Landlords, agents and facilities managers

The Fire Safety Order 2005 puts the duty to manage fire risk on the responsible person, which may be the employer, owner, landlord, FM or managing agent. Where responsibility is shared, records matter even more.

We regularly work with managing agents. Tell us the site, the work and the access arrangements and we’ll come back with a fixed quote.

How we handle canopy cleaning in Wyddial

We have been cleaning kitchen canopies since we started trading in 2009. As a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, we treat the canopy as one part of a whole system, and we are fully insured, with CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001. Typical jobs include a sticky, discoloured canopy and fat running down the front of the hood, across canopy light fittings, grease gutters and wall canopies.

For a kitchen in or near Wyddial, the visit is planned around opening hours and the journey, and the clean itself is the same full TR19® job as in any town: canopy, filters, duct, fan and discharge, with a certificate and photo report at the end.

We’re CHAS and SafeContractor accredited, we hold ISO 9001 and we are fully insured. We are also a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, trading since 2009.

What the work involves, part by part

Wall canopies

Long wall canopies often have several filter banks. We work along the canopy section by section, with pictures for each.

School and staff canteen kitchens

In a school or workplace canteen, the canopy is often the only part of the extract staff ever see. The canopy and plenum are both cleaned, so what’s out of sight is dealt with too.

Common problems we fix in Wyddial

The canopy takes the hottest, wettest air in the kitchen. Grease from the vapour lands on the canopy’s inner surfaces, its joints and its filters before what gets through reaches the plenum.

Common reasons sites call us are:

  • Overflowing grease troughs and gutters
  • Greasy streaks across the canopy
  • Filters that clog soon after cleaning
  • Grease dripping from the canopy edge

Bursars and site managers at schools such as Layston Church of England First School tend to book extract cleaning for when the kitchen is empty.

Questions to ask before you book

What canopy cleaning looks like in Wyddial

Food Standards Agency records include about 6 pubs and bars in and around Wyddial, up to about a mile and a half out. Wherever they cook, the canopy, duct and fan collect grease just as a restaurant’s do. Wyddial is covered by Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Service. Its fire safety officers can audit commercial kitchens, and grease in the extract is part of a kitchen’s fire risk. Environmental health officers from East Hertfordshire council inspect food businesses in Wyddial. The cleanliness of the kitchen and its equipment, extraction included, is part of what they check. Our report lists what was cleaned and when, which is useful to have ready.

Where a hall near Church of St Giles, or anywhere in Wyddial, hosts lunch clubs or events, its extract gathers grease just as a café’s does.

Staff cleaning versus specialist work

Keep a record of what your team does. A simple log of filter washes, wipe-downs and checks shows an inspector that the system is looked after between visits, next to our reports.

When your team notices a problem between visits, such as dripping grease, a noisy fan, a smell or a filter that won’t come clean, they should report it rather than try to fix it. We can diagnose it and quote.

Your questions about canopy cleaning in Wyddial

Which fire service covers Wyddial?

It’s Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Service, which covers Wyddial. It’s worth keeping your fire risk assessment, TR19® certificates and photo reports together, ready to show.

Do you work at weekends in Wyddial?

Yes, evening, overnight and weekend work is normal for us. That way a site in Wyddial does not have to lose a day’s trading. When you call us on 0345 646 2711 or drop us a line, mention when the site is quiet.

Do you have a 24/7 line?

Yes. Our emergency line runs 24/7 for anything that cannot wait until a planned visit. Ring any time and tell us what’s happened.

Why does grease run off the canopy edge?

Grease that builds up inside the canopy has to go somewhere. Once the troughs and plenum are full, it runs down and drips, often mixed with condensation. Cleaning removes the cause.

Which canopies and hoods do you clean?

We clean canopies in commercial kitchens of every kind. The routine stays the same whatever the kitchen, with the equipment off and cool.

Do you have insurance?

Yes. We carry full insurance, and we’ve been trading since 2009.

Will I get a report after the canopy clean?

A photo report, with before and after pictures of the canopy and plenum. It also gives a recommended date for the next clean.

What if parts of the system cannot be reached?

They’re listed in the report, never skipped quietly. The report says which parts couldn’t be reached and why, along with a quote to put access in.

What canopy cleaning can’t fix

In fairness, some problems need a different fix:

  • Weak extraction caused by a failing fan motor
  • A canopy too small for the cooking under it (that’s a design question)
  • Filters that no longer seal in the housing

Not sure which it is? You can give us a ring on 0345 646 2711 or email us and we’ll tell you honestly before you book.

Where we work

  • Canopy light fittings
  • Wall canopies
  • Grease gutters
  • Plenum chambers
  • Baffle filters
  • Island canopies

How it works

We’re used to working while the site is closed. Evenings, nights and weekends are when much of our work happens, so a kitchen or building can carry on as usual the next day. On site, the work takes a few hours for most canopies. For a village or hamlet like Wyddial, tell us about narrow lanes, gates and parking when you book.

  1. First the canopy is surveyed, by pictures or in person.
  2. Cooking equipment is left to cool and the area under the canopy protected.
  3. With the filters out, the plenum and housing are cleaned back.
  4. We degrease the canopy shell, its seams and the grease troughs.
  5. Filters go back, the area is cleaned down and pictures are taken.

Getting ready for the visit

  • Tell us where we can park and unload
  • Let us know how we reach the system, including roofs, risers and plant rooms
  • Agree a time when the area can be out of use

Ask for a quote

There’s no standard price list, because every site is different. We look at your system first, from photos or on a visit, then send a fixed quote. To start, give us a ring on 0345 646 2711 or email us.

What affects the quote in Wyddial

A fixed price needs a few facts first. We check:

  • How many systems or sites are involved
  • The condition of the system
  • How big the system is
  • Whether it’s a one-off visit or part of a schedule

Every site is different, so we price each one individually. The size of the job, how we reach it, its condition and the working hours all make a difference.

What we need to know

To speed up the quote, please include:

  • The roof, plant room or outside wall the system runs to
  • Anything you’ve noticed, such as smells, noise, drips or poor airflow
  • Any access panels or hatches you can see
  • The paperwork from the last visit, if you have it

Some systems can be priced from photos; others need a survey. Larger sites, and anything hidden behind walls, ceilings or floors, are normally surveyed first. Either way, the quote is fixed before any work is booked.
