Ductwork cleaning in Charlton

Ductwork cleaning for kitchens and businesses in Charlton

No two duct runs are the same, in Charlton or anywhere else. Some run a short distance to an outside wall, others climb several floors to the roof. The survey traces the route, so we know where to get in and how long it will take. The work covers horizontal duct runs, attenuators and bends and junctions, and the jobs we see most are heavy grease at the base of a riser and smells of old cooking grease from the ductwork.

In a village or hamlet like Charlton, the kitchens that need extract cleaning are usually a pub, a school, a care home or a hall kitchen, wherever there is one. Each still has a canopy and duct that collect grease.

The report is your system’s health record: a dated account with photos of everything we did. For TR19® Grease cleans, the certificate comes through the BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite portal, ready for your insurer.

  • Ductwork that was poorly designed

If in doubt, call us on 0345 646 2711, or send details by email and we will say what we think.

Charlton questions

Who would carry out a food hygiene inspection at a kitchen in Charlton?

Kitchens in Charlton are inspected by Test Valley council’s environmental health officers. Have your latest TR19® certificate and photo report to hand, as an officer may ask how the extract is maintained.

Can you work in Charlton outside opening hours?

Yes, nights and weekends are routine for us. Your customers, staff or residents in Charlton needn’t be disturbed. When you give us a ring on 0345 646 2711 or drop us a line, mention when the site is quiet.

What happens to the waste?

It leaves the site with us at the end of the visit. During the work, it’s contained so the area stays clean.

What if part of the duct cannot be reached?

Ductwork needs access to be cleaned. Those parts are listed, and we can install panels so they’re reached next time.

Which accreditations do you hold?

Our accreditations are CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001, alongside BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite membership, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease. The Vent Hygiene Elite scheme is run by BESCA and audited independently.

How much notice should we give?

Earlier is better, especially for out-of-hours work. Quotes typically come back within one working day, and there’s a 24/7 line for emergencies.

What paperwork do you give after a duct clean?

A full system clean comes with a TR19 certificate and a photo report. It includes readings, photos and any unreachable sections.

How often does extract ductwork need cleaning?

At least as often as BESA guidance sets for your cooking hours. Heavy use of 12 to 16 hours a day means at least every 3 months, while lighter use can go longer.

The process

On the day, we arrive at the time agreed with you, which is often after service, overnight or at a weekend. Equipment that has to be off is switched off and allowed to cool before any work starts, and the area around the work is covered and protected. On site, it takes a few hours for a short run, longer for long runs and tall risers. Rural roads and tight entrances are worth telling us about before a visit to Charlton.

  1. We start by working out how the duct runs and where it can be opened.
  2. Set points along the runs are tested for grease.
  3. We open the panels and scrape out the heaviest grease.
  4. Horizontal runs and risers are then degreased by the method that suits the deposit.
  5. Post-clean readings and pictures go into the report, with any unreachable section listed.

Before we arrive

  • Let us know how we reach the system, including roofs, risers and plant rooms
  • Mention any parking or loading restrictions
  • Let us know about permits to work or site inductions

Grease, kitchens and Charlton

The FSA’s food hygiene register shows about 55 restaurants, cafés and canteens and about 33 takeaways and sandwich shops within roughly a mile and a half of the centre of Charlton. Where they cook under a canopy, grease does not stop at the filters: it settles along the duct and up the riser. A dated certificate in the maintenance file answers the question before it’s asked. The fire and rescue service for Charlton is Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service. What we are called out for in Charlton

Ducts in Charlton gather grease for the same reasons as ducts anywhere: hours of cooking, the type of food and how well the filters are kept. Under BESA guidance, the minimum interval is 3, 6 or 12 months, by daily cooking hours.

These are the problems we see most often:

  • Fat dripping from the ductwork
  • Thick crusts of old grease along the duct
  • Smells of old cooking grease from the ductwork
  • Ductwork that has never been cleaned

Term dates shape school work: for a school like Harrow Way Community School, an extract clean fits neatly into a half-term or summer break.

Questions to ask before booking

What your team can do, and what needs us

Staff cleaning and specialist work aren’t the same thing. Wiping filters daily and washing them weekly keeps the visible parts in order, but they do not reach the grease that builds up further in. Reaching it takes a specialist with the right equipment.

Some jobs should never be done in-house: entering ducts, working on fans, testing dampers and taking grease readings call for the right kit, training and safe access. Leave those to us.

Aftercare tips

How long the results last depends on use and care. Here’s what we suggest:

  • Have the grease measured if cooking hours go up
  • Keep grease filters clean and fitted whenever you cook
  • Flag drips from the duct straight away
  • Get panels fitted where the duct couldn’t be cleaned

After the clean, the same points are tested again, so the report shows the before and after figures. Photos of each section go alongside them.

Grease that never reaches the duct never needs cleaning out of it. Keep the filters clean, well fitted and in place whenever you cook.

What happens if it’s left?

There’s no law that names TR19. Under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, the responsible person must assess and reduce fire risk, including the grease inside the extract ductwork. Equipment tucked in a roof space or outbuilding near Charlton rarely gets looked at unless someone books it.

Whatever the type of site, the quote works the same way: the size of the job, access, condition and working hours. Ask for a fixed quote and we’ll go through it with you.

For anyone managing more than one site, we can plan visits across the whole estate and price them together. Every building has its own written report, so each one has its own record.

Under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, the responsible person must assess and reduce fire risk, which may be the employer, owner, landlord, FM or managing agent. Where responsibility is shared, records matter even more.
