthcare sites, from surgeries to care homes, need the same annual damper test as a hospital. Jevington is covered by East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service. Under the Fire Safety Order, the responsible person has to keep fire safety systems, dampers included, in working order, and the fire authority enforces that in most non-domestic premises.

The nearest hospital, Eastbourne District General Hospital, is about 2.3 miles east; healthcare buildings like it are a reminder that dampers protect people who can’t move quickly. Alfriston Clergy House, about 2.7 miles west, is one of the historic houses near Jevington, and older buildings converted to new uses often have ventilation added later. If you manage a school site such as Willingdon Community School, any fire dampers can be tested in the holidays.

Jevington is about 3 miles west of Eastbourne, in East Sussex. Whatever kind of site you run in Jevington, we can take on fire damper testing. We can work out of hours so the site keeps running. 289 places in East Sussex are on our list, large and small. There’s also a page for Brighton, roughly 15 miles from Jevington.

The process

Protection comes first: sheeting goes over floors and surfaces close to the work. After that, the system is made safe and the work begins. It takes a morning or an afternoon for a small number of dampers, longer where there are many, and the area is cleaned down before we leave. Rural roads and tight entrances are worth telling us about before a visit to Jevington.

  1. We start with whatever records exist: registers, drawings or old reports.
  2. Dampers are located one by one and reached through their access panels.
  3. Every fire damper is dropped, and every smoke damper is tested through its controls.
  4. Each one that passes is reset, ready to work.
  5. The results go into a report, with failed dampers and remedials listed.

Preparing for the visit

  • Tell us where we can park and unload
  • Make sure someone can let us in and lock up afterwards
  • Mention any locked doors, roof access or ceiling voids
