Extract fan cleaning in Stone

Cleaning removes grease, not wear. If we find worn bearings, a struggling motor or damage to the impeller, we’ll tell you, and we also repair and replace extract fans. You will know whether the fan just needed cleaning or something more. Common call-outs are for a fan that no longer moves enough air and an extract fan with no cleaning record, on centrifugal fans, discharge points and axial fans.

Rural kitchens often have long, low duct runs through a roof space or along an outside wall, where grease settles in the flat sections. Access, parking and timings are agreed before the day.

Duct Doctor has been trading since 2009, as a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease. We also hold CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001, and we’re fully insured.

How the visit works

There are three stages on the day: getting the area ready, doing the work and signing it off. Set-up means sheeting and making equipment safe, and the sign-off is a written report with pictures. Most of the time goes on the work itself, which takes a few hours where there are several fans or heavy deposits. If you can send photos, we can arrive in Stone knowing what to expect.

  1. First we check the fan’s condition and how it sounds.
  2. Once isolated, we open the fan up.
  3. The impeller is cleaned blade by blade so it runs balanced.
  4. We clean the casing, the outlet and around the motor.
  5. The fan goes back into service with a report on its condition.

How to prepare

  • Let us know about parking and loading
  • Make sure equipment near the work can be switched off and left to cool
  • Move anything stored near the system

FAQs for Stone

Which fire service covers Stone?

Buckinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service is the fire and rescue service for Stone. Records of extract cleaning are a sensible thing to have ready if a fire safety officer carries out an audit.

Can you get to a site in Stone?

Yes, Stone is part of our area, however small the site. Photos of the system and directions to the site help us plan the visit.

How long will it take to clean the fan?

Allow an hour or two for one fan, longer when it’s hard to reach. We’ll confirm the time when we quote.

Can you clean the fan on its own?

Yes, where it makes sense. A coated fan often means the duct before it is coated too, but the choice is yours.

What is TR19?

TR19® is BESA’s specification for ventilation hygiene. Since 2019, TR19® Grease has been a standalone specification for grease in kitchen extract systems, while TR19® Air covers other supply and extract ductwork.

Is the fan included in a TR19 clean?

Yes. TR19® Grease covers the whole system, fan included. We clean it alongside the canopy, ductwork and discharge.

What paperwork do I get after a fan clean?

A photo report shows the fan before and after. If it’s part of a full TR19 clean, a TR19 certificate is issued too.

Do you have insurance?

Yes. We’re fully insured, and we can share the details when you need them.

What extract fan cleaning looks like in Stone

The FSA’s food hygiene register shows about 3 cafés, restaurants and staff canteens within about 1.5 miles of central Stone. Any of those kitchens with a canopy relies on a fan that gathers grease as it runs. Environmental health officers from Buckinghamshire council inspect food businesses in Stone. A greasy canopy or dripping filters are the sort of thing an inspection can pick up. A TR19® certificate and photo report after each clean gives you a record to show an inspector. Stone sits within the area of Buckinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service. The Fire Safety Order puts the duty on whoever runs a kitchen to control its fire risk, and a greasy duct is fuel.

Volunteers running a hall kitchen near Church of St John the Baptist, or anywhere in Stone, may not know when the extract was last cleaned, and a grease test settles it. If you run catering at a historic house or estate in the area (Waddesdon Manor is about 4.1 miles north-west), event kitchens in older buildings often have awkward duct runs that need planning. If you run catering at a healthcare site, such as a hospital like St John's Hospital about 0.5 miles west, the extract may need cleaning more often than a part-time kitchen.

What a clean will not put right

Not every problem is solved by extract fan cleaning, and we will tell you before any work starts. It will not put right:

  • Grease in the duct and canopy before the fan (those need a full TR19 clean)
  • Electrical faults in the fan’s supply or controls (an electrician’s job)
  • An undersized fan that cannot cope

If in doubt, ring 0345 646 2711 or drop us a line and we’ll say what we think before you book.

Parts of the system we cover

How the job changes from site to site

Kitchens with long cooking hours

When a busy kitchen’s fan fails, cooking stops. A clean fan is less likely to strain, and our 24/7 emergency callout is there if it happens anyway.

Wall fans

The wall around a wall fan can be stained with grease. The outlet is checked as well as the fan.

Why act early in Stone

A fan clean in Stone doesn’t take long: the work takes a few hours where there are several fans or heavy deposits. Leaving it means more wear, more noise and a bigger clean later. A fault that closes a site in a village like Stone affects everyone who depends on it.

The cost depends on the size of the system, what state it’s in and how easy it is to reach. You get a fixed price before any work starts, so there are no surprises.

Take a look at how cleaning jobs are priced or our accreditations and certificates.

For landlords and multi-site operators

Running several sites is easier with one contractor. We work across London and the South East, so a run of sites can go into one programme and kept on a regular cycle.

Landlords, managing agents and facilities managers book us, not only the businesses that use the systems. Shared systems, like a riser serving several units, need a clear agreement on who books the work, and we can quote for the whole system.

In-house cleaning or a specialist?

Logging matters as much as cleaning. A simple log of filter washes, wipe-downs and checks shows an inspector that the system is looked after between visits, alongside our reports.

In-house cleaning and specialist cleaning do different jobs. A daily filter wipe and a weekly filter wash keep grease down at the front of the system, but they do not reach the grease that builds up further in. That part needs specialist access and equipment.

Between visits

So the system stays in good health:

  • Report grease escaping from the fan
  • Leave a clear route to the fan
  • Check filters are seated before cooking
  • Keep each photo report with the maintenance log

File the photo report with your other extract records. It shows the fan’s condition at the time of the clean, which helps if anything changes later.

Stick to the interval for the full extract. Regular full cleans keep the fan from building up heavy deposits, in line with BESA guidance.
