How we handle canopy cleaning in Virginia Water

We’ve been cleaning kitchen canopies since we started trading in 2009. As a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, we treat the canopy as one part of a whole system, and we hold CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001. The work covers plenum chambers, grease gutters and baffle filters, and the jobs we see most are overflowing grease troughs and gutters and fat running down the front of the hood.

In a smaller place like Virginia Water, the kitchens with extract systems are more likely to be a pub, a café, a takeaway or a school or care home kitchen than a big restaurant. Quieter kitchens still collect grease in the duct, just more slowly, so the interval is set by hours of use and grease readings.

Good records are part of the job. Each visit is written up with photos, listing what was done, anything we couldn’t reach and when the next visit is due. File it in your maintenance log so it’s ready for an insurer, fire officer or EHO.

How the visit works

Protection comes first: sheeting goes over floors and surfaces close to the work. Then we make the system safe and start. It takes an hour or two for one small canopy, longer where there are several, and we clear up before we go. Getting to the system matters more than parking in a place like Virginia Water, so let us know how to reach it.

  1. We look at the canopy first, from pictures or on a visit.
  2. Cooking equipment is left to cool and the area under the canopy protected.
  3. With the filters out, the plenum and housing are cleaned back.
  4. The canopy is cleaned inside and out, including troughs and seams.
  5. Clean filters are refitted and before and after pictures go into your report.

How to prepare

  • Name a contact who can let us in at the agreed time
  • Clear the space around the work
  • Mention any locked doors, roof access or ceiling voids

How to get a quote

Some systems can be priced from pictures; others need a survey. Big or complicated sites, and systems that are hard to see in photos, get a survey first. Either way, you get a fixed price before work begins.

Fixed quotes for canopy cleaning in Virginia Water

There’s no set price list, because sites vary so much. The quote depends on:

  • The number of sites or systems
  • Whether we need access equipment or extra panels
  • Where the site is and how we reach it
  • The condition we find in the survey

Several systems or sites on one quote can make for a more efficient booking. Tell us about everything you’d like looked at and we will price it together.

Helping us quote

What to send for a quote:

  • The postcode and the type of business
  • Any symptoms, from odd noises to smells or leaks
  • Your last certificate, test record or report
  • The roof, plant room or outside wall the system runs to

Getting a quote does not take long. Send a few details and photos, and we usually reply with a fixed quote within one working day. If we need to see the system first, we book a survey around your hours.

What the work involves, part by part

School and staff canteen kitchens

In a school or workplace canteen, the canopy is often the only part of the extract staff ever see. The canopy and plenum are both cleaned, so what’s out of sight is dealt with too.

Island canopies

An island canopy is open on all sides, which means grease settles on all four sides. We clean all of them, inside and out.

Between visits

So the system stays in good health:

  • Flag any change in how the canopy behaves
  • Keep the fan on through service
  • Do not scrape the canopy with metal tools
  • Check and empty canopy gutters regularly

After the clean you get a photo report showing the canopy, plenum and housing before and after. The report lists what was cleaned and any part we couldn’t get to, so the record is honest and complete.

A change in how the canopy behaves is worth reporting. More drips or quicker clogging often mean the cleaning interval needs looking at, which a grease thickness test can confirm.

Do you need canopy cleaning in Virginia Water?

Moisture in the air mixes with the grease on the canopy. As the canopy cools, condensation forms, carrying grease with it. Drips onto the cooking line are a common result.

The symptoms we are asked about most include:

  • A sticky, discoloured canopy
  • Grease filters blocking between washes
  • Grease dripping from the canopy edge
  • Overflowing grease troughs and gutters

Commuter trade near Virginia Water station can mean long cooking hours, and long hours put a kitchen into BESA’s more frequent cleaning bands.

Before you book anyone

  • What hours they’ll be on site
  • How they set the interval to the next visit
  • What insurance they carry

Virginia Water kitchens: local notes

Food Standards Agency records include about 6 pubs, bars and clubs in and around Virginia Water, up to about a mile and a half out. Any of them serving cooked food has an extract to keep clean, from canopy to discharge. In Virginia Water, food businesses are inspected by environmental health officers from Runnymede council. An officer looking round a kitchen will see the canopy, and grease there is hard to miss. A dated certificate in the maintenance file answers the question before it’s asked. Virginia Water sits within the area of Surrey Fire and Rescue Service. Its fire safety officers can audit commercial kitchens, and grease in the extract is part of a kitchen’s fire risk.

Volunteers running a hall kitchen near Christ Church, or anywhere in Virginia Water, may not know when the extract was last cleaned, and a grease test settles it. Healthcare kitchens, like those at hospitals such as St. Peter's Hospital (about 2.5 miles south-east), often cook for long hours, which puts them in BESA’s heavier-use bands.

Questions from Virginia Water

Which fire and rescue service is responsible for Virginia Water?

Virginia Water is in the area of Surrey Fire and Rescue Service. It’s worth keeping your fire risk assessment, TR19® certificates and photo reports together, ready to show.

Will you come out to Virginia Water?

Yes. Virginia Water is within the area we cover across London and the South East. Just mention lanes, gates or anything else about the site when you book.

Does the law say we must follow TR19?

No, not in itself. TR19® is the benchmark insurers, fire officers and EHOs check against, and many insurance policies ask for proof of TR19® cleaning. The law behind it is the Fire Safety Order 2005, which applies in England and Wales.

What should I send you?

Only a few details: where it is, what kind of site, when it’s open and the access. Photos and the last report help too. After that, simply give us a ring on 0345 646 2711 or drop us a line.

What paperwork do I get after a canopy clean?

Before and after pictures go into a report that lists what was cleaned and anything we couldn’t reach. Where the whole system is cleaned, you also get a TR19 certificate through the BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite portal.

What happens to the waste?

Waste is contained during the work and removed when we leave, from grease and debris to used cleaning water. We don’t leave it behind.

What accreditations do you have?

CHAS, SafeContractor, ISO 9001 and BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite membership, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease. We are fully insured and have been trading since 2009.

How long does canopy cleaning take?

A single canopy with a light build-up is fairly quick, but large or heavily soiled canopies take longer. We’ll tell you what to expect.

Multi-site and managed buildings

For anyone managing more than one site, we can schedule visits across all of them on one quote. Every building has its own written report, so records stay tidy.

Multi-site operators often want one contractor and one number. We work across London and the South East, so a run of sites can go into one programme and kept to a regular schedule.

Honest limits

We will not sell you work that does not address the problem, so here are the limits:

  • A canopy undersized for the equipment
  • Filters that no longer seal in the housing
  • Weak extraction caused by a failing fan motor

Not sure which it is? You can call 0345 646 2711 or email us and we’ll tell you honestly.
