Aftercare tips

Aftercare is simple, and it makes the next visit easier:

  • Don’t store items in front of the fan’s access point
  • Notice when the fan starts to sound different
  • Keep each photo report with the maintenance log
  • Flag smoke lingering at the canopy

The area around the fan is left clean, with waste grease removed. On a roof or outside wall, we leave the surrounding area tidy.

The fan stays cleaner when less grease gets past the canopy. Clean, well-seated filters are the fan’s first protection, and replace any that are damaged.

About our extract fan cleaning in Fir Toll

Duct Doctor has been cleaning kitchen extract fans since 2009. As a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, we clean to BESA TR19® Grease, and we are fully insured, with CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001. The work covers centrifugal fans, discharge points and in-line fans, and the jobs we see most are an extract fan with no cleaning record and a heavily greased fan housing.

Somewhere as small as Fir Toll, commercial kitchens are few: perhaps a pub, a school or care home kitchen, or a hall used for events. Each still has a canopy and duct that collect grease, whatever the size of the place.

Accreditations are easy to claim and worth checking. We are a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, and we hold CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001, and we’re fully insured.

How the job changes from site to site

Inline duct fans

Space around an inline fan can be tight, so the method is planned in advance. Anything out of reach is recorded.

Wall fans

With little duct before them, wall fans collect grease fast. They may need cleaning as often as the canopy, which grease readings will show.

How we price extract fan cleaning

The survey tells us what the work involves. The main factors are:

  • The condition we find in the survey
  • How many systems or sites are involved
  • Where the site is and how we reach it
  • A single visit or a regular plan

When the work has to happen, how we reach it and how big the site is can all change the price. Each of those is built into the quote, and the price is fixed before any work starts.

What we need to know

We can often survey from pictures. The most useful are:

  • When the site is open and when it’s quiet
  • The site address and the type of premises
  • Anything you’ve noticed, such as smells, noise, drips or poor airflow
  • The roof, plant room or outside wall the system runs to

We do not publish a price list, because every site is different. Instead, we look at your site first, from photos or a survey, then send a fixed quote. To get going, phone us on 0345 646 2711, or email photos.

For landlords and multi-site operators

If you look after several sites, we can plan visits across the whole estate and price them together. Each site gets its own report and photos, so each one has its own record.

Where a tenant occupies the premises but the landlord owns the building, it’s worth checking the lease for who maintains the systems. We are happy to deal with either side, and the report can go to both.

When to call us in Fir Toll

Fans that are hard to reach are often the ones that get missed. A fan that has never been cleaned can be heavily coated, and the report will show it.

Look out for these warning signs:

  • Burning smells from the fan area
  • A fan left out of previous cleans
  • A fan shaking on its mounts
  • Grease around the motor and its mounts

Godinton House, about 3.6 miles east, is one of the historic houses near Fir Toll; if you run event catering at a venue like that, cleans can be booked between functions.

What to look for in a quote

  • If they look at the system before pricing
  • Whether VAT is included
  • What happens if part of the system can’t be accessed
  • When they can work, and whether that is outside your opening hours

Questions to ask before you book

What a clean won’t put right

We’d rather tell you now than book work that will not help, so here are the limits:

  • A failed motor or worn bearings (that needs a fan repair or replacement)
  • Damaged fan blades
  • Grease in the canopy and ductwork

If in doubt, call us on 0345 646 2711 or use the quote form and we will say what we think.

Parts of the system we cover

  • In-line fans
  • Axial fans
  • Centrifugal fans
  • Discharge points
  • Roof-mounted fans
  • Fan housings

How the visit works

A visit follows the same order every time: sheeting and protection first, isolate whatever needs isolating, do the work, tidy up and leave you the report. The visit itself takes a couple of hours per fan, depending on its size and the build-up. Somewhere like Fir Toll, lanes, gates and parking are worth mentioning in advance.

  1. We start by checking where the fan sits and how to isolate it.
  2. The fan is isolated so it can’t start while we work.
  3. We remove the grease from the blades, impeller and casing.
  4. We degrease the fan and housing, taking care around the motor.
  5. It’s closed up, run and checked, and photos go into your report.

Preparing for the visit

  • Dig out any earlier paperwork for the system
  • Plan for cooking equipment or plant to be off before we arrive
  • Let us know about permits to work or site inductions

Getting a quote

Photos are enough for some jobs, while others need a look on site. Larger sites, and anything hidden behind walls, ceilings or floors, are normally surveyed first. Either way, you get a fixed price before we start.

Commercial premises of every kind: kitchens, offices, schools, healthcare, retail, leisure and food production. We fit the work around how the site operates.

A BESA specification, with two parts that matter most here: TR19® Grease for kitchen extract systems and TR19® Air for general ventilation. It isn’t law, but it’s the benchmark.

Fir Toll kitchens: local notes

According to Food Standards Agency records, there are about 4 pubs, bars and clubs within about 1.5 miles of central Fir Toll. Where they serve hot food, their kitchen extracts need cleaning to TR19® like any restaurant’s. Kent Fire and Rescue Service covers Fir Toll. The Fire Safety Order puts the duty on whoever runs a kitchen to control its fire risk, and a greasy duct is fuel. It’s Ashford council that sends environmental health officers to food businesses in Fir Toll. They look at how clean the premises and equipment are, and the kitchen extract is part of that. Keeping each certificate and photo report on file helps show the extract is looked after.

Where a hall near Church of St Nicholas, or anywhere in Fir Toll, hosts lunch clubs or events, its extract gathers grease just as a café’s does. Term dates shape school work: for a school like Pluckley Church of England Primary School, an extract clean fits neatly into a half-term or summer break.
