How we handle canopy cleaning in West Horndon
We have been cleaning kitchen canopies since we started trading in 2009. As a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, we treat the canopy as one part of a whole system, and we hold CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001. The work covers plenum chambers, baffle filters and wall canopies, and people most often call us about a greasy hood noticed by an inspector and a sticky, discoloured canopy.
Work in a small place like West Horndon starts with a call to agree access and timings, and the clean itself is the same full TR19® job as in any town: canopy to discharge, then a TR19® certificate and a photo report.
The sign-off is always in writing: a dated report with photos of the work, and for TR19® Grease cleans, a certificate issued through the BESCA VHE portal. Any parts we couldn’t reach are recorded on it too.

West Horndon questions
Is West Horndon within the area you cover?
Yes. West Horndon is within the area we cover across London and the South East. Just mention lanes, gates or anything else about the site when you book.
Who carries out food hygiene inspections in West Horndon?
Food hygiene inspections in West Horndon are carried out by Brentwood council. It helps to keep the extract cleaning records with your food safety paperwork, so they’re ready if asked for.
Why does grease run off the canopy edge?
Grease that builds up inside the canopy has to go somewhere. When the gutters fill, it overflows onto the range, often mixed with condensation. A thorough clean stops it.
How much of the canopy do you clean?
We clean the canopy inside and out, along with its seams and grease channels. With the filters out, the plenum and housing are cleaned as well.
What do you do to protect the area?
With sheeting and covers, before anything else happens. The work is kept contained and clean down when we finish.
Is TR19 cleaning required by law?
Not in itself. TR19® is the benchmark insurers, fire officers and EHOs check against, and many insurers ask for proof of cleaning to it. The legal duty sits in the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 in England and Wales.
Do you look at the system first?
Yes, every time. Diagnosis comes before treatment: the survey shows what needs doing and what access we need, and the quote is based on that.
Are you fully insured?
Yes, fully. We also hold CHAS and SafeContractor, for sites that check contractor safety.
What canopy cleaning cannot fix
A few issues sit outside what this work can do:
- Grease in the duct runs and risers behind the canopy
- A canopy too small for the cooking under it (that’s a design question)
- Grease filters too damaged to refit (they need replacing)
If in doubt, call us on 0345 646 2711, or email photos and we will say what we think.
Parts of the system we cover

Kitchen extracts in West Horndon
The FSA’s data shows about 3 bars, pubs and nightclubs registered within 1.5 miles or so of the middle of West Horndon. Where they serve hot food, their kitchen extracts need cleaning to TR19® like any restaurant’s. Kitchens in West Horndon get their food hygiene inspections from Brentwood council. They look at how clean the premises and equipment are, and the kitchen extract is part of that. Before-and-after pictures from each clean are a simple way to show the extract is in hand. West Horndon is covered by Essex County Fire and Rescue Service. The Fire Safety Order puts the duty on whoever runs a kitchen to control its fire risk, and a greasy duct is fuel.
A hospital like Spire Hartswood Hospital, about 3 miles north-west, is the kind of site where a kitchen may cook for patients, staff and visitors all day. If you cook for passing trade around West Horndon station, the extract can be cleaned between your last and first customer. Where a hall near St Francis, or anywhere in West Horndon, hosts lunch clubs or events, its extract gathers grease just as a café’s does.

What affects the cost of canopy cleaning
Your quote is based on your site. We take into account:
- What state the system is in
- Site requirements such as sign-in and permits
- How many systems or sites are involved
- Travel, parking and unloading
We don’t list prices on the website, because the cost depends on the site in front of us. For a fixed quote, call 0345 646 2711 or use the quote form, and we will talk you through it.
What we need to know
There’s no need for technical detail. Just send:
- Where the plant sits or the system leaves the building, such as a roof or outside wall
- Close-ups of filters, grilles, hatches or access panels
- Where the site is and what kind of site it is
- The times we could work without disrupting the site
Want a quote for canopy cleaning? Please call us on 0345 646 2711 or drop us a line with a few details about the site. We will talk you through the work and send you a fixed quote before anything is booked.
What we do, step by step
Your trading hours come first. We book the visit for a time the area is closed, whether that is an evening, overnight or a weekend. When the team arrives, the work area is protected and the relevant equipment is switched off to cool, and the work takes part of a shift for most kitchens, more where there are several canopies or heavy deposits. If the van will struggle with a lane or gateway near West Horndon, let us know and we will plan around it.
- The canopy is checked from pictures or on a visit.
- Once the kitchen has closed, the cooking line is cooled and sheeted.
- We lift out the filters and scrape the plenum and housing.
- Inside and out, the hood and its troughs are cleaned.
- Filters are refitted, the area cleaned down and the photo report put together.
Before we arrive
- Tell us where we can park and unload
- Agree a time when the area can be out of use
- Have your last certificate or report to hand
Get a fixed quote
Photos are enough for some jobs, while others need a look on site. Larger sites, and anything hidden behind walls, ceilings or floors, are normally surveyed first. Either way, the quote is fixed before any work is booked.
Related advice
Between visits
Results last longer with the right care. We suggest:
- Keep filters on a set cleaning routine
- Make sure filters sit tight in the housing
- Keep grease cups and drawers emptied
- Avoid harsh scourers that scratch the canopy
We clear away the sheeting, waste grease and water before we leave. Filters are back in place and seated properly ready for the next service.
Do not let canopy gutters fill to the brim. Most canopy drips start with a full trough, so make emptying them part of the closing routine.
In-house cleaning or a specialist?
A few tasks are always specialist work: opening up ductwork, cleaning fans, drop testing fire dampers and measuring grease need training, the right equipment and safe access. That’s our job.
Day-to-day cleaning is something your team can do: wiping canopies, washing grease filters and recording it in a log. Inside the ducts, risers and fan is specialist work, and that’s where we come in.
For landlords and multi-site operators
When the building owner and the occupier are different, the lease normally sets out who maintains what. We can quote either party, and the report can go to both.
Whether it’s one building or many, you get the same standard: a survey first, a fixed quote, the work timed around the site and a report with pictures.
What the work involves, part by part
Plenums and filter housings
Behind neglected filters, the plenum can be heavily coated. Heavy deposits are scraped out by hand before degreasing.
Wall canopies
The back of a wall canopy is hard to reach and easy to miss. We remove the filters to reach it and scrape it clean.
