Ductwork cleaning for kitchens and businesses in Great Baddow
Grease in a duct is hidden, which is exactly why it’s dangerous. Flames pulled in from the cooking line can ignite it, and fire can then run along the ductwork to other parts of the building. Cleaning the duct takes that fuel away. We are often asked to deal with years of grease along the duct floor and readings above 200 microns from a grease thickness test, on multi-storey ducts, access panels and vertical risers.
For a smaller kitchen near Great Baddow, a TR19® clean is the same job as anywhere: canopy, filters, plenum, duct, fan and discharge. The visit is booked around your opening hours, and the journey is planned ahead.
It’s worth checking any contractor’s accreditations. Ours are BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite membership, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, plus CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001, and we are fully insured.

How we price ductwork cleaning
We quote each job individually. These are the things that affect it:
- The condition of the system
- How easy every part is to reach
- Whether several sites go on one quote
- When the work can happen, such as evenings, overnight or weekends
We don’t list prices on the website, because the cost depends on the site in front of us. For a fixed quote, call 0345 646 2711 or email us, and we’ll talk you through it.
Asking for a quote
You do not need the technical terms. Just send:
- When the site is open and when it’s quiet
- Wide photos of the system and the area around it
- Detail shots of panels, filters and grilles
- The site address and the type of premises
Quoting starts with a diagnosis, either from photos and details you send or from a site visit. After that, you get a fixed price for the work so you know the cost before we start.
What the work involves, part by part
Bends and transitions
A bend can hold far more grease than a straight run of the same length. It’s scraped out and degreased, and readings are taken there before and after.
Vertical risers
A riser takes the duct up through one or more floors. Grease collects on the walls and at the foot of the riser, so the base is one of our test points.
Multi-site and managed buildings
We work for landlords, managing agents and facilities managers as well as the people running the site. Where a system serves more than one tenant, such as a shared riser, it helps to agree who arranges the work, and we’re happy to quote for all of it.
Where a tenant occupies the premises but the landlord owns the building, the lease normally sets out who maintains what. We can quote either party, and the report can go to both.

Looking after it afterwards
Once we have finished, these simple steps help:
- Don’t block access panels with shelving or stock
- Consider fitting panels where the report shows gaps
- Never cook with a filter missing
- Keep your cleaning records together
A full system clean includes a TR19 certificate from the BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite portal. It shows when and where the clean was done and by whom.
Grease that never reaches the duct never needs cleaning out of it. Clean, properly seated filters are the duct’s best protection.
What staff can safely do
In-house cleaning and specialist cleaning do different jobs. A daily filter wipe and a weekly filter wash keep grease down at the front of the system, but grease that has passed the filters is out of reach. That part needs specialist access and equipment.
Some jobs should never be done in-house: opening up ductwork, cleaning fans, drop testing fire dampers and measuring grease need training, the right equipment and safe access. Leave those to us.
Common questions in Great Baddow
Will you come out to Great Baddow?
Yes, smaller places are covered as well as towns. Photos of the system and directions to the site help us plan the visit.
Which fire authority looks after Great Baddow?
Essex County Fire and Rescue Service is the fire and rescue service for Great Baddow. It’s worth keeping your fire risk assessment, TR19® certificates and photo reports together, ready to show.
What information do you need?
Just the basics: the address, the site type, your opening hours and how we reach the system. Photos and the last report help too. Then call 0345 646 2711 or send us an email.
Can you come out in an emergency?
Yes. There’s a 24/7 emergency line for anything that cannot wait until a planned visit. Call us any time and explain what’s happened.
How do you know if the ductwork needs cleaning?
Drips, smells and weak extraction are clues, but the only sure way is to measure. A WFTT or DTT reading gives a clear answer.
Are you fully insured?
Yes. Duct Doctor is fully insured, and we can share the details when you need them.
What’s TR19?
It’s BESA’s specification and the benchmark insurers, fire officers and EHOs look to. It covers how systems are inspected, cleaned and checked, and it takes a risk-based approach.
Do you offer maintenance contracts?
Yes. Regular plans can run on 3, 6 or 12-monthly cycles, depending on what the system needs.
Signs you need ductwork cleaning in Great Baddow
A duct with too few access doors cannot be fully cleaned. Sections between panels go uncleaned, sometimes since the system was installed, and grease there keeps thickening unseen.
These are the problems we see most often:
- Years of grease along the duct floor
- Grease seeping out of the duct seams
- High readings at a recent grease test
- Heavy grease at the base of a riser
Kitchens that cook twelve hours or more a day, as some healthcare kitchens do, fall into BESA’s three-monthly minimum; Baddow Hospital is the nearest hospital to Great Baddow, about 0.6 miles south.
What to look for in a quote
- Whether they recommend a next date
- Whether the figure could change on the day
- Whether the work can be done while the site is closed
- What happens if part of the system cannot be accessed

What we do, step by step
Your trading hours come first. We book the visit for a time the area is closed, whether that is an evening, overnight or a weekend. When the team arrives, the work area is protected and the relevant equipment is switched off to cool, and the work takes a shift or more, depending on the length of the runs and the number of access points. In a place like Great Baddow, we fit the visit around your hours.
- We start by working out how the duct runs and where it can be opened.
- Grease readings are taken at set points along the duct.
- We open the panels and scrape out the heaviest grease.
- Next the ducts and risers are degreased, using whatever suits the deposit.
- Readings and pictures are repeated and any section we couldn’t reach is recorded.
How to prepare
- Make sure someone can let us in and lock up afterwards
- Dig out any earlier paperwork for the system
- Mention any locked doors, roof access or ceiling voids
