Extract fan cleaning in Southfields

Part by part

Kitchens with long cooking hours

When a busy kitchen’s fan fails, cooking stops. Keeping the fan clean is part of avoiding that, and our 24/7 emergency callout is there if it happens anyway.

Roof-mounted fans

On a roof, the air is cooler and grease drops out faster. We scrape and degrease the blades and casing.

If the ducts are the arteries, the fan is the heart. A heart under strain works harder for less. We clean it, run it and note anything that needs a closer look so you get a clean bill of health. We’re often asked to deal with a motor area thick with grease and grease escaping from the fan outlet, across centrifugal fans, fan housings and axial fans.

Rural kitchens often have long, low duct runs through a roof space or along an outside wall, where grease settles in the flat sections. Access, parking and timings are agreed before the day.

It’s worth checking any contractor’s accreditations. We’re a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, and we hold CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001, with full insurance on top.

Landlords, agents and facilities managers

Records are where multi-site compliance often slips. Each visit ends with a dated report and photos, ready to show insurers, fire officers or EHOs.

Whether it’s one building or many, you get the same standard: diagnosis, a fixed price, work booked around your hours and a written report with pictures.

Staff cleaning versus specialist work

If your staff spot something between visits, like drips, unusual noise, smells or damaged filters, they should report it rather than try to fix it. We can diagnose it and quote.

Day-to-day cleaning is something your team can do: wiping canopies, washing grease filters and recording it in a log. What they cannot safely do is clean inside the ductwork, the fan or the risers, and that’s where we come in.

What extract fan cleaning cannot fix

To be straight with you, some problems need a different fix:

  • A dirty duct upstream of the fan
  • A faulty speed controller or isolator
  • A motor that has burnt out

If you are not sure, just call 0345 646 2711 or email us and we’ll give you a straight answer before you book.

Where we work

  • Axial fans
  • Fan housings
  • In-line fans
  • Roof-mounted fans
  • Centrifugal fans
  • Discharge points

What we do, step by step

Protection comes first: sheeting goes over floors and surfaces close to the work. Then we make the system safe and start. The work on site takes a couple of hours per fan, depending on its size and the build-up, and the area is cleaned down before we leave. A few pictures of the system help us make the most of a visit to a place like Southfields.

  1. We start by checking where the fan sits and how to isolate it.
  2. With the fan isolated, the housing is opened.
  3. The impeller and the housing around it are scraped clean.
  4. The fan and its surrounds are degreased, keeping clear of the motor’s electrics.
  5. It’s closed up, run and checked, and photos go into your report.

Preparing for the visit

  • Plan for cooking equipment or plant to be off before we arrive
  • Have your last certificate or report to hand
  • Let us know about parking and loading

What extract fan cleaning looks like in Southfields

Sea air reaches Southfields, which sits within about 3 miles of the coast. Salt in the air is hard on rooftop fans, discharge cowls and fixings, so we check them for corrosion as well as grease. Food Standards Agency records include about 5 pubs and bars and about 3 hotels and B&Bs within roughly a mile and a half of the centre of Southfields. A pub or hotel kitchen that cooks every day builds up grease in its extract like any other. Essex County Fire and Rescue Service covers Southfields. Fire and rescue authorities enforce the Fire Safety Order in most non-domestic premises, and in a kitchen that fire risk includes the grease in the extract.

If you run catering at a healthcare site, such as a hospital like Orsett Hospital about 1.1 miles west, the extract may need cleaning more often than a part-time kitchen. Where a hall near St Giles & All Saints Church, or anywhere in Southfields, hosts lunch clubs or events, its extract gathers grease just as a café’s does. School kitchens, at schools like Orsett Church of England Primary School for example, are normally cleaned in the holidays so no lunches are lost.

Southfields is about 2 miles south-west of Stanford-le-Hope, in Thurrock. Southfields gets the same approach as every site we work on: a survey first, a fixed quote, work timed around your hours and a report with pictures. Southfields is one of 26 towns, villages and districts in Thurrock where we work for commercial clients. You can also see our page for Chelmsford, about 17 miles away.

Further out, we also cover Grays (3 miles south-west), South Ockendon (4 miles west), Corringham (3 miles east), Aveley (6 miles west), Tilbury (3 miles south) and South Stifford (4 miles west).

Local landmarks in Southfields

For rail, the closest station is Stanford-Le-Hope station, about 1.6 miles north-east of the centre. Well-known places in the area include Orsett Hospital (1.1 miles west) and Walton Hall Museum (1.2 miles south-east). Green spaces nearby include Stanford Warren.

Southfields: your questions answered

Is extract fan cleaning any different in a coastal place like Southfields?

It can. Being within about 3 miles of the sea means more corrosion on metalwork in Southfields than inland. Rooftop fans, discharge cowls and fixings are checked for corrosion as well as grease.

Can you clean school kitchen extracts in Southfields during the holidays?

Yes. Half-terms and the summer break are the natural time for school work. The FSA’s register shows about 6 schools and colleges with food registrations within roughly a mile and a half of Southfields. Booking early in the term gives the best choice of holiday dates.

What paperwork do I get after a fan clean?

Before and after photos go into a report, along with notes on the fan’s condition. A full clean adds a TR19 certificate from the BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite portal.

Do you offer maintenance contracts?

Yes. Scheduled maintenance plans are part of what we do, set at the interval the system needs. Each report recommends when the next visit should be.

Is the fan included in a TR19 clean?

Yes, the fan is cleaned as part of TR19. If a fan can’t be reached, the report says so, so you always know what was cleaned.

Do you need to turn the fan off to clean it?

It has to be off and isolated, for safety. Cleans are done when the kitchen is closed, so cooking isn’t affected.

What happens to the waste?

It’s contained and taken away. Grease, debris and waste water are collected as the work goes on, so it does not spread.

What’s TR19?

It’s BESA’s specification and the benchmark insurers, fire officers and EHOs look to. It covers how systems are inspected, cleaned and checked, and it takes a risk-based approach.

Why deal with it now?

An unbalanced fan gets worse, not better. It wears bearings and mounts and can lead to a breakdown and a kitchen cannot cook safely without extraction. A planned clean beats an emergency. A planned visit to Southfields is easier to arrange than an emergency callout.

Putting the work off seldom saves money. Build-up, wear and faults tend to get worse, not better, and a neglected system can mean more work. If you are not sure what’s needed, give us a ring on 0345 646 2711, or email photos for straight advice and a fixed quote.
