Ductwork cleaning in Crockenhill: the local picture
The FSA’s food hygiene register shows about 16 restaurants, cafés and works canteens and about 11 takeaways across Crockenhill and its immediate surroundings (about a mile and a half). Wherever those kitchens cook under a canopy, the horizontal runs and risers need cleaning as well as the hood. Crockenhill is covered by Kent Fire and Rescue Service. Fire and rescue authorities enforce the Fire Safety Order in most non-domestic premises, and in a kitchen that fire risk includes the grease in the extract. Kitchens in Crockenhill get their food hygiene inspections from Sevenoaks council. Extraction counts as kitchen equipment, so its condition can come up on the day. Before-and-after photos from each clean are a simple way to show the extract is in hand.
For schools such as Crockenhill Primary School, kitchen extract cleaning is typically booked for the holidays, when the canteen is closed. Church and community hall kitchens, near Church of All Souls or anywhere around Crockenhill, are easy to forget, but their extracts collect grease like any other.

Ductwork cleaning in Crockenhill
Not every duct has enough access panels. Where a section can’t be reached, TR19 expects it to be recorded on the report, and we can fit new access panels so it’s cleaned next time. An honest report beats a guess. The work covers bends and junctions, vertical risers and multi-storey ducts, and the jobs we see most are grease seeping out of the duct seams and sections of duct with no access panels.
In a small place like Crockenhill, kitchens are often in older or extended buildings, with long single-storey duct runs, where grease settles in the flat sections. Access, parking and timings are agreed before the day.
Accreditations are easy to claim and worth checking. We are a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, and we hold CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001, and we’re fully insured.

How the job changes from site to site
Vertical risers
In taller buildings, a riser may pass through several floors and fire compartments, so fire dampers may be fitted where it crosses them. We test those as a separate job.
Attenuators and discharge
Near the discharge, the air has cooled the most, which can mean heavier deposits. It’s tested and cleaned along with the rest.

Managing agents and facilities teams in Crockenhill
If you look after several sites, we can plan visits across the whole estate and price them together. Each site gets its own report and pictures, so each one has its own record.
Records are where multi-site compliance often slips. Each visit produces a dated report with pictures, ready to show insurers, fire officers or EHOs.
Questions from Crockenhill
Can you clean school kitchen extracts in Crockenhill during the holidays?
Yes. The holidays are the usual time for school work. With about 5 schools and colleges on the FSA’s register within roughly a mile and a half of Crockenhill, it pays to plan holiday dates ahead. Booking early in the term gives the best choice of holiday dates.
Which council inspects kitchens in Crockenhill?
In Crockenhill, it’s Sevenoaks council that carries out food hygiene inspections. It helps to keep the extract cleaning records with your food safety paperwork, so they’re ready if asked for.
Can you quote from photos?
Yes, where the pictures show enough. Otherwise, we book a survey at a time that suits the site, then a fixed quote.
Are you accredited?
We hold CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001, alongside BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite membership, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease. Vent Hygiene Elite is run by BESCA and independently audited.
What’s the cleaning interval for extract ductwork?
The duct is cleaned as part of the whole system, at intervals set by BESA guidance, from every 3 months for heavy use to every 12 months for light use. Readings tell you if it needs to be more often.
What information do you need?
Where the site is, what it is and when it’s open, plus photos of the system and your last certificate or report if you have one.
Do you install duct access panels?
Yes, extra panels can be fitted. It means more of the duct can be cleaned next time, and the report will show where they’re needed.
What if parts of the system cannot be reached?
We record them on the report, with a note of where it is, and we explain what access is needed, such as extra access panels in ductwork.
Do you need ductwork cleaning in Crockenhill?
A greasy duct is a fire path, in Crockenhill as anywhere. Burning grease can carry fire through the ductwork to other rooms or floors, which is why the responsible person needs it under control.
The symptoms we are asked about most include:
- Ductwork that has never been cleaned
- Grease seeping out of the duct seams
- A grease test showing the duct is overdue
- Proof of duct cleaning for the insurer
Healthcare kitchens can’t easily close, so their extracts are cleaned overnight or between meal services; the nearest hospital to Crockenhill is Orpington Hospital, about 3.2 miles south-west.

What staff can safely do
Logging matters as much as cleaning. A dated log of in-house cleaning and checks helps show that the system is managed between specialist visits, alongside our reports.
Good housekeeping makes our visits easier, not unnecessary. Regular in-house cleaning slows the build-up, but the parts you can’t see still need a specialist at the right interval.
Keeping the system healthy
No system stays clean for ever, but care slows the build-up. A few tips:
- Check readings when the menu changes
- Keep access panels clear of stored items
- Consider fitting panels where the report shows gaps
- Diarise the next duct clean
A full system clean includes a TR19 certificate from the BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite portal. It shows when and where the clean was done and by whom.
Keep the fan on throughout service. When the air stops, grease settles in the duct, so switching off early adds to the build-up.
What a clean will not put right
A few issues sit outside what this work can do:
- Duct sealed behind fixed ceilings or walls
- Fire dampers that do not close (they need testing and remedials)
- Ductwork that’s corroded, split or holed (that needs a ductwork contractor)
If in doubt, give us a ring on 0345 646 2711 or send us an email and we will say what we think.

- Access panels
- Multi-storey ducts
- Bends and junctions
The process
There are three stages on the day: getting the area ready, doing the work and signing it off. Set-up means sheeting and making equipment safe, and the sign-off is a written report with pictures. The middle part takes longest, and that takes a few hours for a short run, longer for long runs and tall risers. We agree a date with you, plan the drive to Crockenhill and turn up when the site is quiet.
- We map the duct route and check where the access panels are.
- We measure grease thickness at set points before cleaning.
- We open the panels and scrape out the heaviest grease.
- The duct is degreased with the method that suits the grease, from degreasers to hot water or steam.
- Readings and photos are repeated and any section we couldn’t reach is recorded.
Before we arrive
- Allow time for equipment near the work to be turned off and cool down
- Find the previous report, if there is one
- Mention any locked doors, roof access or ceiling voids
