Fire damper testing for kitchens and businesses in Brook
Wherever a duct crosses a fire-resisting wall or floor, there should be a fire damper inside it. A fusible link holds the blade open until heat melts it, and the blade then drops to shut the duct. A drop test shows that the damper still does that when it matters, and we record the result for every damper we test. We’re often asked to deal with dampers flagged on a fire risk assessment and smoke dampers with no recent test, on fusible link fire dampers, offices and schools and motorised smoke dampers.
In rural areas, conversions, country hotels and care homes can have ductwork crossing fire-resisting walls, where the dampers are easy to overlook. The first visit starts by locating each damper.
Nothing is signed off by word of mouth: a dated report with photos of the work, and for TR19® Grease cleans, a certificate issued through the BESCA VHE portal. Any parts we couldn’t reach are recorded on it too.

Different parts, different methods
Ceiling voids and risers
Where ductwork runs up through a building, there are often dampers at every floor. We work through them floor by floor so nothing is missed.
Fusible link fire dampers
Spring-operated fire dampers need testing at least once a year. A weak spring or a sticking blade shows up when the damper is dropped.
What fire damper testing looks like in Brook
We cover Brook, about 35 miles from central London, as part of our work across London and the South East. A survey and a fixed quote come first, then the visit at a time that suits you. Surrey Fire and Rescue Service covers Brook. When a fire safety officer audits a non-domestic building, maintenance of systems like dampers can come up.
School buildings such as King Edward's School Witley are normally tested in the holidays, wherever they have dampers.
Brook is about 8 miles south-east of Farnham, in Surrey. Wherever you are in the GU8 postcode area, we can take on fire damper testing. Brook is one of 395 places in Surrey we cover for fire damper testing. Our Guildford page covers sites nearby, about 9 miles away.
Work in GU8 follows the same survey, fixed quote and written report as everywhere else we cover. Whether your site is on Brook Road, Church Lane and Park Lane or a nearby road, our technicians can take on the work. Close by, we work in Sandhills (1 mile east), Wormley (1 mile east), Bowlhead Green (1 mile west), Witley (2 miles north-east) and Hambledon (2 miles east). We also work in nearby towns such as Guildford (9 miles north-east), Woking (13 miles north), Camberley (14 miles north), Farnham (8 miles north-west), Frimley (13 miles north) and Haslemere (4 miles south-west).
Around Brook
Locally, jobs take us to businesses close to Rodborough and Dog And Pheasant Public House, among other places. The closest station to Brook is Witley station, roughly 1 mile east. Other landmarks nearby include Milford Hospital (3 miles north-east). Not far away are Gibbet Hill and Upper Lake.
For landlords and multi-site operators
If you look after several sites, we can schedule visits across all of them on one quote. Each site gets its own report and photos, so records stay tidy.
We also work for facilities teams across offices, schools and healthcare across Surrey. Work can be phased by floor, building or site around the people who use them.
Why deal with it now?
Putting testing off doesn’t change whether the dampers will close; it just means you do not know. BESA guidance is to test at least annually, so a missed year leaves a gap in the record too. Systems in rural buildings are often out of sight and out of mind.
Every site is different, so we price each one individually. Size, access, the condition of the system and when we can work all make a difference.

Signs you need fire damper testing in Brook
In most buildings, Brook included, dampers are out of sight in ceiling voids, risers and service shafts. If there’s no hatch to reach them, they slip off everyone’s list, and anything nobody can get to goes untested.
Look out for these warning signs:
- Rusted damper blades and springs
- Fire dampers that fail to drop shut
- Fire damper items raised by an assessor
- Missing or out-of-date damper records
Milford Hospital, about 3 miles north-east of Brook, is the kind of building where dampers protect every compartment; smaller care sites need the same annual tests.

Common questions in Brook
Do you work overnight in Brook?
Yes, we can come after you close and finish before you open. That way a site in Brook doesn’t have to lose a day’s trading. When you call 0345 646 2711 or send us an email, mention when the site is quiet.
Who enforces fire safety at workplaces in Brook?
Surrey Fire and Rescue Service is the fire and rescue service for Brook. A report listing every damper, its location and its result is the easiest way to show the dampers are maintained.
Who has the duty to keep fire dampers working?
The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 puts it on the responsible person. Annual testing by a competent person, with written records, is a practical way to show the duty is being met.
What accreditations do you have?
BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite membership, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, plus CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001. We’re fully insured and have been trading since 2009.
What do you do with what you remove?
We contain it and take it with us. Grease, debris and waste water are collected as the work goes on rather than letting it spread.
How far ahead should we book?
That depends on the slot you want and the size of the job. Tell us your preferred dates when you ask for a quote, and for anything urgent, ring our 24/7 emergency line.
Will we get a certificate for the dampers?
You get a test report recording every damper we tested, with its location, its result and any faults. Keep it with your fire safety records.
What information do you need?
The site address, the type of premises and your opening hours, along with a few photos and any previous report.
What a clean won’t put right
We won’t sell you work that doesn’t address the problem, so these are the things it will not cover:
- Ductwork crossing a fire wall with no damper fitted
- Designing the building’s fire compartments
- Gaps in the wall or floor around the damper
If you’re not sure, just call 0345 646 2711 or drop us a line and we will give you a straight answer before booking.
Where we work
- Fusible link fire dampers
- Motorised smoke dampers
- Offices and schools
- Riser dampers
- Wall and floor dampers
- Hospitals and care homes
The process
We turn up at the time agreed with you, which is often after service, overnight or at a weekend. Equipment that has to be off is switched off and allowed to cool first, and the area around the work is covered and protected. The work itself takes a couple of hours for a few dampers, and a day or more across a big site. We agree a date with you, plan the drive to Brook and turn up when the site is quiet.
- First we check the schedule and the last set of results.
- Each damper is found and checked for access.
- We test fire dampers by dropping them and smoke dampers by operating them through the controls.
- Passes are reset and any failures recorded with the reason.
- We report the results and offer remedials on failed dampers.
Preparing for the visit
- Name a contact who can let us in at the agreed time
- Let us know when the site is closed or quiet
- Tell us about site rules, permits or sign-in
Getting a quote
The quickest way to a quote is to send photos: wide shots of the system, close-ups of anything that worries you and how we’d get to it. Add the site type and your opening hours, and many jobs can be priced from that alone.

Aftercare tips
Looking after the system between visits is straightforward, and it makes the next visit easier:
- Update the register when ductwork changes
- Keep to at least yearly testing
- Fix water leaks in plant rooms and risers promptly
- Store test records alongside the fire risk assessment
Failed dampers are set out separately, each with the fault we found, along with an offer to repair or replace them. Once the work is done, the damper is tested again and the record updated.
Make sure every damper can be reached. Where there’s no hatch, an access panel makes testing possible before the next test.
