Canopy cleaning in West End, done properly
We’ve been cleaning kitchen canopies since we started trading in 2009. As a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, we treat the canopy as one part of a whole system, and we hold CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001. The work covers plenum chambers, grease gutters and wall canopies, and the jobs we see most are overflowing grease troughs and gutters and condensation running down the canopy.
Somewhere as small as West End, commercial kitchens are few: perhaps a pub, a school or care home kitchen, or a hall used for events. Every one of them still needs its extract kept clear of grease, whatever the size of the place.
Good records are part of the job. You get a written report with pictures after each visit, listing what was done, anything we couldn’t reach and when the next visit is due. Keep it with your fire safety records so it’s to hand when an insurer or inspector asks.

What staff can safely do
Good housekeeping makes our visits easier, not unnecessary. Regular in-house cleaning slows the build-up, but hidden parts of the system still need specialist attention.
Keep a record of what your team does. A dated log of in-house cleaning and checks shows an inspector that the system is looked after between visits, next to our reports.

What else we do in West End
What the work involves, part by part
School and staff canteen kitchens
In a school or workplace canteen, the canopy is often the only part of the extract staff ever see. The canopy and plenum are both cleaned, so what’s out of sight is dealt with too.
Pub and hotel kitchens
In a pub or hotel, the canopy is often in view of staff all day, so drips and smells soon become a daily nuisance. Cleaning the canopy and plenum sorts it.
FAQs for West End
Can you clean school kitchen extracts in West End during the holidays?
Yes, out-of-term visits are normal for schools. Food Standards Agency records list about 5 schools, colleges and universities with registered kitchens within about a mile and a half of West End. Just call us on 0345 646 2711 or send us an email with your term dates and we will plan around them.
Which fire service covers West End?
It’s Surrey Fire and Rescue Service, which covers West End. Records of extract cleaning are a sensible thing to have ready if a fire safety officer carries out an audit.
Can you look after several sites?
Yes. You deal with one contact for every site in our area, and visits can be set on a regular cycle.
Which canopies and hoods do you clean?
Single hoods, long wall canopies and island canopies alike. We work out the approach when we survey, from pictures or a visit.
What does TR19 mean?
It’s the industry benchmark for cleaning ventilation and kitchen extract systems, written by BESA. It sets out inspection, cleaning and record keeping, and it takes a risk-based approach.
Do you survey before quoting?
Yes. Photos often do the job, while bigger or harder-to-see systems are surveyed on site.
Can I just have the canopy cleaned instead of the whole system?
A TR19® Grease clean covers the whole system, not just the canopy. A canopy clean helps between full cleans, but the ducts and fan still need doing, and the report will say what was covered.
What paperwork do I get after a canopy clean?
Every clean comes with a photo report, listing what was cleaned. Where the whole system is cleaned, you also get a TR19 certificate through the BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite portal.
How the visit works
Your trading hours come first. Most visits are booked for when the area is out of use, such as evenings, overnight, early mornings or weekends. Once we’re in, the area is sheeted and anything that has to be off is turned off and cooled, and the job takes an hour or two for one small canopy, longer where there are several. Pictures of the system and its access let us plan the work in West End before we set off.
- First the canopy is surveyed, by photos or in person.
- Equipment below is switched off and left to cool, then sheeted.
- Filters come out and the plenum behind them is scraped and degreased.
- The canopy is cleaned inside and out, including troughs and seams.
- We refit the filters, clear up and photograph the finished canopy.
Preparing for the visit
- Let us know how we reach the system, including roofs, risers and plant rooms
- Tell us where we can park and unload
- Clear the space around the work

What affects the quote in West End
You’ll get a fixed price before we start. It’s based on:
- The scale of the work
- Site rules, permits and inductions
- Travel, parking and unloading
- One-off work versus a regular cycle
A single site or a whole portfolio, the quote is built the same way: what needs doing, how we get to it and when. You will have a fixed price before work begins.
What to send for a quote
When you call or email, it’s useful to have:
- Anything you’ve noticed, such as smells, noise, drips or poor airflow
- Close-ups of filters, grilles, hatches or access panels
- When the site is open and when it’s quiet
- Your last certificate, test record or report
Want a quote for canopy cleaning? Please call us on 0345 646 2711 or drop us a line with a few details about the site. We will explain what we’d do and send a fixed quote before you commit to anything.
Why act early in West End
Grease on the canopy is sitting just above the heat source. A flare-up can catch it and be drawn into the plenum and duct, where a fire is much harder to stop. A clean canopy takes that fuel away. Equipment tucked in a roof space or outbuilding near West End rarely gets looked at unless someone books it.
Working hours, access and the scale of the site can all change the price. Each of those is built into the quote, and the price is fixed before work begins.

Canopy cleaning in West End: the local picture
The FSA’s food hygiene register shows about 44 cafés, restaurants and staff canteens and about 9 sandwich bars and takeaways within about 1.5 miles of central West End. Where they cook under a hood, the plenum behind the filters is where grease hides. Surrey Fire and Rescue Service covers West End. Its fire safety officers can audit commercial kitchens, and grease in the extract is part of a kitchen’s fire risk. Kitchens in West End get their food hygiene inspections from Elmbridge council. An officer looking round a kitchen will see the canopy, and grease there is hard to miss. Keeping each certificate and photo report on file helps show the extract is looked after.
Healthcare kitchens cannot easily close, so their extracts are cleaned overnight or between meal services; the nearest hospital to West End is No. 2 New Zealand General Hospital, about 2.6 miles north-west. If you run a church or community hall kitchen, near St George's or elsewhere in West End, its extract still collects grease from every lunch and event.

Local landmarks in West End
Typical jobs here are in premises near Esher Church School, Claremont Park and Esher Church of England High School and the streets around them. The nearest railway station is Hersham station, roughly 1.1 miles north-west of the centre. Nearby you will also find Elmbridge Museum (0.9 miles north-east) and No. 2 New Zealand General Hospital (2.6 miles north-west). Green spaces nearby include Claremont Lake and Jubilee Wood.
When to call us in West End
A canopy in West End picks up grease at much the same rate as one anywhere else with the same cooking: it comes down to how long the kitchen cooks and what’s on the menu. Frying and grilling load a canopy far faster than steaming or boiling.
Look out for these warning signs:
- Poor capture at the hood
- Grease dripping from the canopy edge
- Condensation running down the canopy
- Canopy gutters full of old fat
Older buildings often hide long, awkward duct runs, and if you run a kitchen at a historic venue in the area (The Homewood is about 1 mile south-west), access may need planning.
