Fire damper testing across Crampmoor

Fire damper testing in Crampmoor, done properly

A drop test is simple in principle: we release the blade, watch it close fully, then reset it. We test dampers for sites in Crampmoor and the rest of Hampshire, logging each one so the record builds year on year. If you have smoke dampers with no recent test and dampers hidden with no access panel or hatch, we can put it right.

In rural areas, conversions, country hotels and care homes can have ductwork crossing fire-resisting walls, and the dampers in them are easily forgotten. A first test usually starts with finding them all.

We have been trading since 2009, and we are a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease. CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001 are in place too, and we carry full insurance.

The process

Night work is normal for us. A lot of visits happen overnight or at weekends, so the site can open as normal afterwards. On site, the work takes anything from a couple of hours for a handful of dampers to a full day for a large building. In a small place like Crampmoor, the journey is planned ahead and the visit arranged around the site’s hours.

  1. First we look at any damper register, drawings or earlier test reports.
  2. Each damper is located and reached through its access panel.
  3. We release each fire damper blade and operate smoke dampers from their controls.
  4. Dampers that close fully are reset and left open.
  5. You get a report listing each damper, its result and any remedials needed.

Getting ready for the visit

  • Mention any parking or loading restrictions
  • Mention any locked doors, roof access or ceiling voids
  • Make sure someone can let us in and lock up afterwards

What fire damper testing looks like in Crampmoor

Going by the FSA’s register, there are about 3 schools, colleges and universities and about 7 caring premises (care homes, nurseries and hospitals) serving food within about 1.5 miles of central Crampmoor. Buildings like these often have ducted ventilation, and wherever a duct crosses a fire-resisting wall or floor there should be a damper, tested at least once a year. Crampmoor’s nearest hospital, Romsey Community Hospital, is about 1.4 miles south-west. Healthcare buildings rely on fire compartments to protect people who cannot easily move, and dampers keep those compartments sealed. The fire and rescue service for Crampmoor is Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service. Its fire safety officers enforce the Fire Safety Order in most non-domestic buildings, and that covers fire safety systems such as dampers.

If you manage a historic building in the area (Mottisfont Abbey is about 4.4 miles north-west), dampers fitted during conversions can be hard to reach and need recording. Healthcare buildings such as Romsey Community Hospital (about 1.4 miles south-west) rely on fire compartments, and the dampers in them need testing at least annually.

Crampmoor is about 1 mile north-east of Romsey, in Hampshire. Across the SO51 area, we can carry out fire damper testing at your premises. We cover 683 places across Hampshire, from busy centres to quieter spots. Our Southampton page covers sites nearby (6 miles or so).

All of SO51 is within our area for fire damper testing, from busy streets to back roads. Local streets include The Straight Mile and Crampmoor Lane, all of which we cover for fire damper testing. Close by, we work in Gosport (1 mile east), Ampfield (1 mile east), Abbotswood (1 mile west), Braishfield (1 mile north) and Knapp (2 miles north-east). We also work in nearby towns such as Winchester (7 miles north-east), Eastleigh (5 miles south-east), Fareham (15 miles south-east), Andover (14 miles north), Totton (6 miles south) and Chandler's Ford (3 miles south-east).

Crampmoor: your questions answered

Do you test dampers in schools in Crampmoor during the holidays?

Yes, and it’s the easiest time to do it. Food Standards Agency records list about 3 schools, colleges and universities with registered kitchens within about a mile and a half of Crampmoor. Just ring 0345 646 2711 or drop us a line with your term dates and we will plan around them.

Do you work at weekends in Crampmoor?

Yes, evening, overnight and weekend work is normal for us. It means the site in Crampmoor keeps running as normal. Let us know the hours you’re closed and we’ll book within them.

Will we have to shut during the visit?

Not usually. The area we’re working in has to be out of use while we are there, so we book a time when it would be closed anyway.

What does fire damper testing cost?

We do not publish prices, because the cost depends on the job: the size of the system, its condition, access and when we can work. You get a fixed price before any work starts.

Can you fix fire dampers that fail?

The fault is recorded and explained in the report. A repair or a replacement can follow as a remedial job and test it again.

What do you do with what you remove?

Waste is contained during the work and removed when we leave, from grease and debris to used cleaning water. None of it is left on site.

What do you need from me for a quote?

Some photos and a quick description of the system plus the address and your hours. If we need more, we’ll ask.

Are you insured?

Yes. Full insurance covers our work and have been trading since 2009.

Signs you need fire damper testing in Crampmoor

Corrosion is another common cause of failure. Condensation, leaks and damp plant rooms corrode the parts that need to move, and the damper can seize quietly where no one sees it.

It’s time to book a visit if you see:

  • Dampers overdue for their annual drop test
  • Dirty dampers that may not close
  • Blades that jam part-way when released
  • Smoke dampers with no recent test

School buildings such as Cupernham Infant School are normally tested in the holidays, wherever they have dampers.

What to look for in a quote

  • Proof of accreditation you can verify

  • Whether they’re fully insured

What affects the quote in Crampmoor

A fixed price needs a few facts first. We look at:

  • The scale of the work
  • Working hours and out-of-hours timing
  • Whether it’s a one-off visit or part of a schedule
  • Travel, parking and unloading

Whatever the type of site, the quote works the same way: the size of the job, access, condition and working hours. Call for a fixed quote and we’ll go through it with you.

Asking for a quote

The more you tell us, the more accurate the quote. When you get in touch, it helps to send:

  • The roof, plant room or outside wall the system runs to
  • The times we could work without disrupting the site
  • Close-ups of filters, grilles, hatches or access panels
  • The postcode and the type of business

For a fixed quote, phone us on 0345 646 2711, or send details by email and tell us the type of site, your opening hours and roughly what the system looks like. Photos and the last report, if you have one, make the quote quicker. We normally come back within one working day.

What the work involves, part by part

Fusible link fire dampers

For dampers closed by a spring, BESA guidance is annual testing as a minimum. A weak spring or a sticking blade shows up when the damper is dropped.

Access panels

A damper can only be tested if it can be reached. That normally means an access panel in the duct, plus a way through the ceiling or wall.

Multi-site and managed buildings

When the building owner and the occupier are different, it’s worth checking the lease for who maintains the systems. We can quote either party and send the paperwork to whoever needs it.

We also work for facilities teams across offices, schools and healthcare across Hampshire. Work can be phased by floor, building or site to keep disruption down.

What a clean will not put right

In fairness, some problems need a different fix:

  • Gaps in the wall or floor around the damper
  • Ductwork crossing a fire wall with no damper fitted
  • Control wiring problems outside the damper itself

Not sure which it is? You can call 0345 646 2711 or send us an email and we will tell you honestly before booking.

Parts of the system we cover

  • Wall and floor dampers
  • Hospitals and care homes
  • Fusible link fire dampers
  • Riser dampers
  • Motorised smoke dampers
  • Offices and schools

Why deal with it now?

Fire risk assessors and insurers may ask to see damper test records. Having a current report ready for a building in Crampmoor saves a scramble when someone asks. In a small place like Crampmoor, a system that fails can take a site out of use.

A single site or a whole portfolio, we price it on the same basis: what needs doing, how we get to it and when. You will have a fixed price before any work starts.
