Canopy cleaning for kitchens and businesses in Three Oaks

We’ve been cleaning kitchen canopies since we started trading in 2009. We’re a BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite member, cleaning to BESA TR19® Grease, and we hold CHAS, SafeContractor and ISO 9001. The work covers plenum chambers, island canopies and wall canopies, and the jobs we see most are an EHO comment about the canopy and overflowing grease troughs and gutters.

Work in a small place like Three Oaks starts with a call to agree access and timings, and the clean itself is the same full TR19® job as in any town: canopy, filters, duct, fan and discharge, with a certificate and photo report at the end.

Every visit ends with a written report and photos, so there’s a dated record of the work. Where the work is a TR19® Grease clean, the certificate is issued through the BESCA Vent Hygiene Elite portal.

Managing agents and facilities teams in Three Oaks

Running several sites is easier with one contractor. We cover South East England and London, so a run of sites can go into one programme and kept on a regular cycle.

We regularly work with managing agents. Tell us the site, the work and the access arrangements and we’ll come back with a fixed quote.

Keeping the system healthy

Think of this as the after-treatment advice, in brief:

  • Use non-abrasive cloths on the hood
  • Tell us when the canopy starts to drip
  • Clean the baffle filters often
  • Check all filters are fitted before service

A before and after photo report follows the clean. The report lists what was cleaned and any part we couldn’t get to, so the record is honest and complete.

Don’t let canopy gutters fill to the brim. Most canopy drips start with a full trough, so make emptying them part of the closing routine.

Questions from Three Oaks

Will you come out to Three Oaks?

Yes, we work in villages as well as towns, and Three Oaks is covered. Just mention lanes, gates or anything else about the site when you book.

Can you clean school kitchen extracts in Three Oaks during the holidays?

Yes, and it’s the easiest time to do it. Around Three Oaks, the Food Standards Agency lists about 2 schools and colleges with registered kitchens within a mile and a half or so. Booking early in the term gives the best choice of holiday dates.

How long is a canopy clean?

A single canopy with a light build-up is fairly quick, but large or heavily soiled canopies take longer. We will tell you what to expect.

What happens to the waste?

We take it away at the end of the visit. During the work, it’s contained so the area stays clean.

What happens if you can’t reach some of it?

We record them on the report, with photos where possible, and we tell you what would make it reachable, for example new access panels.

What happens to the filters during the clean?

We remove the filters to reach the plenum, then clean and refit them. Any that are damaged are noted on the report.

What’s TR19?

A BESA specification in two main parts: TR19® Grease for kitchen extract systems and TR19® Air for general ventilation. It isn’t legislation, but it’s the standard people check against.

Is TR19 cleaning required by law?

No. The law sets the duty; TR19® is the benchmark used to show it’s met. Under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, the responsible person has to manage fire risk, and many insurers can refuse or reduce a claim without proof of cleaning.

Part by part

Pub and hotel kitchens

Pub and hotel kitchens can cook from breakfast to late evening. That is a lot of grease on the canopy, so it may need cleaning between full TR19 cleans.

Plenums and filter housings

A plenum that hasn’t been cleaned for a long time can hold a thick layer of grease. We remove thick grease by hand, then degrease.

How it works

The first job on site is protection: sheeting goes over floors and surfaces close to the work. After that, the system is made safe and the work begins. The work on site takes part of a shift for most kitchens, more where there are several canopies or heavy deposits, and we clear up before we go. If you can send pictures, we can arrive in Three Oaks knowing what to expect.

  1. First the canopy is surveyed, by photos or in person.
  2. Equipment below is switched off and left to cool, then sheeted.
  3. Filters come out and the plenum behind them is scraped and degreased.
  4. The canopy is cleaned inside and out, including troughs and seams.
  5. We refit the filters, clear up and photograph the finished canopy.

Before we arrive

  • Allow time for equipment near the work to be turned off and cool down
  • Move anything stored near the system
  • Have your last certificate or report to hand

Advice

Honest limits

We won’t sell you work that doesn’t address the problem, so here are the limits:

  • Grease in the duct runs and risers behind the canopy
  • Filters that no longer seal in the housing
  • Electrical faults in the canopy

If you’re not sure, just call us on 0345 646 2711 or use the quote form and we will give you a straight answer.

Parts of the system we cover

  • Canopy light fittings
  • Wall canopies
  • Grease gutters
  • Plenum chambers
  • Island canopies
  • Baffle filters

Staff cleaning versus specialist work

Staff cleaning and specialist work aren’t the same thing. A daily filter wipe and a weekly filter wash keep grease down at the front of the system, but grease that has passed the filters is out of reach. That part needs specialist access and equipment.

Away from the kitchen, the in-house job is mainly checking: clear grilles, a log of filter changes and reporting anything odd. The inside of ducts and units needs a specialist.

Why it’s worth doing now in Three Oaks

A blocked plenum and clogged filters cut the airflow at the canopy. The kitchen gets hotter and smokier while the fan strains. A clean canopy and plenum let the extract do its job. A fault that closes a site in a village like Three Oaks affects everyone who depends on it.

Every site is different, so each one gets its own fixed quote. Size, access, the condition of the system and when we can work all play a part.

Any of those kitchens with a canopy has a hood that needs cleaning inside and out. The fire and rescue service for Three Oaks is East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service. The Fire Safety Order puts the duty on whoever runs a kitchen to control its fire risk, and a greasy duct is fuel.

If you run catering at a healthcare site, such as a hospital like Conquest Hospital about 2.5 miles south-west, the extract may need cleaning more often than a part-time kitchen. If you run a church or community hall kitchen, near St Laurence's Church or elsewhere in Three Oaks, its extract still collects grease from every lunch and event. A kitchen near Three Oaks station that serves breakfast and dinner can run its extract twelve hours or more, which shortens the cleaning interval.
