Ductwork cleaning for sites in Windmill Hill

What ductwork cleaning looks like in Windmill Hill

Sea air reaches Windmill Hill, which sits within about 2 miles of the coast. Near the sea, the fan and discharge at the top of a kitchen extract corrode faster than they would inland. According to Food Standards Agency records, there are about 57 bars, pubs and nightclubs within about 1.5 miles of central Windmill Hill. Wherever they cook, the canopy, duct and fan collect grease just as a restaurant’s do. Environmental health officers from Gravesham council inspect food businesses in Windmill Hill. The cleanliness of the kitchen and its equipment, extraction included, is part of what they check. Our report lists what was cleaned and when, which is useful to have ready.

If you run catering at a healthcare site, such as a hospital like Gravesham Community Hospital about 0.6 miles north-west, the extract may need cleaning more often than a part-time kitchen. If you look after a school kitchen, at a school such as Wrotham Road Primary School or anywhere near Windmill Hill, the holidays are the usual time for a TR19® clean. For kitchens close to Gravesend station, where the day often starts early and ends late, the extract can be cleaned overnight.

How we handle ductwork cleaning in Windmill Hill

Duct Doctor has cleaned kitchen extract ductwork since 2009, working across London and the South East. We are a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, and our certificates are issued through the BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite portal. The work covers attenuators, multi-storey ducts and vertical risers, and people most often call us about ductwork that has never been cleaned and duct runs that can’t be reached.

Around a smaller place like Windmill Hill, kitchen extracts tend to belong to pubs, cafés, takeaways and school or care home kitchens. Quieter kitchens still collect grease in the duct, just more slowly, so cleaning is planned around how much it cooks and what the readings show.

Our accreditations include CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001, and we are fully insured. On top of that, we’re a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, and we’ve been trading since 2009.

Why deal with it now?

There’s no law that names TR19. The Fire Safety Order 2005 makes the responsible person assess and reduce fire risk, including the grease inside the extract ductwork. It’s easy to lose track of when the work was last done on a quieter site.

Every site is different, so we price each one individually. Size, access, the condition of the system and when we can work all make a difference.

What your team can do, and what needs us

Your own staff can handle the daily basics: wiping canopies, washing grease filters and recording it in a log. What they can’t safely do is clean inside the ductwork, the fan or the risers, which is where we come in.

Away from the kitchen, the in-house job is mainly checking: keeping grilles clear, noting unusual noise or smells and logging filter changes. Cleaning inside ducts and units is specialist work.

What the work involves, part by part

Bends and transitions

A bend can hold far more grease than a straight run of the same length. We clean it back by hand and with degreaser, and test it before and after.

Vertical risers

Risers are cleaned through panels at different levels. Where it can’t be reached safely, the report says so.

Fixed quotes for ductwork cleaning in Windmill Hill

The price is fixed before any work begins. It’s based on:

  • Site rules, permits and inductions
  • The size of the system
  • Travel, parking and unloading
  • The number of sites or systems

A single site or a whole portfolio, we price it on the same basis: the work involved, the access and the timing. You’ll have a fixed price before any work starts.

Asking for a quote

The more you tell us, the more accurate the quote. When you get in touch, it helps to send:

  • Any previous report or certificate
  • Close-ups of filters, grilles, hatches or access panels
  • The site address and the type of premises
  • Photos showing the whole system and its surroundings

Here’s what helps us quote: where the site is, what it is and its opening hours, pictures of the system and any previous report or certificate. Then phone us on 0345 646 2711 or email us.

How the visit works

Protection comes first: floors, worktops and anything near the work are covered. Then we make the system safe and start. It takes a shift or more, depending on the length of the runs and the number of access points, and we clear up before we go. For a site near Windmill Hill, the work is booked around your opening hours, evenings and weekends included.

  1. Diagnosis: a survey of the duct’s route, size and access.
  2. You get a fixed price before work starts.
  3. We clean section by section, working from panel to panel.
  4. We take extra care at bends and at the foot of risers.
  5. Readings, pictures and a recommended next clean date complete the job.

Preparing for the visit

  • Let us know how we reach the system, including roofs, risers and plant rooms
  • Let us know about permits to work or site inductions
  • Clear the space around the work

How to get a quote

Photos are enough for some jobs, while others need a look on site. Larger sites, and anything hidden behind walls, ceilings or floors, are normally surveyed first. Either way, you get a fixed price before we start.

Windmill Hill questions

Can school kitchens in Windmill Hill be cleaned in the holidays?

Yes. The holidays are the usual time for school work. The FSA’s register shows about 35 schools and colleges with food registrations within roughly a mile and a half of Windmill Hill. Booking early in the term gives the best choice of holiday dates.

Is ductwork cleaning any different in a coastal place like Windmill Hill?

It can, as Windmill Hill is within about 2 miles of the sea, where salt in the air is hard on metal. Rooftop fans, discharge cowls and fixings are checked for corrosion as well as grease.

Can you come out in an emergency?

Yes. Our emergency line runs 24/7 for anything that can’t wait until a planned visit. Ring any time and tell us what’s happened.

What if part of the duct can’t be reached?

Without a way in, a section can’t be cleaned properly. We record those sections on the report and can fit access panels.

How much notice do you need?

That depends on the slot you want and the size of the job. Mention your preferred dates with your enquiry, and if it’s an emergency, call us any time.

What does TR19 mean?

TR19® is the BESA specification for keeping ventilation systems clean. Since 2019, TR19® Grease has been a standalone specification for grease in kitchen extract systems, while TR19® Air covers other supply and extract ductwork.

Is there a survey before the work?

Yes. We always survey first, from your photos and details, or with a visit where necessary. A fixed quote follows.

How do you keep the site clean during the work?

We cover floors and nearby surfaces with sheeting before work begins, and waste is contained as we go. Before we leave, we tidy up and clean down.

Aftercare tips

Results last longer with the right care. Here’s what we suggest:

  • Book the next clean before the recommended date
  • Keep your cleaning records together
  • Never cook with a filter missing
  • Do not block access panels with shelving or stock

Access panels are closed and sealed back up after cleaning, and the surrounding area is left clean. Waste grease and water are taken away.

Keep the fan on throughout service. When the air stops, grease settles in the duct, so switching off early adds to the build-up.
