Ductwork cleaning in Runwell: the local picture
The FSA’s food hygiene register shows about 29 restaurants, cafés and canteens and about 19 takeaways and sandwich shops in Runwell and the streets around it, up to about 1.5 miles out. Where they cook under a canopy, grease doesn’t stop at the filters: it settles along the duct and up the riser. In Runwell, food businesses are inspected by environmental health officers from Basildon council. An officer looking round a kitchen will see the canopy, and grease there is hard to miss. A dated certificate in the maintenance file answers the question before it’s asked. Runwell sits within the area of Essex County Fire and Rescue Service. Its fire safety officers can audit commercial kitchens, and grease in the extract is part of a kitchen’s fire risk.
A kitchen near Wickford station that serves breakfast and dinner can run its extract twelve hours or more, which shortens the cleaning interval. If you run catering at a healthcare site, such as a hospital like Mayflower Community Hospital about 5.2 miles west, the extract may need cleaning more often than a part-time kitchen.

About our ductwork cleaning in Runwell
Duct Doctor has cleaned kitchen extract ductwork since 2009, working across London and the South East. We are a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, and our certificates are issued through the BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite portal. If you have a rancid smell from the extract duct and grease leaking from duct joints, we can put it right.
In a smaller place like Runwell, the kitchens with extract systems are more likely to be a pub, a café, a takeaway or a school or care home kitchen than a big restaurant. Quieter kitchens still collect grease in the duct, just more slowly, so cleaning is planned around how much it cooks and what the readings show.
It’s worth checking any contractor’s accreditations. Ours are BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite membership, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, plus CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001, with full insurance on top.

Keeping the system healthy
Think of this as the after-treatment advice, in brief:
- Consider fitting panels where the report shows gaps
- Report any grease dripping from duct joints
- Keep your cleaning records together
- Ask for a grease thickness test if the kitchen gets busier
A full system clean includes a TR19 certificate from the BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite portal. It shows when and where the clean was done and by whom.
Keep the fan on throughout service. When the air stops, grease settles in the duct, so switching off early adds to the build-up.
Signs you need ductwork cleaning in Runwell
The further the air travels from the cooking, the cooler it gets. Cooling air drops its grease onto the inside of the duct, which is why ducts go on gathering grease well beyond the filters.
Keep an eye out for any of the following:
- An insurer asking for TR19 evidence
- Smells of old cooking grease from the ductwork
- Grease pooling at the foot of the riser
- Years of grease along the duct floor
Bursars and site managers at schools such as Runwell Community Primary School tend to book extract cleaning for when the kitchen is empty.
Before you book anyone
- Which accreditations they hold, and whether you can check them
- Whether the work can be done while the site is closed
- What happens if part of the system can’t be accessed
- Exactly which parts of the system are covered
What a clean will not put right
In fairness, some problems need a different fix:
- Ductwork that’s corroded, split or holed (that needs a ductwork contractor)
- Ductwork that was poorly designed
- Parts of the duct with no way in
If you’re not sure, just phone us on 0345 646 2711 or drop us a line and we’ll give you a straight answer before you book.

Runwell: your questions answered
Do you cover smaller places like Runwell?
Yes, smaller places are covered as well as towns. A survey first, from pictures or a visit, means we arrive with the right kit.
Which fire authority looks after Runwell?
It’s Essex County Fire and Rescue Service, which covers Runwell. It’s worth keeping your fire risk assessment, TR19® certificates and photo reports together, ready to show.
What do you do to protect the area?
We start with protection: floor sheeting and covers over nearby surfaces and equipment. The area is left tidy, with our waste taken away.
What if part of the duct can’t be reached?
Ductwork needs access to be cleaned. We record those sections on the report and can fit access panels.
Do we have to stop cooking while the ducts are cleaned?
Only while we’re working, and we work around you. Most kitchens book overnight or weekend cleans, so no service is lost.
Do you have insurance?
Yes, we’re fully insured. CHAS and SafeContractor accreditation sit alongside it, for sites that check contractor safety.
Can you fit access panels in our ductwork?
Yes, as part of our fits and repairs work. We place them where they help most, and we’ll recommend where.
Can we book visits on a schedule?
Yes. We run scheduled maintenance contracts, set at the interval the system needs. The report from each visit recommends the next date.
What the work involves, part by part
Horizontal duct runs
Horizontal runs carry the extract along ceilings and through voids. Grease drops out of the slowing air along them, and we clean them section by section through access panels.
Bends and transitions
Bends, elbows and changes of size are where grease collects most. The air slows and drops its load, so we clean these points carefully.
Why it’s worth doing now in Runwell
A partly blocked duct slows the airflow. Less air moves, so heat and smoke stay in the kitchen while the fan strains and grease can drip from duct joints. A visit arranged in advance is far less disruptive than a callout on a busy day.
Combining work into one visit or one programme can make for a more efficient booking. Tell us about everything you’d like looked at and we’ll price it together.

The process
The visit has three parts: set-up, the treatment itself and the sign-off. Set-up means sheeting and making equipment safe, and the sign-off is a written report with photos. Most of the time goes on the work itself, and that takes a shift or more, depending on the length of the runs and the number of access points. Tell us when your site near Runwell is quiet and the visit will be booked for then.
- We start by working out how the duct runs and where it can be opened.
- We measure grease thickness at set points before cleaning.
- Access panels are opened and heavy deposits scraped out by hand.
- Next the ducts and risers are degreased, using whatever suits the deposit.
- We test again, take photos and note any part that couldn’t be reached.
Getting ready for the visit
- Make sure someone can let us in and lock up afterwards
- Have your last certificate or report to hand
- Let us know how we reach the system, including roofs, risers and plant rooms
