About our ductwork cleaning in Steephill
Duct cleaning is the hardest part of an extract clean, and the part most often skipped. Without enough access panels, long stretches can go years without being touched. Each section we can reach is cleaned, and any we cannot is written down, so you know exactly where you stand. We are often asked to deal with years of grease along the duct floor and thick deposits at the bottom of a vertical duct, across attenuators, horizontal duct runs and access panels.
In a small place like Steephill, kitchens are often in older or extended buildings, with long single-storey duct runs, where grease settles in the flat sections. We agree access and timings in advance.
We’ve been trading since 2009, and we are a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease. We also hold CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001, and we are fully insured.

Looking after it afterwards
To keep the system working properly between visits:
- Don’t switch the extract off early
- Book the next clean before the recommended date
- Report any grease dripping from duct joints
- Do not block access panels with shelving or stock
Keep the certificate and report with the fire risk assessment. An insurer, fire officer or EHO may ask to see it, and the photos make the duct’s condition easy to see.
Keep the fan on throughout service. When the air stops, grease settles in the duct, so switching off early adds to the build-up.
What ductwork cleaning cannot fix
Ductwork cleaning can’t fix everything, and we will tell you before we start. It doesn’t solve:
- Ductwork that is corroded, split or holed (that needs a ductwork contractor)
- A worn-out fan that needs replacing
- Parts of the duct with no way in
If in doubt, call 0345 646 2711, or email photos and we will say what we think before booking.
Parts of the system we cover
- Access panels
- Vertical risers
- Multi-storey ducts
- Attenuators
- Bends and junctions
- Horizontal duct runs
The process
Protection comes first: floors, worktops and anything near the work are covered. After that, the system is made safe and the work begins. The work on site takes a shift or more, depending on the length of the runs and the number of access points, and we clear up before we go. Visits to a village like Steephill are booked in advance, at a time that suits whoever runs the site.
- The duct route is surveyed and every access point found.
- We take grease readings along the route.
- Once the kitchen has closed, we protect the area and open the panels.
- Thick grease is scraped out, then the runs and risers are degreased.
- We close up, re-test, photograph and record anything out of reach.
Before we arrive
- Make sure someone can let us in and lock up afterwards
- Dig out any earlier paperwork for the system
- Mention any sign-in, permit or induction we need

How the job changes from site to site
Horizontal duct runs
Horizontal runs carry the extract along ceilings and through voids. Grease drops out of the slowing air along them, so each section is cleaned through its access panels.
Vertical risers
Risers often pass through floors and walls, where fire dampers may be fitted. Damper testing is a separate service.
For landlords and multi-site operators
The Fire Safety Order 2005 puts the duty to manage fire risk on the responsible person, which may be the employer, owner, landlord, FM or managing agent. With shared responsibility, good records help everyone.
For anyone managing more than one site, we can plan visits across the whole estate and price them together. Every building has its own written report, so records stay tidy.
Common questions in Steephill
Do you clean school canteen extracts around Steephill out of term?
Yes. Half-terms and the summer break are the natural time for school work. The FSA’s register shows about 2 schools and colleges with food registrations within roughly a mile and a half of Steephill. You can call us on 0345 646 2711 or send us an email with the dates the site is empty.
Does coastal air change anything about ductwork cleaning in Steephill?
Yes, to a degree: at about 1 mile from the coast, Steephill gets salt-laden air that corrodes metal faster. Corroded fixings and housings are noted on the report so they can be dealt with.
How long will the duct clean take?
A short duct can be cleaned in a few hours, while long ducts and tall risers can need more than one visit. We plan the work around your kitchen.
Do you survey before quoting?
Yes, every time. Diagnosis comes before treatment: the survey tells us what the system needs and how to reach it, and the quote is based on that.
What’s the cleaning interval for extract ductwork?
BESA guidance sets minimum intervals by daily cooking hours: 3-monthly for heavy use, 6-monthly for moderate and 12-monthly for light use. Measured grease sets the real interval.
How far ahead should we book?
That depends on the slot you want and the size of the job. Tell us your preferred dates when you ask for a quote, and if it’s an emergency, call us any time.
How much does ductwork cleaning cost?
Size, condition, access and working hours all affect the cost. Ask us for a fixed quote and we will usually reply within one working day.
What shows that the ducts need a clean?
Signs include grease dripping from joints, smells and a fan working harder, but measuring is the reliable way to know. A WFTT or DTT reading gives a clear answer.

Staff cleaning versus specialist work
Keep a record of what your team does. A dated log of in-house cleaning and checks helps show that the system is managed between specialist visits, alongside our reports.
Staff cleaning doesn’t replace a specialist visit; it supports it. Clean filters and tidy surfaces slow the build-up, but hidden parts of the system still need specialist attention.
Ductwork cleaning in Steephill: the local picture
The coast is only about 1 mile from Steephill. Salt in the air is hard on rooftop fans, discharge cowls and fixings, so we check them for corrosion as well as grease. The FSA’s data shows about 12 bars, pubs and nightclubs and about 9 hotels and guest houses registered in Steephill and the streets around it, up to about 1.5 miles out. Any of them serving cooked food has an extract to keep clean, from canopy to discharge. Kitchens in Steephill get their food hygiene inspections from Isle of Wight council. An officer looking round a kitchen will see the canopy, and grease there is hard to miss. A dated certificate in the maintenance file answers the question before it’s asked.
A hospital like Arthur Webster Memorial Hospital for Children, about 3.6 miles north-east, is the kind of site where a kitchen may cook for patients, staff and visitors all day. Church and community hall kitchens, near Church of St. Alban-the-martyr or anywhere around Steephill, are easy to forget, but their extracts collect grease like any other.

Do you need ductwork cleaning in Steephill?
Slow air leaves the most grease behind. Long horizontal runs, bends, changes in size and the foot of a riser all collect more, and those are the points we pay most attention to.
The symptoms we’re asked about most include:
- Thick deposits at the bottom of a vertical duct
- Sections of duct with no access panels
- Thick crusts of old grease along the duct
- A grease test showing the duct is overdue
For schools such as St Francis Catholic and Church of England Primary Academy, kitchen extract cleaning is normally booked for the holidays, when the canteen is closed.
