Ductwork cleaning in Notting Hill, done properly

Each extract duct we take on in Notting Hill goes through the full routine: we test the grease first, remove thick deposits by hand and degrease what’s left. Post-clean readings and pictures complete the record. The work covers vertical risers, access panels and horizontal duct runs, and people most often call us about thick crusts of old grease along the duct and duct runs with no cleaning record.

Across London, many commercial kitchens are squeezed into basements and narrow back-of-house spaces, with extract ducts that can climb several floors to discharge at roof level. In Notting Hill, as elsewhere in the capital, a long duct run means more access points to open and more grease to remove.

Our accreditations include CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001, and we are fully insured. We’re also a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, trading since 2009.

Keeping the system healthy

Here’s the after-treatment advice, short and simple:

  • Ask for a grease thickness test if the kitchen gets busier
  • Diarise the next duct clean
  • Don’t block access panels with shelving or stock
  • Flag drips from the duct right away

Every panel we open is refitted when we finish, and the area around them is cleaned down. Waste grease and water are taken away.

Grease that never reaches the duct never needs cleaning out of it. Clean, properly seated filters are the duct’s best protection.

What ductwork cleaning can’t fix

Not every problem is solved by ductwork cleaning, and we’d rather say so up front. It won’t put right:

  • Duct sections that need replacing
  • Undersized or badly laid-out ducts
  • A failed fan motor at the end of the duct (a fan repair job)

If you’re not sure, just phone us on 0345 646 2711 or drop us a line and we will give you a straight answer.

Parts of the system we cover

  • Bends and junctions
  • Multi-storey ducts
  • Attenuators
  • Horizontal duct runs
  • Vertical risers
  • Access panels

How the visit works

The visit has three parts: getting the area ready, doing the work and signing it off. Set-up means sheeting and making equipment safe, and the sign-off is a written report with pictures. Most of the time goes on the work itself, and that takes anything from a few hours to several visits, depending on the length of duct. Most London sites can’t stop for the day, so work in Notting Hill is normally done overnight, early in the morning or at weekends.

  1. We map the duct route and check where the access panels are.
  2. Set points along the runs are tested for grease.
  3. Through the access panels, thick grease is removed by hand first.
  4. Horizontal runs and risers are then degreased by the method that suits the deposit.
  5. Post-clean readings and photos go into the report, with any unreachable section listed.

Getting ready for the visit

  • Tell us about site rules, permits or sign-in
  • Allow time for equipment near the work to be turned off and cool down
  • Mention any parking or loading restrictions

Why it’s worth doing now in Notting Hill

Under BESA guidance, the mean grease level should stay at or below 200 microns between cleans. Anywhere that reaches 500 microns or more needs immediate spot cleaning. Putting off the clean only pushes readings higher. In Notting Hill, a planned overnight visit is much easier than closing unexpectedly.

Every site is different, so we price each one individually. The size of the job, how we reach it, its condition and the working hours all make a difference.

Different parts, different methods

Bends and transitions

Grease tends to pile up at elbows. We clean it back by hand and with degreaser, and test it before and after.

Vertical risers

Risers carry the extract up through the building to the roof. Grease collects on the walls and at the foot of the riser, so the base is one of our test points.

What we’re called out for in Notting Hill

Grease settles fastest where the air slows down. Flat runs, bends, reducers and the base of risers are the usual hotspots, and those are the points we pay most attention to.

What we are most often called out for:

  • Heavy grease at the base of a riser
  • Duct runs that can’t be reached
  • Stale grease odours from the duct
  • Fat dripping from the ductwork

For schools such as St Clement and St James CofE Primary School, kitchen extract cleaning is normally booked for the holidays, when the canteen is closed.

What your quote should include

  • Whether the price is fixed
  • Whether the quote shows VAT
  • When they can work, and whether that is outside your opening hours
  • Which accreditations they hold, and whether you can check them

How to choose an extract cleaning contractor

Ductwork cleaning in Notting Hill: the local picture

The FSA’s food hygiene register shows about 1,288 restaurants, cafés and works canteens and about 167 sandwich bars and takeaways in and around Notting Hill, up to about a mile and a half out. Wherever those kitchens cook under a canopy, the horizontal runs and risers need cleaning as well as the hood. It’s Kensington and Chelsea council that sends environmental health officers to food businesses in Notting Hill. The cleanliness of the kitchen and its equipment, extraction included, is part of what they check. A dated certificate in the maintenance file answers the question before it’s asked. Notting Hill is covered by London Fire Brigade. Its fire safety officers can audit commercial kitchens, and grease in the extract is part of a kitchen’s fire risk.

A hospital like Paddington General Hospital, about 1 mile north, is the kind of site where a kitchen may cook for patients, staff and visitors all day. A hall kitchen that only cooks for events, whether near St John's Notting Hill or elsewhere in Notting Hill, still needs its extract cleaned, just less often.

Landlords, agents and facilities managers

Running several sites is easier with one contractor. We cover South East England and London, so a run of sites can go into one programme and kept on a regular cycle.

For anyone managing more than one site, we can schedule visits across all of them on one quote. Each site gets its own report and pictures, so records stay tidy.

Questions from Notting Hill

Which fire and rescue service is responsible for Notting Hill?

That’s London Fire Brigade. Records of extract cleaning are a sensible thing to have ready if a fire safety officer carries out an audit.

Does London parking affect a job in Notting Hill?

London parking can be tight, so details of loading bays and permits help. Much of our London work is done overnight, which helps.

What paperwork do you give after a duct clean?

When the duct is cleaned as part of a full TR19 clean, you get a TR19 certificate and a photo report. The report shows readings, pictures and any sections we couldn’t reach.

How long will the duct clean take?

A short duct can be cleaned in a few hours, but long or complex ducts may take several visits. We plan the work around your kitchen.

Where does the waste go?

It’s contained and taken away. Grease, debris and waste water are collected as the work goes on rather than letting it spread.

What accreditations do you have?

Duct Doctor is a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease. We also hold CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001, and we’re fully insured.

Can one contract cover all our sites?

Yes. Tell us the addresses and what each needs and we will quote them together.

What happens if there aren’t enough access panels?

Without a way in, a section cannot be cleaned properly. We record those sections on the report and can fit access panels.
