Fire damper testing in Asheridge

In a fire, ductwork can act as a shortcut for flame and smoke from one part of a building to the next. That depends entirely on the blade closing all the way. Regular drop testing is how that gets checked for the dampers in your building. If you’re dealing with motorised smoke dampers due for testing and dampers flagged on a fire risk assessment, we can help, from motorised smoke dampers, riser dampers and offices and schools onwards.

In a village or hamlet like Asheridge, there may be only a few buildings with fire dampers. Each damper still needs testing at least once a year.

The report is your system’s health record: a dated account with pictures of everything we did. Grease extract cleans are also certificated to TR19® Grease through the BESCA VHE portal and sits alongside the report.

What we do, step by step

When we arrive, we check the system against the survey or the photos you sent. Anything unexpected is raised with you before we go further. After that, the work takes a morning or an afternoon for a small number of dampers, longer where there are many. Pictures of the system and its access let us plan the work in Asheridge before we set off.

  1. We plan access and timing with you first, including any out-of-hours work.
  2. We open up ceilings and hatches and take off each access panel.
  3. We release each blade and check it shuts all the way.
  4. The damper is reset and its condition noted.
  5. We close everything up and send the results in a report.

Before we arrive

  • Name a contact who can let us in at the agreed time
  • Let us know about permits to work or site inductions
  • Allow time for equipment near the work to be turned off and cool down

Ask for a quote

Every quote begins with a look at the system, from your pictures and details or, where that isn’t enough, a survey on site. After that, you get a fixed price for the work so you know the cost before we start.

When to call us in Asheridge

Fusible links and springs do not last for ever. Damaged or painted links and weak springs mean the blade may stop short, and that only becomes clear during a drop test.

Any of these means the system needs a check-up:

  • Motorised smoke dampers due for testing
  • Rusted damper blades and springs
  • Missing or out-of-date damper records
  • Dampers that stick or will not close fully

If you manage a historic building in the area (Cholesbury Manor House is about 1.7 miles north), dampers fitted during conversions can be hard to reach and need recording.

What to look for in a quote

  • Proof of insurance
  • Whether they recommend a next date
  • If the quote is a fixed price or an estimate
  • Exactly which parts of the system are covered

Our hiring checklist

Leave it or put it right?

A damper that is stuck open gives fire and smoke a route straight through a fire-resisting wall. The rest of the compartment can be built perfectly and still be bypassed by the duct. It’s far better to find that out on a test than in a fire. Somewhere as small as Asheridge, losing a kitchen or building to a fault is felt by everyone who uses it.

The cost depends on how big the system is, the condition it’s in and how easy it is to reach. You get a fixed price before we start, so there are no surprises.

What the work covers

  • Motorised smoke dampers

  • Hospitals and care homes
  • Riser dampers

What the work involves, part by part

Access panels

A damper can only be tested if it can be reached. Most need an access panel in the duct and a hatch in the ceiling or wall.

Smoke dampers

Smoke dampers are motorised and run by a control system. We test them through their controls to confirm the blade moves all the way.

What your team can do, and what needs us

Staff cleaning doesn’t replace a specialist visit; it supports it. Clean filters and tidy surfaces slow the build-up, but the parts you can’t see still need a specialist at the right interval.

Some jobs should never be done in-house: entering ducts, working on fans, testing dampers and taking grease readings call for the right kit, training and safe access. Leave those to us.

Between visits

To keep the system working properly between visits:

  • Keep to at least yearly testing
  • Act on failed dampers rather than leaving them on file
  • Add new dampers to the register as they’re fitted
  • Keep damper test reports with the fire safety log

The next test should be no more than a year away. The guidance is at least once a year, so it helps to book it before the date slips.

Deal with leaks and condensation near dampers quickly. Corrosion is a common reason blades stick.

Common questions in Asheridge

Which fire authority looks after Asheridge?

Asheridge is in the area of Buckinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service. If a fire safety officer audits the building, they may ask for the latest damper test records.

Can a school’s dampers in Asheridge be tested out of term time?

Yes, and it’s the easiest time to do it. The FSA’s register shows about 3 schools and colleges with food registrations within roughly a mile and a half of Asheridge. Just ring 0345 646 2711 or email us with your term dates and we will plan around them.

How often does BESA say fire dampers should be tested?

According to BESA guidance, dampers should be tested when they’re installed and then at least once a year. For spring-operated dampers, once a year is the minimum.

What does TR19 mean?

TR19® is BESA’s specification for ventilation hygiene. Since 2019, TR19® Grease has been a standalone specification for grease in kitchen extract systems, and TR19® Air covers general supply and extract systems.

What happens if you cannot reach some of it?

They’re listed in the report, never skipped quietly. You will know exactly which parts weren’t reached and why, and we can quote to improve the access.

Can you look after several sites?

Yes. Tell us the addresses and what each needs and you’ll get one fixed quote.

What if a damper has no access panel?

Any damper we can’t reach is listed on the report, so you know exactly what’s outstanding. An access panel tends to solve it, and we can quote to fit one.

Do you carry out smoke damper testing?

Yes. We test smoke dampers through their control system, as they’re motor driven. Each one is checked for full travel and the result recorded.
