Extract fan cleaning for kitchens and businesses in Hertford
Duct Doctor has been cleaning kitchen extract fans since 2009. We’re a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, with CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001 and full insurance. We’re often asked to deal with burning smells from the fan area and an extract fan with no cleaning record, on fan housings, axial fans and in-line fans.
Kitchens in towns like Hertford are often in older buildings that were never designed for them, so duct runs can be awkward, with bends, long horizontal sections and too few access panels. Where the duct can’t be reached, new panels can be fitted, and anything left uncleaned is recorded on the report.
We have been trading since 2009, as a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease. We also hold CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001, and we are fully insured.

Multi-site and managed buildings
For anyone managing more than one site, we can plan visits across the whole estate and price them together. Every building has its own written report, so records stay tidy.
We regularly work with managing agents. Tell us the site, the work and the access arrangements and we’ll come back with a fixed quote.
Part by part
Impellers and blades
Coated blades move less air. We clean each blade back to its surface, so the fan can run as intended.
Inline duct fans
Inline fans sit within the duct run, often above a ceiling. We get to them through the duct or casing after isolating them.

Hertford questions
Do you work overnight in Hertford?
Yes, we can come after you close and finish before you open. The work in Hertford can fit around your hours. Tell us your opening hours when you ask for a quote.
Can school kitchens in Hertford be cleaned in the holidays?
Yes, holiday work suits schools best. There are about 22 schools, colleges and universities on the FSA’s food hygiene register within about 1.5 miles of Hertford. Send us your term dates when you ring 0345 646 2711 or use the quote form, and we’ll fit the work in.
Can you set up regular visits?
Yes. We run scheduled maintenance contracts, with visits at the interval your system needs. The report from each visit recommends the next date.
Can the fan be cleaned between full cleans?
Yes, a fan can be cleaned on its own. It’s useful when a fan is noisy or greasy between full cleans, but it doesn’t replace a full TR19 clean.
What information do you need?
Some photos and a quick description of the system plus the address and your hours. If we need more, we’ll ask.
Do you cover Hertford?
Yes. We cover Hertford and the rest of Hertfordshire, as part of our work across South East England and London. For a fixed quote, ring 0345 646 2711 or use the quote form.
How much notice do you need?
The more notice, the better, particularly for night and weekend visits. We normally quote within one working day, and there’s a 24/7 line for emergencies.
Why has my extract fan got louder?
Grease on the blades and housing is one of the usual causes, because it unbalances the fan. Worn bearings and motor problems are others, which our report will flag.
What extract fan cleaning looks like in Hertford
Food Standards Agency data counts about 62 cafés, restaurants and staff canteens and about 20 takeaways within roughly a mile and a half of the centre of Hertford. Any of those kitchens with a canopy relies on a fan that gathers grease as it runs. It’s East Hertfordshire council that sends environmental health officers to food businesses in Hertford. An officer looking round a kitchen will see the canopy, and grease there is hard to miss. Our report lists what was cleaned and when, which is useful to have ready. Hertford sits within the area of Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Service. In most workplaces, including commercial kitchens, it’s the fire and rescue authority that enforces the Fire Safety Order.
If you cook for passing trade around Hertford East station, the extract can be cleaned between your last and first customer. Healthcare kitchens, like those at hospitals such as Hertford County Hospital (about less than half a mile south-west), often cook for long hours, which puts them in BESA’s heavier-use bands. Volunteers running a hall kitchen near Hertford United Reform Church, or anywhere in Hertford, may not know when the extract was last cleaned, and a grease test settles it.

What happens on the day
A visit follows the same order every time: sheeting and protection first, make the system safe, do the work, clear away and leave you the report. On site, the work takes an hour or two for most single fans. In Hertford, the visit is planned around your opening hours, parking and access to the system.
- First we check the fan’s condition and how it sounds.
- Once isolated, we open the fan up.
- The impeller is cleaned blade by blade so it runs balanced.
- Housing, outlet and the area around the motor are cleaned.
- The fan goes back into service with a report on its condition.
Preparing for the visit
- Mention any parking or loading restrictions
- Mention any sign-in, permit or induction we need
- Tell us the best time to work, such as after service or at a weekend
Getting a quote
Getting a quote does not take long. Send a few details and pictures, and we usually reply with a fixed quote within one working day. Where a survey is needed, we arrange a time that suits the site.

When something else is needed
A few issues sit outside what this work can do:
- A faulty speed controller or isolator
- A cracked or broken impeller (it needs replacing)
- A fan that was never right for the kitchen
If you’re not sure, just call us on 0345 646 2711 or send us an email and we’ll give you a straight answer.

How we price extract fan cleaning
Before we fix a price, we need to know a few things. We look at:
- Where the site is and how we reach it
- One-off work versus a regular cycle
- Working hours and out-of-hours timing
- Site requirements such as sign-in and permits
The price reflects the work, not guesswork. That is why we survey first, from photos or on site, and the price is agreed before we start.
What we need to know
There’s no need for technical detail. Just send:
- Where the site is and what kind of site it is
- Wide photos of the system and the area around it
- Anything you’ve noticed, such as smells, noise, drips or poor airflow
- When the site is open and when it’s quiet
The quickest way to a quote is to send photos: the system from a couple of angles, plus any access panels or hatches. Add the site type and your opening hours, and we can price many jobs without a visit.
Staff cleaning versus specialist work
Away from the kitchen, the in-house job is mainly checking: keeping grilles clear, noting unusual noise or smells and logging filter changes. Cleaning inside ducts and units is specialist work.
Logging matters as much as cleaning. A dated log of in-house cleaning and checks shows an inspector that the system is looked after between visits, next to our reports.
Between visits
Good habits slow the build-up between visits. A few tips:
- Flag smoke lingering at the canopy
- Look for grease stains near the discharge
- Check the report shows the fan was cleaned
- Keep the fan on whenever the range is lit
Keep the report with the maintenance log and fire risk assessment. It gives a dated record of the fan’s condition, which helps if anything changes later.
Listen to the fan. Rattles, hums or shaking can be early signs of build-up or wear and early action can save a repair.
