What affects the quote in Whitchurch-on-Thames

The quote reflects the site in front of us. We consider:

  • Whether it’s a one-off visit or part of a schedule
  • Site requirements such as sign-in and permits
  • The times the site is available
  • The size of the system

No two sites are the same, so each one gets its own fixed quote. The size of the job, how we reach it, its condition and the working hours all make a difference.

What we need to know

There’s no need for technical detail. Just send:

  • The site address and the type of premises
  • Any symptoms, from odd noises to smells or leaks
  • Any previous report or certificate
  • How we’d reach plant on a roof or in a plant room

For a fixed quote, call us on 0345 646 2711 or use the quote form and tell us the type of site, your opening hours and roughly what the system looks like. A few photos and your last certificate or report help a lot. You will typically have a quote within one working day.

Ductwork cleaning in Whitchurch-on-Thames, done properly

Many ducts were installed with too few access doors. TR19 calls for any section we couldn’t reach to be recorded, and we can fit new access panels so it’s cleaned next time. An honest report beats a guess. Common call-outs are for heavy grease at the base of a riser and sections of duct with no access panels, on multi-storey ducts, horizontal duct runs and attenuators.

Somewhere as small as Whitchurch-on-Thames, commercial kitchens are few: perhaps a pub, a school or care home kitchen, or a hall used for events. Every one of them still needs its extract kept clear of grease.

The sign-off is always in writing: a written report, dated and illustrated with pictures, and for TR19® Grease cleans, a certificate issued through the BESCA VHE portal. Any parts we couldn’t reach are recorded on it too.

Keeping the system healthy

To keep the system working properly between visits:

  • Keep access panels clear of stored items
  • Ask for a grease thickness test if the kitchen gets busier
  • Diarise the next duct clean
  • Get panels fitted where the duct couldn’t be cleaned

When the duct is cleaned as part of a full TR19® Grease clean, a TR19 certificate is issued through the BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite portal. It records the date, the location and the technician.

Watch for warning signs between cleans: drips from the ductwork, stale smells or a noisy fan. A grease thickness test can confirm whether a spot clean is needed.

What ductwork cleaning cannot fix

Not every problem is solved by ductwork cleaning, and we will tell you before work begins. It doesn’t solve:

  • Duct sealed behind fixed ceilings or walls
  • A duct that is too small or badly routed for the kitchen (a design issue)
  • Ductwork that is corroded, split or holed (that needs a ductwork contractor)

If you are not sure, just ring 0345 646 2711, or send details by email and we’ll give you a straight answer before booking.

Kitchen extracts in Whitchurch-on-Thames

According to Food Standards Agency records, there are about 3 pubs, bars and clubs within 1.5 miles or so of the middle of Whitchurch-on-Thames. Wherever they cook, the canopy, duct and fan collect grease just as a restaurant’s do. Whitchurch-on-Thames sits within the area of Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue Service. Its fire safety officers can audit commercial kitchens, and grease in the extract is part of a kitchen’s fire risk. In Whitchurch-on-Thames, food businesses are inspected by environmental health officers from South Oxfordshire council. An officer looking round a kitchen will see the canopy, and grease there is hard to miss. A TR19® certificate and photo report after each clean gives you a record to show an inspector.

If you look after a school kitchen, at a school such as Whitchurch Primary School or anywhere near Whitchurch-on-Thames, the holidays are the usual time for a TR19® clean. Leave it or put it right?

There’s no law that names TR19. Under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, the responsible person must assess and reduce fire risk, including the grease inside the extract ductwork. Our emergency line runs 24/7, but a planned visit to Whitchurch-on-Thames is calmer for everyone.

Your questions about ductwork cleaning in Whitchurch-on-Thames

Which fire authority looks after Whitchurch-on-Thames?

Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue Service is the fire and rescue service for Whitchurch-on-Thames. TR19® isn’t law, but it’s the benchmark many fire officers and insurers look to when they ask how often the extract is cleaned.

Do you cover smaller places like Whitchurch-on-Thames?

Yes. Villages and rural sites across the South East are part of our work, Whitchurch-on-Thames included. A survey first, from photos or a visit, means we arrive with the right kit.

How much notice should we give?

Book as early as you can for planned work, especially if the next clean or test is due soon. Emergencies are different, because our line is open 24/7.

What happens to the waste?

We take it away at the end of the visit. While we work, it’s kept contained to keep the area clean.

How is kitchen extract ductwork cleaned?

We open each access panel and clean the section it reaches. Heavy grease comes out by hand, and what’s left is degreased, with readings taken before and after.

Do you offer emergency callouts?

Yes, day and night, every day of the year. Office hours are Monday to Friday, 8am to 6pm, with the emergency line covering every other hour.

Which accreditations do you hold?

BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite membership, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, plus CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001. We have been trading since 2009 and we’re fully insured.

Can you fit access panels in our ductwork?

Yes, as part of our fits and repairs work. Panels go where they give the best access to sections that couldn’t be reached, and we will recommend where.

The process

Your trading hours come first. We book the visit for a time the area is closed, whether that’s an evening, overnight or a weekend. When the team arrives, the work area is protected and the relevant equipment is switched off to cool, and the work takes anything from a few hours to several visits, depending on the length of duct. Pictures of the system and its access let us plan the work in Whitchurch-on-Thames before we set off.

  1. The duct route is surveyed and every access point found.
  2. Grease thickness is measured at set points.
  3. Out of hours, the area is protected and the access panels opened.
  4. Thick grease is scraped out, then the runs and risers are degreased.
  5. We close up, re-test, photograph and record anything out of reach.

Preparing for the visit

  • Arrange a key holder or contact on site
  • Tell us about access, such as roof hatches, plant rooms, ceilings or locked areas
  • Move anything stored near the system

How to get a quote

Some systems can be priced from photos; others need a survey. Larger sites, and anything hidden behind walls, ceilings or floors, are normally surveyed first. Either way, the quote is fixed before any work is booked.

Advice

Common problems we fix in Whitchurch-on-Thames

A vertical riser can run up several floors. Grease collects on the riser walls and gathers at the bottom, where it can pool. Access along its height is needed to clean it properly.

If you notice any of these, it’s worth a diagnosis:

  • Hardened, baked-on grease in long horizontal runs
  • High readings at a recent grease test
  • A duct nobody has opened in years
  • Duct runs that can’t be reached

If you cook for passing trade around Pangbourne station, the extract can be cleaned between your last and first customer.

Questions to ask before you book

  • How they set the interval to the next visit
  • Whether they’re fully insured
  • Their accreditations, such as BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite, CHAS or SafeContractor
  • Whether a survey comes first
