Ductwork cleaning in Upshire

Many ducts were installed with too few access doors. Where a section can’t be reached, TR19 expects it to be recorded on the report, and new panels can be fitted to reach it in future. An honest report beats a guess. The work covers attenuators, horizontal duct runs and bends and junctions, and common reasons people get in touch are duct runs that can’t be reached and smells of old cooking grease from the ductwork.

In a village or hamlet like Upshire, the kitchens that need extract cleaning are usually a pub, a school, a care home or a hall kitchen, wherever there is one. Each still has a canopy and duct that collect grease.

For insurers and inspectors, the record counts. That’s why every job is written up in a report with pictures, plus a TR19® certificate through the BESCA VHE portal where the work is a TR19® Grease clean.

The process

We work around your opening hours, not the other way round. Most visits are booked for when the area is out of use, such as evenings, overnight, early mornings or weekends. When the team arrives, the work area is protected and the relevant equipment is switched off to cool, and the work takes from a few hours to more than one visit, depending on duct length and access. Somewhere like Upshire, lanes, gates and parking are worth mentioning in advance.

  1. Diagnosis: a survey of the duct’s route, size and access.
  2. You get a fixed price before work starts.
  3. We clean section by section, working from panel to panel.
  4. We take extra care at bends and at the foot of risers.
  5. The duct is signed off with readings, photos and a next clean date.

Preparing for the visit

  • Mention any locked doors, roof access or ceiling voids
  • Move anything stored near the system
  • Name a contact who can let us in at the agreed time

Related advice

Do you need ductwork cleaning in Upshire?

Slow air leaves the most grease behind. Flat runs, bends, reducers and the base of risers are the usual hotspots, and those are the points we pay most attention to.

Clients normally contact us after spotting one of these:

  • Proof of duct cleaning for the insurer
  • A rancid smell from the extract duct
  • Grease pooling at the foot of the riser
  • Sections of duct with no access panels

Healthcare kitchens, like those at hospitals such as St. Margaret's Hospital (about 3.5 miles east), often cook for long hours, which puts them in BESA’s heavier-use bands.

What ductwork cleaning looks like in Upshire

The Food Standards Agency lists about 4 bars, pubs and nightclubs as registered food businesses within 1.5 miles or so of the middle of Upshire. A pub or hotel kitchen that cooks every day builds up grease in its extract like any other. Upshire is covered by Essex County Fire and Rescue Service. Fire and rescue authorities enforce the Fire Safety Order in most non-domestic premises, and in a kitchen that fire risk includes the grease in the extract. Environmental health officers from Epping Forest council inspect food businesses in Upshire. Extraction counts as kitchen equipment, so its condition can come up on the day. Our report lists what was cleaned and when, which is useful to have ready.

Hill Hall, about 4.7 miles east, is one of the historic houses near Upshire; if you run event catering at a venue like that, cleans can be booked between functions. Leave it or put it right?

A fire in a greasy duct is hard to reach and hard to stop. The duct can carry it to rooms, floors or roof spaces well away from the kitchen, so cleaning the duct is as important as cleaning the hood. It’s worth booking a check, because nobody sees inside a duct day to day.

We do not list prices on the website, because each job is priced on what it involves. For a fixed quote, call us on 0345 646 2711 or email us, and we’ll talk you through it.

What you get with us

  • CHAS and SafeContractor accredited, with ISO 9001
  • A BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease
  • A written report with pictures after every visit
  • Full insurance on every job

Take a look at our cost guide or our accreditations and certificates.

Between visits

How long the results last depends on use and care. We suggest:

  • Get panels fitted where the duct couldn’t be cleaned
  • Make sure filters are seated properly
  • Keep your cleaning records together
  • Book the next clean before the recommended date

The report names every part of the duct that couldn’t be reached, with the reason. You can then decide whether to have access panels fitted.

The less grease gets past the canopy, the cleaner the duct stays. Clean, properly seated filters are the duct’s best protection.

Managing agents and facilities teams in Upshire

Under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, the responsible person must assess and reduce fire risk, and that can be the employer, the owner, a landlord, a facilities manager or a managing agent. With shared responsibility, good records help everyone.

When the building owner and the occupier are different, it’s worth checking the lease for who maintains the systems. We can quote either party, and the report can go to both.

When it’s something else

Ductwork cleaning can’t fix everything, and we’ll tell you before we start. It will not put right:

  • Undersized or badly laid-out ducts
  • A failed fan motor at the end of the duct (a fan repair job)
  • Fire dampers that don’t close (they need testing and remedials)

If in doubt, phone us on 0345 646 2711, or send details by email and we’ll say what we think.

What the work covers

  • Attenuators
  • Horizontal duct runs
  • Multi-storey ducts
  • Access panels
  • Bends and junctions
  • Vertical risers

Upshire questions

Can you clean school kitchen extracts in Upshire during the holidays?

Yes, and it’s the easiest time to do it. The FSA’s register shows about 2 schools and colleges with food registrations within roughly a mile and a half of Upshire. Send us your term dates when you ring 0345 646 2711 or drop us a line, and we will fit the work in.

Will you come out to Upshire?

Yes. Villages and rural sites across the South East are part of our work, Upshire included. Photos of the system and directions to the site help us plan the visit.

Do I get a certificate for ductwork cleaning?

A photo report, with readings and before and after pictures, plus a TR19 certificate for a full system clean. The report says when the next clean is due.

Are you accredited?

CHAS, SafeContractor, ISO 9001 and BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite membership, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease. We’ve been trading since 2009 and we are fully insured.

How often should kitchen ducts be cleaned?

The minimum depends on how long the kitchen cooks each day: every 3 months for 12 to 16 hours, 6 months for 6 to 12 hours and 12 months for 2 to 6 hours. Grease readings may show it needs doing sooner.

Do you have insurance?

Yes. Full insurance covers our work and have been trading since 2009.

Which kinds of sites do you work on?

All kinds of commercial and public premises: kitchens, offices, schools, healthcare, retail, leisure and food production. We fit the work around how the site operates.

What do you need from me for a quote?

Where the site is, what it is and when it’s open, plus photos of the system and your last certificate or report if you have one.

What the work involves, part by part

Access panels

Access panels are the doors that let us into the duct. Where there are none, those sections can’t be cleaned and the report has to say so.

Attenuators and discharge

Near the discharge, the air has cooled the most, so it can collect more grease than expected. It’s tested and cleaned along with the rest.
