Fire damper testing in California

What happens if it’s left?

When something goes wrong, people ask what checks were in place. A damper test log helps show the responsible person kept on top of things, and you can only produce records for tests that took place. Our emergency line runs 24/7, but a planned visit to California is calmer for everyone.

What you pay reflects the actual work. That’s why we survey first, from photos or on site, and the price is agreed before any work starts.

Fire damper testing for kitchens and businesses in California

Ductwork can carry fire and smoke between compartments, and the damper is what stops it. That depends entirely on the blade closing all the way. Annual drop testing is how you know for the dampers in your building. If you’re dealing with dampers flagged on a fire risk assessment and dampers clogged with dust or grease, we can help, from riser dampers, fusible link fire dampers and wall and floor dampers onwards.

Rural buildings that have been converted or extended can have ducts passing through fire-resisting walls, where the dampers are easy to overlook. A first test usually starts with finding them all.

For insurers and inspectors, the record counts. So every job comes with a written report and photos, and grease extract cleans come with a TR19® certificate issued through the BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite portal.

How the visit works

The first job on site is protection: sheeting goes over floors and surfaces close to the work. After that, the system is made safe and the work begins. The work on site takes anything from a couple of hours for a handful of dampers to a full day for a large building, and the area is cleaned down before we leave. Somewhere like California, lanes, gates and parking are worth mentioning in advance.

  1. Before the visit, we agree access, timings and any areas with restrictions.
  2. Ceiling tiles and hatches are opened and each damper’s access panel removed.
  3. The blade is released and watched to make sure it closes fully.
  4. We reset it and record any dirt, corrosion or damage.
  5. Panels and tiles go back, and the results are written up.

Getting ready for the visit

  • Mention any sign-in, permit or induction we need
  • Clear the space around the work
  • Make sure equipment near the work can be switched off and left to cool

What a clean will not put right

In fairness, there are a few things this work won’t fix:

  • Deciding where dampers should be fitted
  • Fire-stopping gaps around the duct where it passes through the wall
  • Faults in the alarm or building controls that signal smoke dampers

If you’re not sure, just call us on 0345 646 2711 or email us and we’ll give you a straight answer before you book.

What we work on in California

  • Riser dampers
  • Hospitals and care homes
  • Fusible link fire dampers
  • Motorised smoke dampers
  • Wall and floor dampers
  • Offices and schools

Between visits

Think of this as the after-treatment advice, short and simple:

  • Act on failed dampers rather than leaving them on file
  • Warn anyone working in ceiling voids about the dampers
  • Don’t let anything obstruct a damper’s blade
  • Fix water leaks in plant rooms and risers promptly

If we couldn’t get to a damper, the report says so and why, such as no access panel or a blocked hatch. We can fit access panels so they can be tested next time.

Keeping to at least annual testing stops small faults turning into failed dampers. Faults caught early are easier to fix.

Common questions in California

Do you test dampers in schools in California during the holidays?

Yes, and it’s the easiest time to do it. Food Standards Agency records list about 6 schools, colleges and universities with registered kitchens within about a mile and a half of California. Just phone us on 0345 646 2711 or email us with your term dates and we will plan around them.

Who is the fire and rescue service for California?

That’s Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service. Keep each damper test report with the fire risk assessment and the building’s log book, ready to show.

Can you test out of hours?

Yes. Evenings, nights and weekends are all possible, so offices, shops and schools can carry on as normal. We plan the visit around when the building is quietest.

How much does fire damper testing cost?

Size, condition, access and working hours all affect the cost. Call for a fixed quote, typically ready within one working day.

Do you have a 24/7 line?

Yes, 24/7. Office hours are Monday to Friday, 8am to 6pm, and the emergency line covers the rest.

How long does fire damper testing take?

As a guide, it takes from an hour or two in a small building to several visits on a large estate. It comes down mainly to how many dampers there are and how easy they are to get to.

What happens to dampers you cannot get to?

We don’t leave it off the report; we note it as not reached. Once there’s a panel or a way through the ceiling, it can be tested.

How often does BESA say fire dampers should be tested?

At least once a year, under BESA guidance, plus a test when the damper is first installed. Some sites choose to test more often where the risk is higher.

How we price fire damper testing

The survey tells us what the work involves. The main factors are:

  • The size of the system
  • Whether we need access equipment or extra panels
  • Where the site is and how we reach it
  • The times the site is available

Combining work into one visit or one programme can make for a more efficient booking. Tell us about everything you’d like looked at, and you will get one fixed quote.

What we need to know

You don’t need the technical terms. Just send:

  • Where the site is and what kind of site it is
  • Where the plant sits or the system leaves the building, such as a roof or outside wall
  • Your last certificate, test record or report
  • The times we could work without disrupting the site

Every quote begins with a look at the system, either from pictures and details you send or from a site visit. Then we send a fixed price so you know the cost before we start.

What your team can do, and what needs us

Some jobs should never be done in-house: opening up ductwork, cleaning fans, drop testing fire dampers and measuring grease need training, the right equipment and safe access. Leave those to us.

If your staff spot something between visits, like drips, unusual noise, smells or damaged filters, it’s best reported rather than tackled in-house. We can diagnose it and quote.

Common problems we fix in California

The law puts a duty on the responsible person to keep fire safety systems, dampers included, in working order. Employers, owners, landlords and managing agents all need evidence that the dampers have been checked.

Most sites get in touch after spotting something like this:

  • Dampers affected by leaks or condensation
  • Fire dampers nobody can get to
  • Fire dampers with no recent test record
  • Damper actions from a fire risk assessment

The nearest hospital, Wokingham Hospital, is about 2.6 miles north-east; healthcare buildings like it are a reminder that dampers protect people who can’t move quickly.

What your quote should include

  • Whether the work can be done while the site is closed
  • Proof of accreditation you can verify
  • Whether the whole system is included, or only the parts that are easy to reach
  • Whether they recommend a next date
