Fire and smoke damper testing in Halton
We cover Halton for fire damper testing. Out-of-hours visits, a fixed quote and a written report with pictures as standard.
- Dampers that cannot be reached without an access panel
- Smoke dampers that need testing through their controls
- Fire dampers that fail to drop shut
How we handle fire damper testing in Halton
Some dampers haven’t been tested since the day they went in. Ceilings have gone up, access panels have been covered or lost, and the records have gone missing. We locate and test the dampers we can reach and record the ones we can’t, so you can see exactly what still needs access. If you have dampers clogged with dust or grease and dampers flagged on a fire risk assessment, we can put it right, from hospitals and care homes, offices and schools and fusible link fire dampers onwards.
Testing in a small place like Halton is planned around the journey and access, and the test itself is the same as in any city building.
The paperwork matters as much as the work. You get a written report with pictures after every visit, covering the work done, any areas we couldn’t access and a recommended next date. Keep it with your fire safety records so it’s ready for an insurer, fire officer or EHO.

Halton: your questions answered
Who enforces fire safety at workplaces in Halton?
Buckinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service is the fire and rescue service for Halton. BESA guidance is that every fire damper is tested at least once a year, so an officer or insurer may expect a report less than a year old.
Can fire dampers in schools around Halton be tested in the holidays?
Yes, holiday work suits schools best. There are about 7 schools, colleges and universities on the FSA’s food hygiene register within about 1.5 miles of Halton. Just call us on 0345 646 2711, or email photos with your term dates and we will plan around them.
Do you look at the system first?
Yes. We always survey first, from your pictures and details, or with a visit where needed. Then you get a fixed quote.
Do you have insurance?
Yes, fully. We also hold CHAS and SafeContractor, for sites that check contractor safety.
What happens to the waste?
It leaves the site with us when we go. During the work, it’s contained so the area stays clean.
Does the law say we must follow TR19?
No. TR19® is BESA’s specification, not legislation. The law is the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, which makes the responsible person assess and reduce fire risk, and TR19® is the benchmark for showing that grease in the extract is under control.
What happens to dampers you can’t get to?
We do not leave it off the report; we note it as not reached. With an access panel fitted, it can be tested on a return visit.
What is TR19?
It’s the industry benchmark for cleaning ventilation and kitchen extract systems, written by BESA. It covers how systems are inspected, cleaned and checked, and it takes a risk-based approach.
How it works
We turn up at the time agreed with you, often in the evening, overnight or at the weekend so the site keeps working. Anything that needs to be off for the work is switched off and left to cool first, and the area around the work is covered and protected. The work itself takes a couple of hours for a few dampers, and a day or more across a big site. If you can send pictures, we can arrive in Halton knowing what to expect.
- We plan access and timing with you first, including any out-of-hours work.
- We open up ceilings and hatches and take off each access panel.
- We release each blade and check it shuts all the way.
- The damper is reset and its condition noted.
- Panels and tiles go back, and the results are written up.
Getting ready for the visit
- Arrange a key holder or contact on site
- Let us know about parking and loading
- Dig out any earlier paperwork for the system
Getting a quote
Getting a quote doesn’t take long. Call or email with a few details and you’ll typically have a fixed price within one working day. Where a survey is needed, we arrange a time that suits the site.
Advice
Between visits
After the visit, a few habits help the work last:
- Keep the damper register up to date after any building work
- Store test records alongside the fire risk assessment
- Never wedge or tie a damper open
- Book the next test before the year runs out
Any damper that failed is listed with the reason, along with an offer to repair or replace them. Once the work is done, the damper is tested again and the record updated.
Where a damper sits in ductwork that collects dust or grease, keeping that ductwork clean helps. Duct cleaning and damper testing can be planned side by side.
When to call us in Halton
Fusible links and springs do not last for ever. A link can be damaged, painted over or swapped for the wrong one, and a tired spring may not drive the blade home, which only shows up when the damper is dropped.
Any of these means the system needs a check-up:
- Fire dampers that fail to drop shut
- Motorised smoke dampers due for testing
- Corroded dampers in damp risers and plant rooms
- Dampers overdue for their annual drop test
Stoke Mandeville Hospital, about 3.1 miles west of Halton, is the kind of building where dampers protect every compartment; smaller care sites need the same annual tests.
Before booking anyone
- How areas they cannot reach will be recorded
- Which accreditations they hold, and whether you can check them
- What paperwork you get at the end
- Proof of insurance

Schools, hospitals and care homes

Staff cleaning versus specialist work
Day-to-day cleaning is something your team can do: wiping down canopy surfaces, cleaning filters and keeping a simple log. What they can’t safely do is clean inside the ductwork, the fan or the risers, and that’s where we come in.
Keep a record of what your team does. A simple log of filter washes, wipe-downs and checks helps show that the system is managed between specialist visits, next to our reports.
