What happens if it’s left?

Leaving the canopy until the next full clean can mean months of build-up. In a busy kitchen, the canopy and plenum can need attention between TR19 cleans, and readings or a look behind the filters will show it. Even a site near Watford Heath that’s only busy part of the week needs its system checked on a schedule.

Kitchens, offices, schools and hospitals are all priced the same way: the size of the job, access, condition and working hours. Ask for a fixed quote and we will go through it with you.

How we handle canopy cleaning in Watford Heath

Duct Doctor has cleaned canopies and hoods since 2009. We are a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, and we hold CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001. The work covers island canopies, wall canopies and plenum chambers, and people most often call us about a filter housing caked in grease and drips from the canopy onto the range.

Kitchens around a place like Watford Heath are often in older buildings or single-storey extensions, where the duct may cross a roof void or climb an outside wall. Flat runs collect grease and need proper access to clean.

Accreditations are easy to claim and worth checking. We are a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, and we hold CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001, with full insurance on top.

The process

We work around your opening hours, not the other way round. We book the visit for a time the area is closed, whether that’s an evening, overnight or a weekend. Once we’re in, the area is sheeted and anything that has to be off is turned off and cooled, and the job takes an hour or two for one small canopy, longer where there are several. Everything the job in Watford Heath needs is worked out beforehand, from the survey.

  1. We look at the canopy, filters and troughs first.
  2. Once the kitchen has closed, the cooking line is cooled and sheeted.
  3. With the filters removed, the plenum and filter channels are cleaned.
  4. Inside and out, the hood and its troughs are cleaned.
  5. We put the filters back, tidy up and photograph the finished canopy.

Before we arrive

  • Tell us about access, such as roof hatches, plant rooms, ceilings or locked areas
  • Arrange a key holder or contact on site
  • Mention any parking or loading restrictions

What canopy cleaning looks like in Watford Heath

The FSA’s food hygiene register includes about 24 bars, pubs and nightclubs across Watford Heath and its immediate surroundings (about a mile and a half). Where they serve hot food, their kitchen extracts need cleaning to TR19® like any restaurant’s. Food hygiene inspections in Watford Heath are the job of Watford council’s environmental health team. They look at how clean the premises and equipment are, and the kitchen extract is part of that. Before-and-after pictures from each clean are a simple way to show the extract is in hand. The fire and rescue service for Watford Heath is Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Service. Grease in a kitchen extract is a recognised fire risk, and the fire authority enforces the law on managing it in most commercial premises.

Church and community hall kitchens, near Church of St Matthew or anywhere around Watford Heath, are easy to forget, but their extracts collect grease like any other. School kitchens, at schools like Bromet Primary School for example, are normally cleaned in the holidays so no lunches are lost. If you cook for passing trade around Bushey station, the extract can be cleaned between your last and first customer.

How we price canopy cleaning

Before we fix a price, we need to know a few things. We look at:

  • The times the site is available
  • The condition of the system
  • Whether we need access equipment or extra panels
  • Any permits to work or inductions

Putting the work off seldom saves money. Build-up, wear and faults tend to get worse, not better, and a neglected system can mean more work. If you’re unsure, give us a ring on 0345 646 2711, or send details by email for straight advice and a fixed quote.

What we need to know

A few details help us quote accurately. With your enquiry, please include:

  • Any access panels or hatches you can see
  • Anything you’ve noticed, such as smells, noise, drips or poor airflow
  • The paperwork from the last visit, if you have it
  • The postcode and the type of business

Photos are enough for some jobs, while others need a look on site. Larger sites, and anything hidden behind walls, ceilings or floors, are normally surveyed first. Either way, the quote is fixed before any work is booked.

Looking after it afterwards

How long the results last depends on use and care. Here’s what we suggest:

  • Keep every filter in place while cooking
  • Clean the baffle filters often
  • Wipe the canopy down at close every day
  • Run the extract the whole time you are cooking

Anything worth knowing goes into the report: bent or poorly fitting filters, a light cover that is cracked, or troughs that fill too quickly. It’s a short list of what to watch, not a sales pitch.

Run the extract for as long as anything is cooking. Air that keeps moving carries less grease onto the canopy.

Watford Heath: your questions answered

Who carries out food hygiene inspections in Watford Heath?

The local authority for Watford Heath is Watford council, and its environmental health team does the inspecting. Have your latest TR19® certificate and photo report to hand, as an officer may ask how the extract is maintained.

Do you cover smaller places like Watford Heath?

Yes, smaller places are covered as well as towns. Just mention lanes, gates or anything else about the site when you book.

What types of premises do you cover?

All kinds of commercial and public premises: from restaurants, pubs and hotels to schools, hospitals, care homes, offices, shops and food production sites. We fit the work around how the site operates.

Which accreditations do you hold?

BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite membership, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, plus CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001. We’re fully insured and have been trading since 2009.

What does canopy cleaning cost?

We don’t publish prices, because the cost depends on the job: how big it is, what state it’s in, how we reach it and the working hours. You get a fixed price before work begins.

What should I send you?

Only a few details: the address, the site type, your opening hours and how we reach the system. Photos and the last report help too. Then call us on 0345 646 2711 or drop us a line.

What is TR19?

A BESA specification in two main parts: TR19® Grease for kitchen extract systems and TR19® Air for general ventilation. It is not legislation, but it’s the standard people check against.

Will I get a report after the canopy clean?

A photo report shows the canopy and plenum before and after. If the canopy is cleaned as part of a full TR19 clean, a TR19 certificate is issued too.

Part by part

Pub and hotel kitchens

A hotel or pub kitchen can rarely close for long. Canopy cleans are done late at night or early in the morning so the kitchen keeps trading.

Plenums and filter housings

A plenum that hasn’t been cleaned for a long time can hold a thick layer of grease. We remove thick grease by hand, then degrease.

In-house cleaning or a specialist?

In-house cleaning and specialist cleaning do different jobs. A daily filter wipe and a weekly filter wash keep grease down at the front of the system, but grease that has passed the filters is out of reach. Reaching it takes a specialist with the right equipment.

For ventilation and air handling systems, in-house care is mostly about checks: clear grilles, a log of filter changes and reporting anything odd. The inside of ducts and units needs a specialist.

Honest limits

We’ll always give you a straight diagnosis, so here’s what canopy cleaning won’t do:

  • A canopy undersized for the equipment
  • Grease filters too damaged to refit (they need replacing)
  • Ductwork and fans beyond the canopy (those need a full TR19 clean)

Not sure which it is? You can give us a ring on 0345 646 2711 or use the quote form and we’ll tell you honestly before booking.
