Extract fan cleaning in Ufton Nervet, done properly

We’ve been trading since 2009. We are a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, with CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001 and full insurance. We are often asked to deal with a heavily greased fan housing and grease around the motor and its mounts, on fan housings, roof-mounted fans and centrifugal fans.

For a kitchen in or near Ufton Nervet, the visit is planned around opening hours and the journey, and the clean covers the whole system, as it would anywhere: canopy, filters, duct, fan and discharge, with a certificate and photo report at the end.

Duct Doctor has been trading since 2009, and we are a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease. CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001 are in place too, and we carry full insurance.

The process

Your trading hours come first. We book the visit for a time the area is closed, whether that’s an evening, overnight or a weekend. When the team arrives, the work area is protected and the relevant equipment is switched off to cool, and the work takes a couple of hours per fan, depending on its size and the build-up. If the van will struggle with a lane or gateway near Ufton Nervet, let us know and we will plan around it.

  1. We start by checking where the fan sits and how to isolate it.
  2. Power to the fan is isolated before anyone touches it.
  3. We remove the grease from the blades, impeller and casing.
  4. The fan and its surrounds are degreased, keeping clear of the motor’s electrics.
  5. It’s closed up, run and checked, and photos go into your report.

Getting ready for the visit

  • Mention any sign-in, permit or induction we need
  • Find the previous report, if there is one
  • Agree a time when the area can be out of use

How the job changes from site to site

Kitchens with long cooking hours

Kitchens that cook 12 to 16 hours a day put the most grease through their fans. BESA guidance sets at least 3-monthly cleaning for that level of use, fan included.

Fan housings and motors

The housing around the impeller catches grease flung off the blades. It’s scraped and degreased with the impeller.

What a clean will not put right

Not every problem is solved by extract fan cleaning, and we’d rather say so up front. It does not solve:

  • Grease in the duct and canopy before the fan (those need a full TR19 clean)
  • A fan that is too small for the system (a design question)
  • A cracked or broken impeller (it needs replacing)

If in doubt, call us on 0345 646 2711 or use the quote form and we will say what we think before you book.

Parts of the system we cover

  • In-line fans
  • Roof-mounted fans
  • Axial fans
  • Fan housings
  • Centrifugal fans
  • Discharge points

Aftercare tips

No system stays clean for ever, but care slows the build-up. Our tips:

  • Report grease escaping from the fan
  • Note any drop in extraction at the canopy
  • Keep access to the fan clear
  • Run the extract throughout cooking

You get before and after photos of the impeller and housing. It lists what was cleaned and anything we couldn’t reach, along with the recommended next clean date.

Keep the route to the fan clear. Clear access means it’s never left out of a clean, whether it’s on a roof, in a ceiling or on a wall.

Do you need extract fan cleaning in Ufton Nervet?

Grease on a fan is a fire risk, in Ufton Nervet as anywhere. A fire in the duct can reach the fan and the grease around it, and a hot, struggling motor does not help.

It’s time to book a visit if you see:

  • A smell of hot grease from the extract
  • Rough running from the extract fan
  • Fat spreading onto the roof or wall by the fan
  • A motor area thick with grease

Bursars and site managers at schools such as Sulhamstead and Ufton Nervet School tend to book extract cleaning for when the kitchen is empty.

What to look for in a quote

  • What’s included in the scope, part by part
  • Whether they’re fully insured
  • Whether the work can be done while the site is closed
  • What happens if part of the system can’t be accessed

Questions to ask before you book

For landlords and multi-site operators

Whether it’s one building or many, the standard is the same: a survey first, a fixed quote, the work timed around the site and a report with photos.

Landlords, managing agents and facilities managers book us, not only the businesses that use the systems. Shared systems, like a riser serving several units, need a clear agreement on who books the work, and we can quote for the whole system.

Your questions about extract fan cleaning in Ufton Nervet

Do you work overnight in Ufton Nervet?

Yes. We work evenings, overnight and at weekends. Your customers, staff or residents in Ufton Nervet needn’t be disturbed. Your opening times are the first thing we ask for.

Which fire and rescue service is responsible for Ufton Nervet?

Fire safety enforcement in Ufton Nervet is handled by Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service. A recent cleaning certificate and a note of the next clean date show that grease in the extract is being managed.

What do you do to protect the area?

With sheeting and covers, before anything else happens. We keep the work contained and leave the area clean.

Can you come out in an emergency?

Yes. There’s a 24/7 emergency line, for problems that cannot wait. Call us any time and explain what’s happened.

Why is my extract fan noisy?

Build-up on the impeller is a frequent reason, because it unbalances the fan. Worn bearings and motor problems are others, which our report will flag.

What about areas you cannot get to?

They’re listed in the report, never skipped quietly. The report says which parts couldn’t be reached and why, along with a quote to put access in.

How much notice should we give?

Book as early as you can for planned work, especially if the next clean or test is due soon. Emergencies are different, because our line is open 24/7.

Do you need to turn the fan off to clean it?

With the fan isolated, the extract isn’t running. We work evenings, overnight or weekends, and the kitchen is ready when we leave.

What staff can safely do

Good housekeeping makes our visits easier, not unnecessary. Clean filters and tidy surfaces slow the build-up, but hidden parts of the system still need specialist attention.

Logging matters as much as cleaning. A simple log of filter washes, wipe-downs and checks helps show that the system is managed between specialist visits, alongside our reports.
