Fire damper testing in Broadbridge

Questions from Broadbridge

Do you work at weekends in Broadbridge?

Yes, we can come after you close and finish before you open. It means the site in Broadbridge keeps running as normal. Let us know the hours you’re closed and we’ll book within them.

Does the sea air around Broadbridge make a difference to fire damper testing?

Yes, to a degree: at about 3 miles from the coast, Broadbridge gets salt-laden air that corrodes metal faster. If corrosion is stopping a blade, the report says so and remedial work can be quoted.

Where does the waste go?

It’s contained and taken away. We collect grease, debris and waste water as we go rather than letting it spread.

What does fire damper testing cost?

There’s no set price, as it depends on the job: the size of the system, its condition, access and when we can work. You get a fixed price before we start.

What if parts of the system cannot be reached?

They’re marked on the report. In ductwork, new access panels are often the answer, which we can install.

What paperwork do we get after testing?

You get a test report recording every damper we tested, with its location, its result and any faults. Keep it with your fire safety records.

Do you have a 24/7 line?

Yes, day and night, every day of the year. Office hours are Monday to Friday, 8am to 6pm, and the emergency line covers the rest.

Which accreditations do you hold?

BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite membership, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, plus CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001. We’ve been trading since 2009 and we’re fully insured.

Fire damper testing in Broadbridge

The idea behind drop testing is straightforward: we release the blade, watch it close fully, then reset it. We test dampers for sites in Broadbridge and the rest of West Sussex, keeping a log for each damper so there’s a history to look back on. The work covers offices and schools, hospitals and care homes and riser dampers, and the jobs we see most are fire dampers with no recent test record and dampers clogged with dust or grease.

For a building in or near Broadbridge, the visit is planned ahead, with access agreed in advance, and every damper is drop tested, reset and recorded, the same as anywhere.

Good records are part of the job. Each visit is written up with pictures, listing what was done, anything we couldn’t reach and when the next visit is due. Keep it with your fire safety records so it’s to hand when an insurer or inspector asks.

Landlords, agents and facilities managers

Managing agents often deal with us directly. Tell us the site, the work and the access arrangements and we will come back with a fixed quote.

Keeping records across a portfolio is half the battle. Every visit ends with a dated report and photos, ready to show insurers, fire officers or EHOs.

Looking after it afterwards

How long the results last depends on use and care. Here’s what we suggest:

  • Act on failed dampers rather than leaving them on file
  • Warn anyone working in ceiling voids about the dampers
  • Keep an eye out for damp around dampers
  • Make sure access panels stay clear and usable

When we finish, we send a report covering every damper on the visit, with its location and its result. Keep it with the building’s fire safety records so it’s ready when your assessor or insurer asks.

Water is a damper’s enemy, so fix leaks and condensation near them promptly. Rusted parts are one of the main reasons dampers fail to close.

Broadbridge buildings and fire safety

At about 3 miles from the coast, Broadbridge is close enough for sea air to matter. Dampers close to louvres and air intakes can corrode in sea air, and a corroded blade may not drop. Going by the FSA’s register, there are about 4 schools, colleges and universities, about 9 hospitals, care homes and childcare premises and about 3 hotels and B&Bs serving food within roughly a mile and a half of the centre of Broadbridge. Buildings like these often have ducted ventilation, and wherever a duct crosses a fire-resisting wall or floor there should be a damper, tested at least once a year. West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service covers Broadbridge. When a fire safety officer audits a non-domestic building, maintenance of systems like dampers can come up.

Wherever there are offices above shops, near Bosham station or elsewhere in Broadbridge, ductwork may cross fire-resisting floors, and any dampers need testing. The nearest hospital, Chichester Centre, is about 3.3 miles east; healthcare buildings like it are a reminder that dampers protect people who can’t move quickly. For schools like Bosham Primary School, damper testing is easiest in the holidays, when corridors and ceilings are clear.

Broadbridge is about 3 miles west of Chichester, in West Sussex. From the centre of Broadbridge to the outskirts, we cover fire damper testing for every kind of premises, from small sites to large estates. Across West Sussex, we cover 371 places, Broadbridge among them. You can also see our page for Portsmouth, about 10 miles away.

We cover every part of PO18 for fire damper testing and the roads nearby. That includes premises on Station Road, Gifford Road and North Road and the roads around them. We also cover Bosham (1 mile south-west), West Ashling (1 mile north), Chidham (1 mile west), East Ashling (2 miles north) and Fishbourne (2 miles east). Further out, we also cover Bognor Regis (8 miles south-east), Chichester (3 miles east), Selsey (8 miles south), Littlehampton (14 miles east), Emsworth (4 miles west) and Rustington (15 miles east).

The process

We turn up at the time agreed with you, which is often after service, overnight or at a weekend. Equipment that has to be off is switched off and allowed to cool first, and floors and nearby surfaces are sheeted. On site, it takes a few hours for a single floor, with bigger buildings phased over more than one visit. Somewhere as small as Broadbridge, the date and timings are agreed with you well before the day.

  1. We go through the damper schedule and any previous faults.
  2. Each damper is found and checked for access.
  3. Fire dampers are drop tested, and smoke dampers are tested through their controls.
  4. Passes are reset and any failures recorded with the reason.
  5. We report the results and offer remedials on failed dampers.

Getting ready for the visit

  • Find the previous report, if there is one
  • Move anything stored near the system
  • Let us know when the site is closed or quiet

Getting a quote

Quoting starts with a diagnosis, either from photos and details you send or from a site visit. Then we send a fixed price so you know the cost before we start.

How the job changes from site to site

Fusible link fire dampers

The common fire damper uses a link that holds the blade open. When the link reaches its set temperature it melts, and the blade drops to close the duct. Testing means dropping the blade, checking the full close and resetting it.

Smoke dampers

Smoke dampers are motorised and run by a control system. Testing means operating them from the controls to confirm the blade moves all the way.

Honest limits

To be straight with you, some problems need a different fix:

  • Approving the building’s fire strategy
  • Missing dampers that a designer needs to specify
  • Fire alarm or control system faults behind a smoke damper

If in doubt, call 0345 646 2711 or use the quote form and we will say what we think before you book.

What affects the cost of fire damper testing

A fixed price needs a few facts first. We check:

  • How big the system is
  • Whether we need access equipment or extra panels
  • Site rules, permits and inductions
  • Parking and loading at the site

Whatever the type of site, the quote works the same way: how much there is, how we reach it, what state it’s in and when we can work. Ask for a fixed quote and we’ll go through it with you.

What to send for a quote

The more you tell us, the more accurate the quote. When you get in touch, it helps to send:

  • The site address and the type of premises
  • Your last certificate, test record or report
  • Wide pictures of the system and the area around it
  • The roof, plant room or outside wall the system runs to

There’s no standard price list, because no two systems are the same. Instead, we look at your site first, from photos or a survey, then send a fixed quote. To start, ring 0345 646 2711 or drop us a line.

In-house cleaning or a specialist?

Staff cleaning doesn’t replace a specialist visit; it supports it. Regular in-house cleaning slows the build-up, but the parts you cannot see still need a specialist at the right interval.

A few tasks are always specialist work: opening up ductwork, cleaning fans, drop testing fire dampers and measuring grease call for the right kit, training and safe access. Leave those to us.
