Datchet fire damper testing
Looking for fire damper testing in Datchet? We survey first, send you a fixed quote and work around your opening hours, then sign off with a report and photos.
- Dirty dampers that may not close
- Fire damper items raised by an assessor
- Fire dampers that haven’t been tested for over a year
How the visit works
When we arrive, we check the system against the survey or the pictures you sent. If anything is different, we talk it through with the person on site before carrying on. From there, it takes a morning or an afternoon for a small number of dampers, longer where there are many. Getting to the system matters more than parking in a place like Datchet, so let us know how to reach it.
- We start with whatever records exist: registers, drawings or old reports.
- We find every damper and open it up through the access panel.
- Every fire damper is dropped, and every smoke damper is tested through its controls.
- We reset every damper that passes and check it’s left open.
- We report on every damper, with faults and suggested remedials set out.
How to prepare
- Agree a time when the area can be out of use
- Let us know about parking and loading
- Let us know about permits to work or site inductions

Fire damper testing in Datchet, done properly
BESA guidance is that fire dampers should be tested by a competent person when they’re installed and at least annually after that. Spring-operated dampers need testing every year as a minimum. We carry out fire damper testing for buildings in Datchet and give you the records to show it’s been done. The work covers riser dampers, offices and schools and hospitals and care homes, and the jobs we see most are blades that jam part-way when released and motorised smoke dampers due for testing.
Buildings around Datchet may have just a handful of dampers, but each one still needs drop testing at least once a year, with the result recorded.
Every visit ends with a written report and pictures, so you have a record of what was done and when. Where the work is a TR19® Grease clean, the certificate is issued through the BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite portal.

Staff cleaning versus specialist work
Your own staff can handle the daily basics: wiping down canopy surfaces, cleaning filters and keeping a simple log. What they can’t safely do is clean inside the ductwork, the fan or the risers, and that is where we come in.
When your team notices a problem between visits, like drips, unusual noise, smells or damaged filters, it’s best reported rather than tackled in-house. We will take a look and give you a fixed quote.
Fire damper testing around Datchet
Going by the FSA’s register, there are about 14 schools, colleges and universities, about 9 caring premises (care homes, nurseries and hospitals) and about 5 hotels, B&Bs and guest houses serving food across Datchet and its immediate surroundings (about a mile and a half). If any of them has ducted ventilation, its dampers need an annual drop test at least. About 1.7 miles north-west of Datchet is Upton Hospital, the nearest hospital. Where patients or residents may need help to leave a building, working dampers matter all the more. Datchet is covered by Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service. Under the Fire Safety Order, the responsible person has to keep fire safety systems, dampers included, in working order, and the fire authority enforces that in most non-domestic premises.
If you manage an older building converted to a hotel or venue, like many historic houses in the area (Frogmore House is about 1 mile south-west), finding every damper is the first job. If you manage offices, shops or flats near Datchet station, the ductwork in them may pass through fire-resisting walls and floors, and any dampers need testing at least once a year. Site managers at schools such as Datchet St Mary's CofE Primary School typically find the summer break the easiest time for ceiling work like damper testing.

What a clean won’t put right
We will always give you a straight diagnosis, so here’s what this work cannot put right:
- Missing dampers that a designer needs to specify
- Sign-off of the whole building’s fire safety
- Gaps in the wall or floor around the damper
If you are not sure, just ring 0345 646 2711 or drop us a line and we’ll give you a straight answer.
What the work covers
- Fusible link fire dampers
- Offices and schools
- Riser dampers
- Wall and floor dampers
- Hospitals and care homes
- Motorised smoke dampers
What the work involves, part by part
Ceiling voids and risers
Damp plant areas are hard on dampers. We note any rust or water damage on the report so it can be dealt with.
Smoke dampers
A smoke damper is opened and closed by a motor, not a link. We test them through their controls and check each blade travels fully.
How we price fire damper testing
There’s no set price list, because sites vary so much. What we look at:
- Site requirements such as sign-in and permits
- A single visit or a regular plan
- The condition we find in the survey
- The number of sites or systems
We do not list prices on the website, because each job is priced on what it involves. For a fixed quote, call 0345 646 2711, or email photos, and we will explain what it covers.
What to send for a quote
Many jobs can be priced from photos and some basics. Useful things to send:
- The paperwork from the last visit, if you have it
- The times we could work without disrupting the site
- How we’d reach plant on a roof or in a plant room
- Where the site is and what kind of site it is
Need a price for fire damper testing? Please phone us on 0345 646 2711 or drop us a line and tell us about the site. We will explain what we’d do and send a fixed quote before anything is booked.
Multi-site and managed buildings
We regularly work with managing agents. Tell us the site, the work and the access arrangements, and we will send a fixed quote.
Under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, the responsible person must assess and reduce fire risk, and that can be the employer, the owner, a landlord, a facilities manager or a managing agent. With shared responsibility, good records help everyone.
Datchet: your questions answered
Can you test school fire dampers in Datchet out of term?
Yes, holiday work suits schools best. Around Datchet, the Food Standards Agency lists about 14 schools and colleges with registered kitchens within a mile and a half or so. Tell us your holiday dates and we’ll book the visit for when the site is empty.
Who enforces fire safety at workplaces in Datchet?
Fire safety enforcement in Datchet is handled by Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service. If a fire safety officer audits the building, they may ask for the latest damper test records.
How far ahead should we book?
Earlier is better, especially for out-of-hours work. We normally quote within one working day, and emergencies are covered by our 24/7 line.
Do you certify fire dampers?
You get a test report recording every damper we tested, showing where it is, whether it passed and what we found. It belongs in your fire safety log.
Who has the duty to keep fire dampers working?
Under the Fire Safety Order 2005, it’s the responsible person, such as the employer, owner, landlord or managing agent. They must keep fire safety measures, including dampers, in working order.
Are you insured?
Yes. We carry full insurance and have been trading since 2009.
Where does the waste go?
Waste is contained during the work and removed when we leave, including grease, debris and dirty water. None of it is left on site.
Do you test dampers in the evening or at weekends?
Yes. Testing can be booked outside working hours, which helps where ceilings cannot be opened during the day. Hospitals and care homes are planned with the site team.
Keeping the system healthy
Aftercare is simple, and it helps at the next visit:
- Keep ceiling hatches and duct panels easy to open
- Don’t let anything obstruct a damper’s blade
- Keep to at least yearly testing
- Get remedials done soon after a failed test
If we couldn’t get to a damper, the report says so and why, such as no access panel or a blocked hatch. We can fit access panels so they can be tested next time.
Clean ductwork means less dust and grease reaching the dampers. Duct cleaning and damper testing can be planned side by side.
