Fire damper testing in Brooklands
The idea behind drop testing is straightforward: we release the blade, watch it close fully, then reset it. We test dampers for sites in Brooklands and the rest of Surrey, keeping a log for each damper so there’s a history to look back on. Typical jobs include dampers flagged on a fire risk assessment and fire dampers with no recent test record, on offices and schools, wall and floor dampers and riser dampers.
Around a place like Brooklands, dampers tend to be in schools, care homes, surgeries and hotels rather than big offices. The law on keeping them working does not change with the size of the place.
Our accreditations include CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001, and we are fully insured. On top of that, we are a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, trading since 2009.

Part by part
Fusible link fire dampers
Most fire dampers are held open by a fusible link. When the link reaches its set temperature it melts, and the blade drops to close the duct. Testing means dropping the blade, checking the full close and resetting it.
Access panels
Testing depends on getting to the damper. That usually means an access panel in the duct, plus a way through the ceiling or wall.
Staff cleaning versus specialist work
Good housekeeping makes our visits easier, not unnecessary. Clean filters and tidy surfaces slow the build-up, but the parts you cannot see still need a specialist at the right interval.
Day-to-day cleaning is something your team can do: wiping canopies, washing grease filters and recording it in a log. What they can’t safely do is clean inside the ductwork, the fan or the risers, which is where we come in.
The process
Our technicians bring everything the work needs, including protection sheets, the right tools and access kit. You only need to give us clear access and switch off what needs to be off. On site, the work takes anything from a couple of hours for a handful of dampers to a full day for a large building. For a place like Brooklands, we load the van from the survey notes so the work can be done in one visit where possible.
- First we look at any damper register, drawings or earlier test reports.
- Each damper is located and reached through its access panel.
- Every fire damper is dropped, and every smoke damper is tested through its controls.
- Dampers that close fully are reset and left open.
- The results go into a report, with failed dampers and remedials listed.
How to prepare
- Let us know how we reach the system, including roofs, risers and plant rooms
- Agree a time when the area can be out of use
- Name a contact who can let us in at the agreed time

Photos are enough for some jobs, while others need a look on site. Big or complicated sites, and systems that are hard to see in photos, get a survey first. Either way, the quote is fixed before any work is booked.

Fire damper testing around Brooklands
Food Standards Agency data includes about 7 schools, colleges and universities and about 20 caring premises (care homes, nurseries and hospitals) within 1.5 miles or so of the middle of Brooklands. Many buildings of this kind have ductwork through fire-resisting walls and floors, and the dampers at those points need testing at least annually. About 2.7 miles north-east of Brooklands is No. 2 New Zealand General Hospital, the nearest hospital. Hospitals are a good example of a building with fire dampers across many floors and departments. Brooklands sits within the area of Surrey Fire and Rescue Service. Under the Fire Safety Order, the responsible person has to keep fire safety systems, dampers included, in working order, and the fire authority enforces that in most non-domestic premises.
For schools like Heathside School, damper testing is easiest in the holidays, when corridors and ceilings are clear. If you manage offices, shops or flats near Weybridge station, the ductwork in them may pass through fire-resisting walls and floors, and any dampers need testing at least once a year.
Brooklands is about 1 mile south-west of Weybridge, in Surrey. Anywhere in KT13, we can take on fire damper testing. Brooklands is one of 395 towns, villages and districts in Surrey where we work for fire damper testing. For sites nearby, see our Guildford page (9 miles or so).

Do you need fire damper testing in Brooklands?
Dampers are hidden above ceilings, inside risers and behind boxing. If there’s no hatch to reach them, they slip off everyone’s list, and one that cannot be reached can’t be tested.
The symptoms we’re asked about most include:
- Rusted damper blades and springs
- Dampers flagged on a fire risk assessment
- Smoke dampers with no recent test
- Fire dampers nobody can get to
Byfleet Manor, about 1.7 miles south, is one of the historic houses near Brooklands, and older buildings converted to new uses often have ventilation added later.

What happens if it’s left?
Until a damper has been dropped, you cannot say whether it works. A test gives you a clear answer, and we can offer remedials for any that fail, and that’s something you can plan around. A visit arranged in advance is far less disruptive than a callout on a busy day.

Your questions about fire damper testing in Brooklands

Do you offer emergency callouts?
Yes, any time. For anything urgent, such as a fan failure or damage after a fire, ring the 24/7 line and we will talk you through the next steps.

Which kinds of sites do you work on?
All kinds of commercial and public premises: kitchens, offices, schools, healthcare, retail, leisure and food production. We fit the work around how the site operates.
How do you deal with dampers that cannot be reached?
We record it as not tested and explain why. Access panels can be installed so it’s tested on the next visit.
Do you carry out smoke damper testing?
Yes, alongside fire damper drop testing. Smoke and fire dampers are reported together, with any faults set out clearly.
Looking after it afterwards
After the visit, a few habits help the work last:
- Keep cables and fixings away from damper blades
- Make sure access panels stay clear and usable
- Add new dampers to the register as they’re fitted
- Book the next test before the year runs out
Dampers we couldn’t reach are listed with the reason, for example a missing panel or a covered hatch. Access panels can be fitted so those dampers are tested on the next visit.
The simplest way to avoid failures is to test on time, every year. A blade that is just starting to stick is easier to deal with than a seized one.
