About our ductwork cleaning in Breeds

We’ve been trading since 2009, working across London and the South East. We are a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, and our certificates are issued through the BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite portal. We’re often asked to deal with high readings at a recent grease test and grease pooling at the foot of the riser, on horizontal duct runs, bends and junctions and access panels.

In a village or hamlet like Breeds, the kitchens that need extract cleaning are usually a pub, a school, a care home or a hall kitchen, wherever there is one. Each still has a canopy and duct that collect grease.

Duct Doctor has been trading since 2009, as a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease. CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001 are in place too, and we’re fully insured.

What affects the cost of ductwork cleaning

Your quote is based on your site. We consider:

  • One-off work versus a regular cycle
  • How easy every part is to reach
  • Any permits to work or inductions
  • The times the site is available

What you pay reflects the actual work. That’s why every job is surveyed first, and why the quote is fixed before any work starts.

Asking for a quote

Many jobs can be priced from pictures and some basics. Useful things to send:

  • Your opening hours and when the area is out of use
  • The paperwork from the last visit, if you have it
  • The postcode and the type of business
  • How we’d reach plant on a roof or in a plant room

To get a fixed quote, give us a ring on 0345 646 2711 or email us and tell us the type of site, your opening hours and roughly what the system looks like. Photos and the last report, if you have one, make the quote quicker. You’ll typically have a quote within one working day.

Questions from Breeds

Can the work in Breeds be done at night or at weekends?

Yes, we can come after you close and finish before you open. The work in Breeds can fit around your hours. Tell us your opening hours when you ask for a quote.

Who inspects food businesses in Breeds?

Food hygiene inspections in Breeds are carried out by Chelmsford council. How often a business is inspected depends on the risk rating the council gives it, so it’s worth staying ready all year.

Do you have insurance?

Yes. We are fully insured, and we can share the details when you need them.

Can one contract cover all our sites?

Yes. One number covers all your sites across London and the South East, with visits on a regular schedule.

Do we need to close while you work?

Not typically. We need the work area to ourselves while we’re on site, so the visit goes in a quiet slot.

What happens to the waste?

Waste is contained during the work and removed when we leave, including grease, debris and dirty water. None of it is left on site.

Are you accredited?

BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite membership, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, plus CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001. We’re fully insured and have been trading since 2009.

What happens if you can’t reach some of it?

They’re listed in the report, never skipped quietly. The report says which parts couldn’t be reached and why, along with a quote to put access in.

What happens if it’s left?

Under BESA guidance, the mean grease level should stay at or below 200 microns between cleans. Anywhere that reaches 500 microns or more needs immediate spot cleaning. Putting off the clean only pushes readings higher. Rural sites cannot always move to another kitchen or room when something fails.

Putting the work off seldom saves money. Build-up, wear and faults tend to get worse, not better, which can make the next visit longer. If you are unsure, phone us on 0345 646 2711 or send us an email and we will give you an honest view and a fixed quote.

The process

At the end of the visit, someone from your team can look over the work with us. Anything we couldn’t reach or that needs attention is pointed out there and then, and the same goes into the written report. The visit takes from a few hours to more than one visit, depending on duct length and access. A few photos of the system help us make the most of a visit to a place like Breeds.

  1. The duct route is surveyed and every access point found.
  2. Grease thickness is measured at set points.
  3. Out of hours, the area is protected and the access panels opened.
  4. Thick grease is scraped out, then the runs and risers are degreased.
  5. Panels are closed, readings and pictures repeated, and unreachable sections recorded.

Before we arrive

  • Let us know about parking and loading
  • Clear loose items from the work area
  • Tell us about site rules, permits or sign-in

Get a fixed quote

The quickest way to a quote is to send photos: the system from a couple of angles, plus any access panels or hatches. Tell us what kind of site it is and when it’s open, and many jobs can be priced from that alone.

Do you need ductwork cleaning in Breeds?

Many ducts don’t have enough access panels. Stretches with no way in may never have been touched, and grease there keeps thickening unseen.

These are the problems we see most often:

  • Thick crusts of old grease along the duct
  • Proof of duct cleaning for the insurer
  • Stale grease odours from the duct
  • Readings above 200 microns from a grease thickness test

School kitchens, at schools like Chelmer Valley High School for example, are usually cleaned in the holidays so no lunches are lost.

Questions to ask before booking

  • Whether a survey comes first
  • When they can work, and whether that’s outside your opening hours
  • Exactly which parts of the system are covered
  • If the quote is a fixed price or an estimate

Ductwork cleaning in Breeds: the local picture

The Food Standards Agency lists about 6 pubs and bars as registered food businesses across Breeds and its immediate surroundings (about a mile and a half). Wherever they cook, the canopy, duct and fan collect grease just as a restaurant’s do. Breeds is covered by Essex County Fire and Rescue Service. Its fire safety officers can audit commercial kitchens, and grease in the extract is part of a kitchen’s fire risk. Environmental health officers from Chelmsford council inspect food businesses in Breeds. Extraction counts as kitchen equipment, so its condition can come up on the day. Before-and-after photos from each clean are a simple way to show the extract is in hand.

Kitchens that cook twelve hours or more a day, as some healthcare kitchens do, fall into BESA’s three-monthly minimum; Broomfield Hospital is the nearest hospital to Breeds, about 1.2 miles south-east. Where a hall near Church of SS Mary and Laurence, or anywhere in Breeds, hosts lunch clubs or events, its extract gathers grease just as a café’s does.

Landlords, agents and facilities managers

Running several sites is easier with one contractor. We work across London and the South East, so a run of sites can go into one programme and kept to a regular schedule.

Under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, the responsible person must assess and reduce fire risk, which may be the employer, owner, landlord, FM or managing agent. With shared responsibility, good records help everyone.

Honest limits

A few issues sit outside what this work can do:

  • An extract fan that has stopped working
  • Faulty fire dampers
  • Ductwork that is corroded, split or holed (that needs a ductwork contractor)

Not sure which it is? You can give us a ring on 0345 646 2711 or send us an email and we’ll tell you honestly.

What we work on in Breeds

  • Horizontal duct runs
  • Attenuators
  • Vertical risers
  • Access panels
  • Bends and junctions
  • Multi-storey ducts

Staff cleaning versus specialist work

For ventilation and air handling systems, in-house care is mostly about checks: clear grilles, a log of filter changes and reporting anything odd. Cleaning inside ducts and units is specialist work.

Keep a record of what your team does. A dated log of in-house cleaning and checks shows an inspector that the system is looked after between visits, next to our reports.
