Ductwork cleaning near Cumnor

Cumnor kitchens: local notes

Cumnor is covered by Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue Service. Its fire safety officers can audit commercial kitchens, and grease in the extract is part of a kitchen’s fire risk. Environmental health officers from Vale of White Horse council inspect food businesses in Cumnor. A greasy canopy or dripping filters are the sort of thing an inspection can pick up. A dated certificate in the maintenance file answers the question before it’s asked.

School kitchens, at schools like Cumnor Church of England School (Voluntary Controlled) for example, are typically cleaned in the holidays so no lunches are lost. Volunteers running a hall kitchen near Church of St Michael, or anywhere in Cumnor, may not know when the extract was last cleaned, and a grease test settles it.

How we handle ductwork cleaning in Cumnor

Every duct has its own route. A few metres to an outside wall, or a riser up through the building to a roof fan. We map the route during the survey and finds every access point before we quote. Common call-outs are for sections of duct with no access panels and duct runs with no cleaning record, on vertical risers, horizontal duct runs and access panels.

Somewhere as small as Cumnor, commercial kitchens are few: perhaps a pub, a school or care home kitchen, or a hall used for events. Every one of them still needs its extract kept clear of grease.

Duct Doctor has been trading since 2009, and we are a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease. CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001 are in place too, and we carry full insurance.

FAQs for Cumnor

Do you clean school canteen extracts around Cumnor out of term?

Yes. Half-terms and the summer break are the natural time for school work. The FSA’s register shows about 2 schools and colleges with food registrations within roughly a mile and a half of Cumnor. Just give us a ring on 0345 646 2711 or use the quote form with your term dates and we will plan around them.

Which fire authority looks after Cumnor?

It’s Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue Service, which covers Cumnor. It’s worth keeping your fire risk assessment, TR19® certificates and photo reports together, ready to show.

What do you do with what you remove?

We contain it and take it with us. Grease, debris and waste water are collected as the work goes on, so it doesn’t spread.

How often should kitchen ducts be cleaned?

It follows the same interval as the whole extract, from every 3 months for heavy use to every 12 months for light use. Grease thickness testing shows whether that is often enough.

What information do you need?

The site address, the type of premises and your opening hours, along with a few pictures and any previous report.

Do you work with multi-site operators?

Yes. Our area covers London and the South East, so we can schedule a run of sites on one programme. Each site gets its own report and photos.

How long does ductwork cleaning take?

Allow a shift or more, depending on the length of the runs and the number of access points. The survey tells us how long your duct needs.

How far ahead should we book?

It depends on the time you need and how big the job is. Mention your preferred dates with your enquiry, and for anything urgent, ring our 24/7 emergency line.

Why deal with it now?

Dealing with the ductwork in Cumnor now beats dealing with it after a problem. The work takes from a few hours to more than one visit, depending on duct length and access, done out of hours so the kitchen keeps cooking. Systems in rural buildings are often out of sight and out of mind.

Working hours, access and the scale of the site all affect the cost. Each of those is built into the quote and give you a fixed price before any work starts.

Aftercare tips

Good habits slow the build-up between visits. Our tips:

  • Don’t block access panels with shelving or stock
  • Consider fitting panels where the report shows gaps
  • Never cook with a filter missing
  • Ask for a grease thickness test if the kitchen gets busier

Access panels are closed and sealed back up after cleaning, and the surrounding area is left clean. Grease and dirty water are contained and removed.

Keep to the cleaning interval on the report. If the kitchen starts cooking longer hours, the interval may need to shorten, and grease thickness testing will show it.

Honest limits

We’d rather tell you now than book work that will not help, so here are the limits:

  • Ductwork that’s corroded, split or holed (that needs a ductwork contractor)
  • Duct sealed behind fixed ceilings or walls
  • A failed fan motor at the end of the duct (a fan repair job)

If in doubt, ring 0345 646 2711 or email us and we will say what we think before booking.

Where we work

  • Vertical risers
  • Attenuators
  • Multi-storey ducts
  • Access panels
  • Horizontal duct runs
  • Bends and junctions

What the work involves, part by part

Horizontal duct runs

The underside of a horizontal duct collects the most grease. We scrape out the heavy layer first, then the walls and roof are cleaned too.

Bends and transitions

A bend can hold far more grease than a straight run of the same length. We clean it back by hand and with degreaser, and readings are taken there before and after.

Common problems we fix in Cumnor

Grease in a duct running from a kitchen in Cumnor is as much a fire risk as in any building. Burning grease can carry fire through the ductwork to other rooms or floors, which is why the responsible person needs it under control.

Most sites get in touch when they notice something like this:

  • Stale grease odours from the duct
  • Duct runs with no cleaning record
  • A duct clean needed for an insurer
  • Grease seeping out of the duct seams

Older buildings often hide long, awkward duct runs, and if you run a kitchen at a historic venue in the area (Appleton Manor is about 1.9 miles south-west), access may need planning.

Before booking anyone

  • How they set the interval to the next visit
  • Whether they’re fully insured
  • How areas they cannot reach will be recorded
  • Their accreditations, such as BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite, CHAS or SafeContractor

Our hiring checklist

What staff can safely do

Staff cleaning doesn’t replace a specialist visit; it supports it. Regular in-house cleaning slows the build-up, but the parts you can’t see still need a specialist at the right interval.

Staff cleaning and specialist work are not the same thing. A daily filter wipe and a weekly filter wash keep grease down at the front of the system, but they don’t reach the grease that builds up further in. That part needs specialist access and equipment.

How it works

Your staff do not need to do much on the day. A contact on site lets us in at the agreed time and points us to the system, and the rest is down to us. Before we leave, the area is tidied and the paperwork follows. Somewhere like Cumnor, lanes, gates and parking are worth mentioning in advance.

  1. We map the duct route and check where the access panels are.
  2. Grease readings are taken at set points along the duct.
  3. Through the access panels, thick grease is removed by hand first.
  4. Next the ducts and risers are degreased, using whatever suits the deposit.
  5. We test again, take photos and note any part that couldn’t be reached.

Getting ready for the visit

  • Let us know when the site is closed or quiet
  • Let us know about permits to work or site inductions
  • Tell us about access, such as roof hatches, plant rooms, ceilings or locked areas
