Manuden extract fan cleaning

- Thick grease on the impeller and casing
- Weak extraction at the canopy
- Fat spreading onto the roof or wall by the fan
Extract fan cleaning in Manuden
Grease on a fan is not spread evenly. Uneven build-up unbalances the impeller, which brings vibration, noise and extra wear on the bearings and motor. A thorough clean removes the cause. The work covers axial fans, discharge points and roof-mounted fans, and the jobs we see most are a noisy fan that has got louder over time and a fan shaking on its mounts.
Work in a small place like Manuden starts with a call to agree access and timings, and the clean itself is the same full TR19® job as in any town: canopy, filters, duct, fan and discharge, with a certificate and photo report at the end.
Each visit ends with a written report and pictures, so you have a record of what was done and when. Kitchen extract cleaning to TR19® Grease is certificated through the BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite portal.

Manuden: your questions answered
Can school kitchens in Manuden be cleaned in the holidays?
Yes, out-of-term visits are normal for schools. There are about 3 schools, colleges and universities on the FSA’s food hygiene register within about 1.5 miles of Manuden. Tell us your holiday dates and we will book the visit for when the site is empty.
Which fire authority looks after Manuden?
That is Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Service. TR19® is not law, but it’s the benchmark many fire officers and insurers look to when they ask how often the extract is cleaned.
Can you set up regular visits?
Yes. Plans on a 3, 6 or 12-monthly cycle are available, to suit the system and how it’s used.
What does TR19 mean?
TR19® is the BESA specification for keeping ventilation systems clean. TR19® Grease, a standalone specification since 2019, covers grease in kitchen extract systems, while TR19® Air covers other supply and extract ductwork.
What if parts of the system can’t be reached?
We never leave them off the paperwork. You’ll know exactly which parts weren’t reached and why, along with a quote to put access in.
How much does extract fan cleaning cost?
It depends on the site, so we quote each one individually. To get one, call 0345 646 2711, or send details by email with the site type, opening hours and a few pictures.
Do you repair extract fans as well as clean them?
Fan repair and replacement is part of what we do. If cleaning shows a worn motor, bearings or impeller, we will tell you and quote for the repair.
What accreditations do you have?
Duct Doctor is a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease. CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001 are in place too, and we’re fully insured.
How the job changes from site to site
Fan housings and motors
Belt-driven fans have a drive belt and pulleys that can collect grease. We clean around them and note any wear for your records.
Inline duct fans
Some fans are built into the duct itself. We get to them through the duct or casing after isolating them.

What else we do in Manuden
For landlords and multi-site operators
Keeping records across a portfolio is half the battle. Each visit produces a dated report with pictures, ready to show insurers, fire officers or EHOs.
We regularly work with managing agents. Tell us the site, the work and the access arrangements and we will come back with a fixed quote.
In-house cleaning or a specialist?
Good housekeeping makes our visits easier, not unnecessary. Clean filters and tidy surfaces slow the build-up, but hidden parts of the system still need specialist attention.
Day-to-day cleaning is something your team can do: wiping canopies, washing grease filters and recording it in a log. What they can’t safely do is clean inside the ductwork, the fan or the risers, and that’s where we come in.
Looking after it afterwards
Here’s the after-treatment advice, short and simple:
- Never cook with a filter missing
- Report rattles or humming early
- Leave a clear route to the fan
- Tell us if the extract feels weaker
If the fan needs more than a clean, we will say so plainly. Fan repair and replacement are services we offer too, so you have one point of contact.
Stick to the interval for the full extract. Regular full cleans keep the fan from building up heavy deposits, in line with BESA guidance.
What affects the quote in Manuden
Every site gets its own quote. These are the things that affect it:
- Any permits to work or inductions
- A single visit or a regular plan
- How many systems or sites are involved
- The size of the system
Combining work into one visit or one programme often makes better use of the time. Mention every system or site you need covered and we’ll price it together.
Helping us quote
To speed up the quote, send us:
- Detail shots of panels, filters and grilles
- Your last certificate, test record or report
- The site address and the type of premises
- The roof, plant room or outside wall the system runs to
For a fixed quote, ring 0345 646 2711 or use the quote form with the site type, your trading hours and a short description of the system. Photos and the last report, if you have one, make the quote quicker. We normally come back within one working day.
The process
Protection comes first: sheeting goes over floors and surfaces close to the work. After that, the system is made safe and the work begins. The work on site takes an hour or two for most single fans, and the area is cleaned down before we leave. Seeing the system in photos first means the trip to Manuden can be planned properly.
- First we locate the fan and agree how it’s safely isolated.
- With the fan isolated, the housing is opened.
- We remove the grease from the blades, impeller and casing.
- The fan and its surrounds are degreased, keeping clear of the motor’s electrics.
- It’s closed up, run and checked, and photos go into your report.
Before we arrive
- Clear the space around the work
- Tell us about access, such as roof hatches, plant rooms, ceilings or locked areas
- Mention any parking or loading restrictions
How to get a quote
Getting a quote does not take long. Call or email with a few details and you will typically have a fixed price within one working day. Where a survey is needed, we arrange a time that suits the site.
