Staff cleaning versus specialist work

If your staff spot something between visits, such as dripping grease, a noisy fan, a smell or a filter that won’t come clean, they should report it rather than try to fix it. We can diagnose it and quote.

Good housekeeping makes our visits easier, not unnecessary. Regular in-house cleaning slows the build-up, but hidden parts of the system still need specialist attention.

Ductwork cleaning for kitchens and businesses in New Zealand

Each extract duct we take on in New Zealand goes through the full routine: readings at set points, heavy grease scraped out by hand, then degreasing to suit the deposit. Readings are taken again afterwards and photos go into your report. We are often asked to deal with a grease test showing the duct is overdue and duct runs with no cleaning record, on horizontal duct runs, attenuators and bends and junctions.

In a village or hamlet like New Zealand, the kitchens that need extract cleaning are typically a pub, a school, a care home or a hall kitchen, wherever there is one. Each still has a canopy and duct that collect grease, whatever the size of the place.

A written report with pictures follows every visit, so you have a record of what was done and when. Where the work is a TR19® Grease clean, the certificate is issued through the BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite portal.

Looking after it afterwards

How long the results last depends on use and care. We suggest:

  • Report any grease dripping from duct joints
  • Have the grease measured if cooking hours go up
  • Consider fitting panels where the report shows gaps
  • Diarise the next duct clean

After the clean, the same points are tested again, giving you before and after readings. Photos of each section go alongside them.

Have access panels fitted where sections cannot be reached. Grease you can reach is grease that gets removed.

Part by part

Attenuators and discharge

At the end of the duct is the discharge. It can gather grease and mark the wall or roof around it, so it’s cleaned as far as safe access allows.

Vertical risers

Risers are cleaned through panels at different levels. Where it can’t be reached safely, the report says so.

What we do, step by step

When we arrive, we check the system against the survey or the pictures you sent. If anything is different, we talk it through with the person on site before carrying on. From there, it takes a few hours for a short run, longer for long runs and tall risers. A few pictures of the system help us make the most of a visit to a place like New Zealand.

  1. We trace the duct and find every way in.
  2. Grease thickness is measured at set points.
  3. Out of hours, the area is protected and the access panels opened.
  4. Thick grease is scraped out, then the runs and risers are degreased.
  5. Panels are closed, readings and pictures repeated, and unreachable sections recorded.

Preparing for the visit

  • Let us know when the site is closed or quiet
  • Tell us about access, such as roof hatches, plant rooms, ceilings or locked areas
  • Clear the space around the work

Advice

When to call us in New Zealand

Damaged or poorly fitted filters let more grease into the duct. The duct then takes grease that the filters should have stopped, and build-up speeds up.

Keep an eye out for these warning signs:

  • Grease leaking from duct joints
  • Duct runs with no cleaning record
  • An insurer asking for TR19 evidence
  • Sections of duct with no access panels

A hospital like Royal Buckinghamshire Hospital, about within half a mile south, is the kind of site where a kitchen may cook for patients, staff and visitors all day.

Questions to ask before you book

New Zealand kitchens: local notes

The FSA’s food hygiene register shows about 88 cafés, restaurants and staff canteens and about 56 takeaways within roughly a mile and a half of the centre of New Zealand. Wherever those kitchens cook under a canopy, the horizontal runs and risers need cleaning as well as the hood. Food hygiene inspections in New Zealand are the job of Buckinghamshire council’s environmental health team. Extraction counts as kitchen equipment, so its condition can come up on the day. A dated certificate in the maintenance file answers the question before it’s asked. The fire and rescue service for New Zealand is Buckinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service. In most workplaces, including commercial kitchens, it’s the fire and rescue authority that enforces the Fire Safety Order.

School kitchens, at schools like Elmhurst School for example, are typically cleaned in the holidays so no lunches are lost. A kitchen near Aylesbury station that serves breakfast and dinner can run its extract twelve hours or more, which shortens the cleaning interval.

New Zealand is about 1 mile west of Elmhurst, in Buckinghamshire. Wherever you are in the HP19 postcode area, we can take on ductwork cleaning. We cover 263 places across Buckinghamshire, from busy centres to quieter spots. You can also see our page for Milton Keynes, about 15 miles away.

Postcode districts we cover here for ductwork cleaning: HP19 and HP20. We cover sites on Dunsham Lane, Drayton Road and Cannock Road and the roads around them. Close by, we work in Elmhurst (1 mile east), Aylesbury (1 mile south), Watermead (1 mile north-east), Quarrendon Estate (1 mile west) and California (1 mile south). Within a short drive, we also cover High Wycombe (14 miles south), Chesham (12 miles south-east), Buckingham (14 miles north-west), Amersham (14 miles south-east), Princes Risborough (7 miles south) and Haddenham (6 miles south-west).

Local landmarks in New Zealand

Locally, jobs take us to businesses close to The New Zealand pub, Buckinghamshire UTC and The PACE Centre, among other places. The nearest railway station is Aylesbury station, about 0.8 miles south of the centre. Other landmarks nearby include Royal Buckinghamshire Hospital (within half a mile south) and Dinton Castle (3.8 miles south-west).

New Zealand questions

Who inspects food businesses in New Zealand?

In New Zealand, it’s Buckinghamshire council that carries out food hygiene inspections. How often a business is inspected depends on the risk rating the council gives it, so it’s worth staying ready all year.

Which fire service covers New Zealand?

Fire safety enforcement in New Zealand is handled by Buckinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service. If a fire safety officer visits a commercial kitchen, they may ask about the fire risk assessment and how the extract is kept clean.

Which accreditations do you hold?

CHAS, SafeContractor, ISO 9001 and BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite membership, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease. We are fully insured and have been trading since 2009.

How long does it take to clean extract ducts?

Allow from a few hours to more than one visit, depending on duct length and access. We’ll confirm the time when we quote.

Do you work with multi-site operators?

Yes. Send the list of sites and the work at each and you will get one fixed quote.

Do you survey before quoting?

Yes. We always survey first, from your photos and details, or with a visit where necessary. A fixed quote follows.

Can you price the work without visiting?

Often, yes. Photos of the system and the access, plus your opening hours and last report, are often enough. Where we can’t see enough, we arrange a survey.

How often does extract ductwork need cleaning?

It follows the same interval as the whole extract, from every 3 months for heavy use to every 12 months for light use. Grease thickness testing shows whether that is often enough.

Why act early in New Zealand

A fire in a greasy duct is hard to reach and hard to stop. It can travel through the ductwork to other parts of the building, so cleaning the duct is as important as cleaning the hood. With notice, the visit to New Zealand can be fitted around your bookings and events.

Several systems or sites on one quote often makes better use of the time. Tell us about everything you’d like looked at and we will price it together.

Fixed quotes for ductwork cleaning in New Zealand

You will get a fixed price before we start. It takes into account:

  • What state the system is in
  • Where the site is and how we reach it
  • How many systems or sites are involved
  • One-off work versus a regular cycle

Putting the work off seldom saves money. Build-up, wear and faults tend to get worse, not better, which can make the next visit longer. If you are not sure what’s needed, phone us on 0345 646 2711, or send details by email for straight advice and a fixed quote.

What to send for a quote

Many jobs can be priced from pictures and some basics. Send what you can of the following:

  • Your opening hours and when the area is out of use
  • The paperwork from the last visit, if you have it
  • Where the plant sits or the system leaves the building, such as a roof or outside wall
  • The site address and the type of premises

The quickest way to a quote is to send pictures: wide shots of the system, close-ups of anything that worries you and how we’d get to it. Tell us what kind of site it is and when it’s open, and we can price many jobs without a visit.
