Ductwork cleaning in Wimbledon
Duct cleaning is the hardest part of an extract clean, and the part most often skipped. Sections with no way in can go uncleaned for years. Each section we can reach is cleaned, and any we can’t is written down, so you know exactly where you stand. The work covers attenuators, multi-storey ducts and bends and junctions, and people most often call us about ductwork that has never been cleaned and grease pooling at the foot of the riser.
Kitchens in Wimbledon, like many across London, can share a building with flats or offices, with the duct running up through shared risers. Grease in a duct like that is a fire risk to the whole building, not just the kitchen, which is why keeping it clean to TR19® matters.
A written report with photos follows each visit, so you have a record of what was done and when. Where the work is a TR19® Grease clean, the certificate is issued through the BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite portal.

Common problems we fix in Wimbledon
Many ducts do not have enough access panels. Sections between panels go uncleaned, sometimes since the system was installed, and grease there keeps thickening unseen.
If you notice any of these, it’s worth a diagnosis:
- Heavy grease at the base of a riser
- Stale grease odours from the duct
- Duct runs with no cleaning record
- Duct runs that can’t be reached
School kitchens, at schools like Wimbledon High School for example, are normally cleaned in the holidays so no lunches are lost.
Questions to ask before you book
- What paperwork you get at the end
- Whether inaccessible sections are listed on the report
- Proof of accreditation you can verify
- Whether the figure could change on the day

Grease, kitchens and Wimbledon
Food Standards Agency records list about 282 restaurants, cafés and canteens and about 52 takeaways and sandwich shops within about 1.5 miles of central Wimbledon. Behind every canopy among them is a run of ductwork that collects grease out of sight. Most London extract cleaning happens at night, after the last service. Wimbledon is covered by London Fire Brigade. In most workplaces, including commercial kitchens, it’s the fire and rescue authority that enforces the Fire Safety Order.
Healthcare kitchens cannot easily close, so their extracts are cleaned overnight or between meal services; the nearest hospital to Wimbledon is Atkinson Morley Hospital, about 1.2 miles west. A hall kitchen that only cooks for events, whether near St. Mark's Church or elsewhere in Wimbledon, still needs its extract cleaned, just less often.
Wimbledon is about 7 miles south of City of Westminster, in Greater London. Wimbledon gets the same approach as every site we work on: a survey first, a fixed quote, work timed around your hours and a report with pictures. We cover 764 places across Greater London, large and small. We also work in London, around 7 miles away.
All of SW19, SW20, SW17 and SW18 is within our area for ductwork cleaning, from the main roads to the quietest streets. If you need ductwork cleaning at premises on High Street Mews, High Street and Church Road or a nearby road, we can help. Main roads around Wimbledon include the A218 and B235, which makes travel easy for evening and night visits. If your site is just outside Wimbledon, we cover Crooked Billet (1 mile west), Wimbledon Park (1 mile north), Wimbledon Chase (1 mile south), Copse Hill (1 mile south-west) and Merton Park (1 mile south-east). We also work in nearby towns such as London (7 miles north-east), City of Westminster (7 miles north), Marylebone (7 miles north-east), Kensington (5 miles north), St Pancras (8 miles north-east) and Shoreditch (9 miles north-east).
Around Wimbledon
We work in commercial kitchens and buildings around Willington School, Dog & Fox pub and Cannizaro Park and the streets around them. Wimbledon has its own railway station: Wimbledon station. Well-known places in the area include Atkinson Morley Hospital (1.2 miles west) and Wimbledon Museum (less than half a mile west). Green spaces nearby include Battersea Park Lake and Merton Park Green Walks.
Different parts, different methods
Vertical risers
Risers often pass through floors and walls, where fire dampers may be fitted. Damper testing is a separate service.
Attenuators and discharge
At the end of the duct is the discharge. It can gather grease and mark the wall or roof around it, so it’s cleaned as far as safe access allows.
How the visit works
The visit has three parts: set-up, the treatment itself and the sign-off. Set-up means sheeting and making equipment safe, and the sign-off is a written report with photos. The middle part takes longest, which takes a few hours for a short run, longer for long runs and tall risers. Getting kit into a London building takes planning, so let us know where we can load and park in Wimbledon.
- We trace the duct and find every way in.
- We take grease readings along the route.
- Once the kitchen has closed, we protect the area and open the panels.
- Thick grease is scraped out, then the runs and risers are degreased.
- Panels are closed, readings and pictures repeated, and unreachable sections recorded.
Getting ready for the visit
- Move anything stored near the system
- Mention any parking or loading restrictions
- Tell us the best time to work, such as after service or at a weekend
Getting a quote
We do not publish a price list, because every site is different. We look at your system first, from photos or on a visit, and then send you a fixed quote. To start, call us on 0345 646 2711, or email photos.
Advice
What your team can do, and what needs us
Day-to-day cleaning is something your team can do: wiping canopies, washing grease filters and recording it in a log. Inside the ducts, risers and fan is specialist work, which is where we come in.
Good housekeeping makes our visits easier, not unnecessary. Regular in-house cleaning slows the build-up, but the parts you can’t see still need a specialist at the right interval.
Why deal with it now?
There’s no law that names TR19. The Fire Safety Order 2005 makes the responsible person assess and reduce fire risk, including the grease inside the extract ductwork. A busy site in Wimbledon builds up dirt and wear quickly, so putting it off makes the eventual job larger.
The price reflects the work, not guesswork. That is why we survey first, from pictures or on site, and the price is agreed before we start.
Why us?

- Every job surveyed first
- Fully insured

Keeping the system healthy
Good habits slow the build-up between visits. Our tips:
- File each certificate and photo report in the maintenance log
- Get panels fitted where the duct couldn’t be cleaned
- Report any grease dripping from duct joints
- Make sure filters are seated properly
Keep the certificate and report with the fire risk assessment. An insurer, fire officer or EHO may ask to see it, and the pictures make the duct’s condition easy to see.
Grease that never reaches the duct never needs cleaning out of it. Clean, properly seated filters are the duct’s best protection.
What affects the cost of ductwork cleaning
Some jobs are bigger than they look, and some smaller. The main factors:
- The size of the system
- The number of sites or systems
- Access, including roofs, risers and ceiling voids
- Whether it’s a one-off visit or part of a schedule
What you pay depends on how big the system is, the condition it’s in and access to every part of it. We give you a fixed price before any work starts, so there are no surprises.
Helping us quote
We can often survey from pictures. Try to include:
- The times we could work without disrupting the site
- The site address and the type of premises
- How we’d reach plant on a roof or in a plant room
- Problems your staff have spotted
Some systems can be priced from photos; others need a survey. Larger sites, and anything hidden behind walls, ceilings or floors, are normally surveyed first. Either way, the quote is fixed before any work is booked.
Common questions in Wimbledon
Which fire service covers Wimbledon?
London Fire Brigade is the fire and rescue service for Wimbledon. If a fire safety officer visits a commercial kitchen, they may ask about the fire risk assessment and how the extract is kept clean.
Who carries out food hygiene inspections in Wimbledon?
Food hygiene inspections in Wimbledon are carried out by Merton council. An officer may look up into the canopy, so clean filters on the day and a recent certificate on file both help.
How can I tell if my extract ducts are dirty?
Start with the date of the last clean. If it’s overdue, or there is not one, a clean is due, and grease readings will confirm how urgent it is.
What happens if there are not enough access panels?
We clean everything we can reach and record what we can’t. Fitting extra access panels is the usual answer, and we can do that for you.
Do you offer maintenance contracts?
Yes. Regular plans can run on 3, 6 or 12-monthly cycles, to suit the system and how it’s used.
What’s TR19?
TR19® is the BESA specification for keeping ventilation systems clean. Since 2019, TR19® Grease has been a standalone specification for grease in kitchen extract systems, and TR19® Air covers general supply and extract systems.
What do you need from me for a quote?
Only a few details: the address, the site type, your opening hours and how we reach the system. Photos and any previous paperwork make it quicker. After that, simply phone us on 0345 646 2711 or drop us a line.
What do you do with what you remove?
We take it away when we go. While we work, it’s kept contained so the area stays clean.
