  • Dampers that were never installed where they’re needed

Not sure which it is? You can call 0345 646 2711 or drop us a line and we’ll tell you honestly before you book.

How we handle fire damper testing in Canewdon

The point of testing is to find dampers that fail. When one sticks, has a damaged link or is corroded, we report it and offer remedials, so the fault does not just sit on a list. If you have missing or out-of-date damper records and dampers overdue for their annual drop test, we can put it right, from fusible link fire dampers, riser dampers and offices and schools onwards.

Testing in a small place like Canewdon is planned around the journey and access, and every damper is drop tested, reset and recorded, the same as anywhere.

Our accreditations include CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001, and we’re fully insured. On top of that, we are a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, and we’ve been trading since 2009.

How it works

Protection comes first: floors, worktops and anything near the work are covered. Then we make the system safe and start. It takes a morning or an afternoon for a small number of dampers, longer where there are many, and we clear up before we go. Pictures of the system and its access let us plan the work in Canewdon before we set off.

  1. First we check the schedule and the last set of results.
  2. Each damper is found and checked for access.
  3. We test fire dampers by dropping them and smoke dampers by operating them through the controls.
  4. Dampers that pass are reset, and failures are logged with what we found.
  5. We report the results and offer remedials on failed dampers.

Getting ready for the visit

  • Make sure equipment near the work can be switched off and left to cool
  • Tell us where we can park and unload
  • Name a contact who can let us in at the agreed time

How to get a quote

Photos are the quickest way to a quote: wide shots of the system, close-ups of anything that worries you and how we’d get to it. Add the site type and your opening hours, and we can price many jobs without a visit.

Advice

Aftercare tips

Aftercare is simple, and it makes the next visit easier:

  • Update the register when ductwork changes
  • Warn anyone working in ceiling voids about the dampers
  • Keep to at least yearly testing
  • Don’t let anything obstruct a damper’s blade

Share the results with your fire risk assessor, so the assessment reflects where the dampers stand. Outstanding faults should be dealt with, not left on file.

A simple register of every damper helps a great deal: where each damper is, what kind it is and when it was last tested. It stops dampers getting lost as the building changes.

Why it’s worth doing now in Canewdon

A sticking blade caught on an annual test can be a small repair. Years of corrosion and dirt can mean the whole damper needs replacing instead. It’s simpler to plan the work at Canewdon now than to arrange it in a hurry later.

Kitchens, offices, schools and hospitals are all priced the same way: the size of the job, access, condition and working hours. Call for a fixed quote and we will go through it with you.

Your questions about fire damper testing in Canewdon

Can you get to a site in Canewdon?

Yes, we work in villages as well as towns, and Canewdon is covered. Just mention lanes, gates or anything else about the site when you book.

Can the work in Canewdon be done at night or at weekends?

Yes, nights and weekends are routine for us. It means the site in Canewdon keeps running as normal. Your opening times are the first thing we ask for.

Who has the legal duty for fire safety?

That depends on who controls the premises. Under the Fire Safety Order 2005, it’s the responsible person, which can be the employer, the owner, a landlord, an FM or a managing agent.

How long does fire damper testing take?

Testing takes a few hours for a single floor, with bigger buildings phased over more than one visit. Large buildings can be split over several visits, so give us a ring on 0345 646 2711, or email photos for a quote.

Will we have to shut during the visit?

Not typically. Booking the work out of hours means the site can carry on as normal. Larger jobs can be phased over several visits to keep things running.

What paperwork do we get after testing?

We test, record and report, rather than certify dampers to a standard. It lists each damper, the result and any remedials needed.

How much does fire damper testing cost?

It depends on the site, so we quote each one individually. For a quote, call 0345 646 2711 or use the quote form with the site type, opening hours and a few pictures.

How often do fire dampers need drop testing?

BESA guidance calls for testing by a competent person at least once a year. A test on completion of installation comes first.

Multi-site and managed buildings

We regularly work with managing agents. Tell us the site, the work and the access arrangements and we will come back with a fixed quote.

Running several sites is easier with one contractor. We cover South East England and London, so a run of sites can go into one programme and kept on a regular cycle.

Common problems we fix in Canewdon

Fusible links and springs don’t last for ever. A link can be damaged, painted over or swapped for the wrong one, and a tired spring may not drive the blade home, which only shows up when the damper is dropped.

What we are most often called out for:

  • Dampers that stick or will not close fully
  • Dampers flagged on a fire risk assessment
  • Missing or out-of-date damper records
  • Dampers that cannot be reached without an access panel

Southend University Hospital, about 4.9 miles south-west of Canewdon, is the kind of building where dampers protect every compartment; smaller care sites need the same annual tests.

Access panels

Testing depends on getting to the damper. That usually means an access panel in the duct, plus a way through the ceiling or wall.

Offices and retail

In offices and retail units, dampers tend to be hidden above working areas. Testing can be done outside opening hours to keep disruption down.
